  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate stress, depression and health risk behaviors in elderly people. Methods: The subjects were 238 Korean elders who had visited the convalescent center. The level of stress was measured by the Korean version of BEPSI, which was developed by Bae, Jeung & Yoo (1992) and modified by Yim et al.(1996). CES-D was used to measure the level of depression. For health risk behaviors, we measured cigarette consumption and alcohol drinking during the last one month. Results: Of the subjects, 17.4% were excessive drinkers and 18.9% were currently smokers. The level of stress was between moderate and high, and 62.7% of the subjects were depressed. There were significant differences in stress and depression according to economic status and self-reported health. In addition, depression had positive correlations with stress and QF score. Conclusion: Stress and depression management programs for the elderly are needed. These findings indicate that nurses must consider stress and alcohol drinking when they take care of depressed elderly people.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching exercise and joint mobilization on ankle joint range of motion (ROM), plantar pressure, and balance in subjects with stroke. Thirty patients (n=30) were organized into three groups, each of which received different treatments: PNF stretching (n=10), joint mobilization (n=10), and joint mobilization and PNF stretching combined (n=10). Each group received three exercise sessions per week for four weeks. The ankle ROM was measured using a goniometer, and plantar pressure and balance ability were measured using BioResque static posturography. In comparison within each group, the joint mobilization group and the joint mobilization with PNF stretching group showed significant improvements in ankle ROM, plantar pressure, and balance ability (p<.05). In comparison between the groups, a statistically significant difference was found in SECS change between the PNF stretching group, joint mobilization group and the joint mobilization with PNF stretching group. This study found demonstrates that the joint mobilization and joint mobilization with the PNF stretching methods were effective in improving ankle ROM, plantar pressure, and balance ability in stroke patients.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of performing squats and kneeling squats on trunk and lower extremity muscle activity in persons with stroke. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Ten persons with stroke (3 male and 7 female) were recruited. The subjects were instructed to randomly perform the 4 different squat conditions: squat with 30 degrees of knee flexion, squat with 60 degrees of knee flexion, squat with 90 degree of knee flexion, and the kneeling squat. During the squat performance, surface electromyograms (sEMG) was used to assess muscle activity of the erector spinae (ES), gluteus maximus (Gmax), gluteus medius (Gmed), and biceps femoris (BF) muscles. Results: Muscle activation of the ES and BF were significantly increased with the kneeling squats compared to the general squats with 30 degrees and 60 degrees of knee flexion (p<0.05), and muscle activation of the Gmax and Gmed were significantly increased with the kneeling squats compared to all other squat conditions (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results suggest that the kneeling squat is an effective exercise to strengthen the proximal muscles of the lower extremities. Rather than applying a difficult general squat to the stroke population, the kneeling squat may be applied as a safer method for training the proximal muscles.

  • Purpose: Nursing homes are a type of residential care that provide diverse services such as planned activities, convalescent care, skilled nursing and memory care. Nursing homes are good facilities for old people with dementia to improve their quality of life. On the other hand, the subjectivity toward nursing homes can vary to greater or lesser degrees. The purpose of this study was to identify the subjective attitudes and viewpoints toward nursing homes in undergraduate nursing students. Methods: The Q methodology, which is a research method to study the people's subjectivity, was used. The 40 Q-statements selected from each of 43 participants were classified into the shape of a normal distribution. The data collected were analyzed using the QUANL program. Results: Three types of subjectivity toward nursing homes emerged: 'Type I, in terms of usage of nursing homes-hesitative perspectives;', 'Type II, in terms of running of nursing homes-progressive perspectives;', and 'Type III, in terms of admission to nursing homes-constructive perspectives'. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that nursing intervention programs should be developed for the three types. The study results will lead to further research.

  • Purpose In this study, 45 students were divided into task - oriented group, task - oriented intermittent group, and continuous group, and the effect of each variable on learning was changed to angle of the arms' we checked. Methods This study was conducted for 45 days from March 13 to 18, 2017 for five days in the 20 generals living in Changwon city. Dart and goniometer were used for the measurement. In the exercise program, darts were placed on a smooth, hard surface of 1.5M height and the distance to the subject was set 1.5m away. In the dart throw practice, all three groups were marked with an elbow flexion $30^{\circ}$ on the wall, and the subjects were instructed to throw the dart at that point. Results Comparisons between groups showed significant differences between the continuous task-oriented training group and the intermittent task-oriented training group and the control group at the end of training (*** P <0.001). Conclusion This study showed that the intermittent task-oriented training method showed the highest effect (*** P <0.001), which proved that the intermittent method is the most effective exercise method among the three groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of joint mobilization and manual stretching exercises in patients with hallux valgus. Twenty-three participants were divided into two groups; joint mobilization (n=11) and manual stretching exercises (n=12). The subjects participated in the experiment for 15minutes, three times a week, four weeks. The joint mobilization (Grade III, Maitland) was performed to experimental group for a minute and then rested for 10 seconds for each set. The manual stretching was performed to control group with three exercise session (preparatory and finishing exercises, agonist contraction exercises, agonist contraction and hold-relax exercises). In the results of the study, intragroup comparison of the deformity angles (DA) was shown to decrease from $15.18^{\circ}$ to $13.09^{\circ}$ in the joint mobilization group (p<.05) and from $19.00^{\circ}$ to $16.83^{\circ}$ in the stretching exercises group (p<.05). However, left static foot pressure (LSFP), right static foot pressure (RSFP), left dynamic foot pressure (LDFP) and right dynamic foot pressure (RDFP) did not significantly increase or decrease after the experiment. Intergroup differences also were not statistically significant in all variables (p>.05). The current study suggests that JM and MSE are effective in decreasing the DA in patients with hallux valgus.

  • The plan that supports the healthy lives of the aged continuously is required as their population increases constantly. The 'healing environment' for the aged has been emphasized in the geriatric hospitals and convalescent hospitals mainly so far, but most of them are experiencing the unstable status such as fatigue and pain at the level that they can barely manage to carry out daily life. So, the plan of applying design pattern of biophilic in lobby of senior welfare center was willing to be sought in this paper to support the psychological stability and constant health within the range of daily life and activities for the aged. In this research, design pattern elements of biophilic and applying characteristics for each indoor space in lobby of senior welfare center were analyzed through the advanced research, theory consideration and case studies in Korea and foreign countries, and total 22 design pattern elements of biophilic and 52 design elements were drawn. It is expected that it can be used as the guideline and design guide for applying design pattern of biophilic hereafter.
