  • From the 90's, the image information retrieval methods have been on progress. As good examples of the methods, Conventional histogram method and merged-color histogram method were introduced. They could get good result in image retrieval. However, Conventional histogram method has disadvantages if the histogram is shifted as a result of intensity change. Merged-color histogram, also, causes more process so, it needs more time to retrieve images. In this paper, we propose an improved new method using Adaptive Color Histogram Bin Matching(AHB) in image retrieval. The proposed method has been tested and verified through a number of simulations using hundreds of images in a database. The simulation results have Quickly yielded the highly accurate candidate images in comparison to other retrieval methods. We show that AHB's can give superior results to color histograms for image retrieval.

  • Various interpolations for digital imaging devices with a single image sensor have proposed. However, conventional methods did not consider the resolution modus of image sensor using periodic sampling. Therefore, the resulting images have problems such as quality degradation and color artifacts(color moire, zipper). In this paper, we propose a color interpolation algorithm for pixel resolution modus of image sensor. The proposed algorithm consisted of an initial step to compensate edge prediction effectively and refinement step using minimum directions for pixel resolution modus. To analyze a result of the proposed algorithm with conventional methods, we evaluated subjectively using images quality comparison and objectively using PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio). Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm was more successful in eliminating the color artifacts than conventional methods judged by both objective and subjective criteria.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the optical properties of pre-colored dental monolithic zirconia ceramics of various thicknesses sintered in a microwave and those in a conventional furnace. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A2-shade of pre-colored monolithic zirconia ceramic specimens ($22.0mm{\times}22.0mm$) in 3 thickness groups of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mm were divided into 2 subgroups according to the sintering methods (n=9): microwave and conventional sintering. A spectrophotometer was used to obtain CIELab color coordinates, and translucency parameters and CIEDE2000 color differences (${\Delta}E_{00}$) were measured. The relative amount of monoclinic phase ($X_m$) was estimated with x-ray diffraction. The surface topography was analyzed by atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope. Statistical analyses were conducted with two-way ANOVA (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. There were small interaction effects on CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, and TP between sintering method and thickness (P<.001): $L^*$ (partial eta squared ${{\eta}_p}^2=0.115$), $a^*$ (${{\eta}_p}^2=0.136$), and TP (${{\eta}_p}^2=0.206$), although higher $b^*$ values were noted for microwave sintering regardless of thickness. Color differences between two sintering methods ranged from 0.52 to 0.96 ${\Delta}E_{00}$ units. The $X_m$ values ranged from 7.03% to 9.89% for conventional sintering, and from 7.31% to 9.17% for microwave sintering. The microwave-sintered specimen demonstrated a smoother surface and a more uniform grain structure compared to the conventionally-sintered specimen. CONCLUSION. With reduced processing time, microwave-sintered pre-colored dental monolithic zirconia ceramics can exhibit similar color perception and translucency to those by conventional sintering.

  • Breads and cookies made with conventional or low-trans fat(margarine and shortening) were analyzed by determining their trans fat content, textural properties and color values after production. The trans fatty acids content in conventional margarine was three times higher than that of low-trans margarine. Moreover, the content of trans fatty acids in the conventional shortening was 49 times higher than that of low-trans shortening. The trans fatty acid contents of cookies and breads made with low-trans fat, can be reduced more than 2 to 75 times compared to cookies and breads made with conventional fat. In the produced cookies and breads, the color values and textural properties(hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness) did not differ significantly when the conventional fat or low-trans fat was used.

  • In this paper, a new type of lip feature is proposed as distance metric in CIELUV color system. The performance of the proposed feature was tested on face image database, Helen dataset from University of Illinois. The test processes consists of three steps. The first step is feature extraction and second step is principal component analysis for the optimal projection of a feature vector. The final step is Otsu's threshold for a two-class problem. The performance of the proposed feature was better than conventional features. Performance metrics for the evaluation are OverLap and Segmentation Error. Best performance for the proposed feature was OverLap of 65% and 59 % of segmentation error. Conventional methods shows 80~95% for OverLap and 5~15% of segmentation error usually. In conventional cases, the face database is well calibrated and adjusted with the same background and illumination for the scene. The Helen dataset used in this paper is not calibrated or adjusted at all. These images are gathered from internet and therefore, there are no calibration and adjustment.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the color stability of provisional restorative materials fabricated by 3D printing, dental milling, and conventional materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For the experimental groups, two commercially available 3D-printing provisional resins (E-Dent 100; EnvisionTEC GmbH, Germany & VeroGlaze™; Stratasys®, USA), two dental milling blocks (PMMA Disk; Yamahachi Dental Co., Japan & Telio®CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Liechtenstein), and two conventional materials (Alike™; GC Co., Japan & Luxatemp automix plus; DMG, Germany) were used. The water sorption and solubility test were (n=10, respectively) carried out according to ISO4049:2000 (International Standards Organization, Geneva, Switzerland). For the color stability test (n=10), coffee and black tea were used as staining solutions, and the specimens were stored for 12 weeks. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD using SPSS version 22.0 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL, USA) (P<.05). RESULTS. Alike and Veroglaze showed the highest values and Luxatemp showed the lowest water sorption. In the color stability test, the ΔE of conventional materials varied depending on the staining solution. PMMA milling blocks showed a relatively low ΔE up to 4 weeks, and then significantly increased after 8 weeks (P<.05). 3D-printed materials exhibited a high ΔE or a significant increase over time (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The degree of discoloration increased with time, and a visually perceptible color difference value (ΔE) was shown regardless of the materials and solutions. PMMA milled and 3D-printed materials showed more rapid change in discoloration after 8 weeks.

  • Color image is largely corrupted by various ambient illumination. However, human perceives always white color as white under any illumination because of a characteristic of human vision, called color constancy. In the conventional algorithm which applied the constancy effect, after the RGB color space is transformed to the IHS(Intensity, Hue, and Saturation) color space, then the hue is preserved and the intensity or the saturation is properly enhanced. Then the enhanced IHS color is reversely transformed to the RGB color space. In this process, the color distortion is included due to the color gamut error. But in the proposed algorithm, there is not transformation. In that, the RGB color is considered as 3 dimensional color vector and we assume that white color is the natural daylight. As the color vector of the illumination can be calculated as the average vector of R, G, and B image, we can achieve the constancy effect by simply rotating the illumination vector to the white color vector. The simulation results show the efficiency of the vector rotating process for color image enhancement.

  • In this paper, we propose a fire detection algorithm based on motion information and color information analysis. Conventional fire detection algorithms have as main problem the difficulty to detect fire due to external light, intensity, background image complexity, and little fire diffusion. So we propose a fire detection algorithm that accurate and fast. First, it analyzes the motion information in video data and then set the first candidate. Second, it determines this domain after analyzing the color and the domain. This algorithm assures a fast fire detection and a high accuracy compared with conventional fire detection algorithms. Our algorithm will be useful to real-time fire detection in real world.
