  • Two-dimensional finite difference numerical analysis is used to study conjugate natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal conducting tube with one vertical axial fin. By increasing dimensionless fin length ($L_F$), the mean total Nusselt number of the upward fin is slightly less than that of the downward fin at $L_F\;{\le}\;0.18$ and is higher than that of the downward fin at $L_F\;>\;0.18$. However comparing the upward fin and the downward fin with the no fin, the mean total Nusselt numbers of downward fin and upward fin at $L_F=0.30$ are increased approximately 4.01% and 5.51%, respectively. As Rayleigh number, Prandtl number and Biot number increase, the mean total and the mean tube Nusselt numbers are increased, but as wall thickness increases, the mean total and the mean tube Nusselt numbers are decreased. As the fin conduction parameter increases, the mean total Nusselt number is slightly increased because of increasing the mean fin Nusselt number.

  • The steady laminar mixed convection from vertically misaligned, isothermal plastes has been studied by numerical procedure. The governing equations are solved by the finite difference method using successive using successive over relaxation scheme at Re=100-800, $Gr=10^3-10^6$, Pr=0.71 and dimensionless plate spacings b/L=0.1-1.0. The plume interaction caused by the thermal interference of twoplates is observed. As Reynolds numbers increase, the optimum plate spacings are moved to narrow spacings at the same Grashof number and as Grashof numbers increase, to wide spacings at the same Reynolds number.

  • Performance of the asymmetric trapezoidal fin with various upper lateral surface slopes is investigated by using the two-dimensional analytic method. For a fin base boundary condition, convection from the inner fluid to the inner wall, conduction from the inner wall to the fin base and conduction through the fin base are considered. Heat loss and fin efficiency are represented as a function of the fin base thickness, base height, inner fluid convection characteristic number, fin tip length and fin shape factor. One of the results shows that heat loss increases while fin efficiency decreases as the fin shape factor increases.

  • The mixed convection heat transfer has been studied numerically for misaligned and parrallel arrays of two flat plates at 100.leg.Re.leg.700, 0.1.leg.B.leg.1.0, 0.2.leg.leg.PHI.$_{R}$.leg.1Gr=10$^{4}$ and Pr=0.71. For misaligned plates and parallel plates, the optimum plate spacings move to the narrow spacing as Reynolds number and .PHI.$_{R}$ increase and can be expressed by the correlation equations at Gr=10$^{4}$. The optimum plate spacings for parallel plates sharply move to the narrow spacing compared with misaligned plates. The maximum mean Nusselt number of parallel plates shows higher value than that of misaligned plates and can be expressed by the correlation equations at Gr=10$^{4}$.EX>.

  • The solution for the natural convection in internally finned horizontal annuli is obtained by using a numerical simulation of time-dependent and two-dimensional governing equations. The fins existing in annuli influence the flow pattern, temperature distribution and heat transfer rate. The variations of the On configuration suppress or accelerate the free convective effects compared to those of the smooth tubes. The effects of fin configuration, number of fins and ratio of annulus gap width to the inner cylinder radius on the fluid flow and heat transfer in annuli are demonstrated by the distribution of the velocity vector, isotherms and streamlines. The governing equations are solved efficiently by using a parallel implementation. The technique is adopted for reduction of the computation cost. The parallelization is performed with the domain decomposition technique and message passing between sub-domains on the basis of the MPI library. The results from parallel computation reveal in consistency with those of the sequential program. Moreover, the speed-up ratio shows linearity with the number of processor.

  • The effect of radiation and buoyancy on the thermophoresis phenomenon owing to the presence of highly absorbing, emitting particles (such as soot or pulverized coal) suspended in a two phase flow system was investigated numerically for a turbulent mixed convection flow. The analysis of conservation equations for a gas-particle flow system was performed on the basis of a two-fluid model from a continuum Eulerian viewpoint. The modified van Driest and Cebeci mixing length turbulence model was adopted in the anaylsis of turbulent flow. In addition, the P-1 approximation was used to evaluate the radiation heat transfer. As expected from the particle concentration and drift velocity distribution, the cumulative collection efficiency E (x) becomes larger when the buoyancy effect increases (i.e. higher Grashof number), while smaller as the radiation effect increases (i.e. higher optical thickness).

  • Double-diffusive convection during solidification process of the binary mixture was studied numerically. Enthalpy method and finite element method were implemented in the analysis. Calculation carried out for $R{\alpha}_T=10^3-10^4$ and $R{\alpha}_T=0-10^5$. The results show that the variation of thermal Rayleigh number changes the fields of velocity, temperature and concentration, but the variation of solutal Rayleigh number gives little effects on those. In conclusion, concentration gradient can be negligible compared with temperature gradient in macroscopic point of view, although concentration gradient plays a role in forming dendrite.

  • A numerical solution is presented for the natural convection heat transfer from two vertical fins using a spectral finite difference method. Virtual distant boundary conditions for two bodies that are compatible with plume behavior and with an overall continuity condition are introduced. A boundary-fitted coordinate system is formed. Streamlines, isotherms, mean Nusselt numbers and drag & lift coefficients are presented for a variety of dimensionless parameters such as a Grashof number and a Prandtl number at a steady-state. Extensive effectiveness of a spectral finite difference method was established.

  • This numerical study investigate resonance frequency of natural convection for steady state, periodic flow and chaotic flow in two-dimensional direct numerical simulations, differentially heated, vertical cavities having aspect ratios near unity. The enclosure cavity has isothermal and time dependent temperature side walls and adiabatic top/bottom walls. The aspect ratio is 1/3, 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 for the varying Rayleigh number. Resonance frequency for AR=1 has decrease as the aspect ratio and the Rayleigh number are increasing.

  • The steady laminar mixed convection from two finite vertical parallel plates has been studied by numerical procedure. The governing equations are solved by the finite difference method and point successive over relaxation scheme at R3=100-1000, Gr=0-10$^{6}$ , Pr=0.71 and dimensionless plate spacing b/$\ell$=0.05-0.1. The plume interaction caused by the thermal interference of two plates is observed. As Reynolds numbers are increased, optimum plate spacings are moved to narrow spacings at the same Grashof number, and as Grashof numbers are increased, to wide spacings at the same Reynolds number.
