  • Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is a phenomenon in which a protective coating on a metal surface is dissolved by a flow of fluid in a metal pipe, leading to continuous wall-thinning. Recently, many countries have developed computer codes to manage FAC in power plants, and the FAC prediction model in these computer codes plays an important role in predictive performance. Herein, the FAC prediction model was developed by applying a machine learning method and the conventional nonlinear regression method. The random forest, a widely used machine learning technique in predictive modeling led to easy calculation of FAC tendency for five input variables: flow rate, temperature, pH, Cr content, and dissolved oxygen concentration. However, the model showed significant errors in some input conditions, and it was difficult to obtain proper regression results without using additional data points. In contrast, nonlinear regression analysis predicted robust estimation even with relatively insufficient data by assuming an empirical equation and the model showed better predictive power when the interaction between DO and pH was considered. The comparative analysis of this study is believed to provide important insights for developing a more sophisticated FAC prediction model.

  • Background: The COVID-19 pandemic (the form of coronaviruses) developed at the end of 2019 and spread rapidly to almost every corner of the world. It has infected around 25,334,339 of the world population by the end of September 1, 2020 [1] . It has been spreading ever since, and the peak specific to every country has been rising and falling and does not seem to be over yet. Currently, the conventional RT-PCR testing is required to detect COVID-19, but the alternative method for data archiving purposes is certainly another choice for public departments to make. Researchers are trying to use medical images such as X-ray and Computed Tomography (CT) to easily diagnose the virus with the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based software. Method: This review paper provides an investigation of a newly emerging machine-learning method used to detect COVID-19 from X-ray images instead of using other methods of tests performed by medical experts. The facilities of computer vision enable us to develop an automated model that has clinical abilities of early detection of the disease. We have explored the researchers' focus on the modalities, images of datasets for use by the machine learning methods, and output metrics used to test the research in this field. Finally, the paper concludes by referring to the key problems posed by identifying COVID-19 using machine learning and future work studies. Result: This review's findings can be useful for public and private sectors to utilize the X-ray images and deployment of resources before the pandemic can reach its peaks, enabling the healthcare system with cushion time to bear the impact of the unfavorable circumstances of the pandemic is sure to cause

  • This study used the Deep Learning models used in previous studies, we selected the basic model. The selected model was selected as ZFNet among ZFNet, Googlenet and ResNet, and the object was detected using a ZFNet based FRCNN. In order to reduce the detection error rate of FRCNN, location of four types of objects detected inside the image was designed by SVM classifier and location-based filtering was applied. As simulation results, it showed similar performance to the lane marking classification method with conventional 경계 detection, with an average accuracy of about 88.8%. In addition, studies using the Linear-parabolic Model showed a processing speed of 165.65ms with a minimum resolution of 600 × 800, but in this study, the resolution was treated at about 33ms with an input resolution image of 1280 × 960, so it was possible to classify lane marking at a faster rate than the previous study by CNN-based End to End method.

  • Machine and deep learning-based models are emerging techniques that are being used to address prediction problems in biomedical data analysis. DNA sequence prediction is a critical problem that has attracted a great deal of attention in the biomedical domain. Machine and deep learning-based models have been shown to provide more accurate results when compared to conventional regression-based models. The prediction of the gene sequence that leads to cancerous diseases, such as prostate cancer, is crucial. Identifying the most important features in a gene sequence is a challenging task. Extracting the components of the gene sequence that can provide an insight into the types of mutation in the gene is of great importance as it will lead to effective drug design and the promotion of the new concept of personalised medicine. In this work, we extracted the exons in the prostate gene sequences that were used in the experiment. We built a Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Bi-directional Long-Short Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) model using a k-mer encoding for the DNA sequence and one-hot encoding for the class label. The models were evaluated using different classification metrics. Our experimental results show that DNN model prediction offers a training accuracy of 99 percent and validation accuracy of 96 percent. The bi-LSTM model also has a training accuracy of 95 percent and validation accuracy of 91 percent.

  • The proposal of this study is a fast version of the conventional extreme learning machine (ELM), called pseudoinverse matrix decomposition based incremental ELM (PDI-ELM). One of the main problems in ELM is to determine the number of hidden nodes. In this study, the number of hidden nodes is automatically determined. The proposed model is an incremental version of ELM which adds neurons with the goal of minimization the error of the ELM network. To speed up the model the information of pseudoinverse from previous step is taken into account in the current iteration. To show the ability of the PDI-ELM, it is applied to few benchmark classification datasets in the University of California Irvine (UCI) repository. Compared to ELM learner and two other versions of incremental ELM, the proposed PDI-ELM is faster.

  • In this paper, we propose the efficient impulsive noise mitigation scheme for power line communication (PLC) systems in smart grid applications. The proposed scheme estimates the channel impulsive noise information of receiver by applying machine learning. Then, the estimated impulsive noise is updated in data base. In the modulator, the impulsive noise which reduces the PLC performance is effectively mitigated through proposed technique. As an impulsive noise model, Middleton Class A interference model was employed. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER). From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme has better BER performance compared to the conventional model. As a result, the proposed noise mitigation improves the signal quality of PLC systems by effectively removing the channel noise. The results of the paper can be applied to PLC systems for smart grid.

  • With the development of artificial intelligence technology, various methods have been developed for recognizing objects in images using machine learning. Image segmentation is the most effective among these methods for recognizing objects within an image. Conventionally, image datasets of various classes are trained simultaneously. In situations where several classes require segmentation, all datasets have to be trained thoroughly. Such repeated training results in low training efficiency because most of the classes have already been trained. In addition, the number of classes that appear in the datasets affects training. Some classes appear in datasets in remarkably smaller numbers than others, and hence, the training errors will not be properly reflected when all the classes are trained simultaneously. Therefore, a new method that separates some classes from the dataset is proposed to improve efficiency during training. In addition, the accuracies of the conventional and proposed methods are compared.

  • In general, a number of severe accident scenarios derived from Level 2 probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) are typically grouped into several categories to efficiently evaluate their potential impacts on the public with the assumption that scenarios within the same group have similar source term characteristics. To date, however, grouping by similar source terms has been completely reliant on qualitative methods such as logical trees or expert judgements. Recently, an exhaustive simulation approach has been developed to provide quantitative information on the source terms of a large number of severe accident scenarios. With this motivation, this paper proposes a machine learning-based categorization method based on exhaustive simulation for grouping scenarios with similar accident consequences. The proposed method employs clustering with an autoencoder for grouping unlabeled scenarios after dimensionality reductions and feature extractions from the source term data. To validate the suggested method, source term data for 658 severe accident scenarios were used. Results confirmed that the proposed method successfully characterized the severe accident scenarios with similar behavior more precisely than the conventional grouping method.

  • Handling missing values in data analysis is essential in constructing a good prediction model. The easiest way to handle missing values is to use complete case data, but this can lead to information loss within the data and invalid conclusions in data analysis. Imputation is a technique that replaces missing data with alternative values obtained from information in a dataset. Conventional imputation methods include K-nearest-neighbor imputation and multiple imputations. Recent methods include missForest, missRanger, and mixgb ,all which use machine learning algorithms. This paper compares the imputation techniques for datasets with mixed datatypes in various situations, such as data size, missing ratios, and missing mechanisms. To evaluate the performance of each method in mixed datasets, we propose a new imputation performance measure (IPM) that is a unified measurement applicable to numerical and categorical variables. We believe this metric can help find the best imputation method. Finally, we summarize the comparison results with imputation performances and computational times.
