  • This study of thermal convection uses the following geometry: a horizontal layer of fluid heated from below of solid lid at bottom and cooled from above. A variety range of thermal conductivity ratio, $\kappa$ is considered to investigate the interface temperature, $\theta_{i}$ between solid and fluid region. Periodic boundary conditions are employed in the horizontal direction to allow for lateral freedom for the convection cells. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained, using an accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral multi-domain methodology, for different effective Rayleigh numbers, $Ra_{eff}$ varying over the range of $10^{4}\;to\;10^{7}$ in which the effective Rayleigh number is defined as $Ra{\times}<\overline{T}_{i}>$.

  • Convection-dominated melting in a rectangular cavity is analyzed numerically with particular attention to the multi-cellular flows in the melt. At the earlier stage of the melting, the melt region is quite similar to a cavity with high aspect rati71, where the multi-cellular natural convection appears. Numerical results show that the formation and evolution of the multiple flow cells in the melt region is approximately similar to t]tat of a single-phase flow in a tall cavity with the same aspect ratio; however, the continuous change of the melt region due to the melting affects the detailed process. Also, numerical aspects for the prediction of the detailed flow structure in the melt are discussed.

  • Multiple solutions in natural convection of water with Pr=7 between two horizontal plates with small magnitude non-uniform temperature distribution in the upper plate is numerically investigated. The dimensionless temperature of upper plate is ${\theta}={\epsilon}sinkx$. Two upright cells are formed over one wave length in the conduction-dominated regime of small Rayleigh number. However, multicellular convection occurs above a critical Rayleigh number for small wave number. When k = 1.5, dual solutions are found and a transition of $6{\rightarrow}4$ eddy flow occurs with decrease of Rayleigh number. When k = 0.75, two, three, four and five multiple solutions are observed. Transitions of $14{\rightarrow}12$, $12{\rightarrow}10$, $10{\rightarrow}8$ and $6{\rightarrow}8$ eddy flow occur with decrease of Rayleigh number.

  • Flow motion and variation of thermal field around a bubble which attached at the upper cooled solid wall in a $B\dot{e}nard$ convection flow is studied experimentally using thermo-sensitive liquid-crystal tracers and image processing for flow visualization and analysis. The air is injected gradually by $0.1m\ell$ to make the bubble. As the growing of the bubble in a $B\dot{e}nard$ convection flow, the variation of temperature field and surface tension along the bubble, which in turn cause to change the thermal field patterns and the flow direction and patterns. 6 cells flow pattern is transformed into diverse flow pattern. At the large size of a bubble, it's only conduction mechanism under the region of the bubble because of low Ra number 1137, but the convection flow both sides of the bubble leads to another convection flow in the bubble influence area which has been remained stable stagnation.

  • The introduction of the sector coupling concept has expanded the scope of ESS utilization, resulting in the importance of thermal management of ESS. To ensure the safe use of the lithium-ion batteries that are used in ESS, it is important to use the batteries at the optimal temperature. To examine the utilization of liquid cooling in ESS, numerical study was conducted on the thermal characteristics of 21700 battery modules (16S2P array) during liquid cooling using Novec-649 as insulating fluid. The NTGK model, an MSMD model in ANSYS fluent, was used to investigate thermal characteristics on the battery modules with liquid immersion cooling. The results show that the final temperature of the battery module discharged at 5 C-rate is 68.9℃ using natural convection and 48.3℃ using liquid cooling. However, the temperature difference among cells in the battery module was up to 0.5℃ when using natural convection cooling and 5.8℃ when using liquid cooling, respectively, indicating that the temperature difference among cells was significantly increased when liquid cooling was used. As the mass flow rate increased from 0.01 kg/s to 0.05 kg/s, the average temperature of the battery module decreased from 48.3℃ to 38.4℃, confirming that increasing the mass flow rate of the insulating fluid improves the performance of liquid immersion cooling. Although partial liquid immersion cooling has a high cooling performance compared to natural convection cooling, the temperature difference between modules was up to 8.9℃, indicating that the thermal stress of the battery cells increased.

  • The study presents experimental and theoretical analysis focusing on the infulence of a noncondensable gas upon the absorption enhancement that is obtained by Marangoni convection generated by the addition of the surfactant. The shadowgraph method is adopted in this visualization. As a result of absorption phenomena with shadowgraph photos, the different patterns of Marangoni convection cells are observed in accordance with the various amounts of noncondensable gas. Furthermore, non dimensional number K(Ma/Ra) is introduced to calculate the value of surface tension difference theoretically for the comparison with the various amount of non condensable gas in absorber.

  • This study investigates the transition of flows in a natural convection problem with periodic wall temperatures of the form, T/sub L/=T₁+δ Tsinκχ and T/sub L/=T₂+δ Tsinκχ .The fluid considered is air with P/sub γ/=0.7. In the conduction-dominated regime with a small Rayleigh number, two large cells are formed over one wave length, for all wave numbers. When k≤1.8, the flow becomes unstable with increase of the Rayleigh number, and multicellular convection occurs above a critical Rayleigh number. The flow patterns are classified by the number of eddies over one wave length, and several kinds of transition phenomena, such as 2→3→4, 4→3→2, and 2→4 eddy flow, occur with increase( or decrease) of the Rayleigh number. Dual solutions are found above a critical Rayleigh number, and an anomalous bifurcation is observed.

  • The physical model considered here is a horizontal layer of fluid heated below and cooled above with a periodic array of evenly spaced square cylinders placed at the center of the layer, whose aspect ratio here varies from unity to twelve. Periodic boundary condition is employed along the horizontal direction to allow for lateral freedom for the convection cells. Two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained using an accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral multi-domain methodology for a given Rayleigh numbers of $10^{6}$.

  • The scale of photospheric convection in red giants is generally associated, by analogy with the Sun, with the atmospheric pressure scale height and the thickness of the superadiabatic transition layer(SAL). As pointed out by Schwarzschild(1975), both of these quantities are relatively much larger in terms of the stellar radius in a red giant then in the Sun. (omitted)
