  • When an information retrieval system is implemented on-line, users can interact with the system to improve the searches. There are studies which achieved dramatic improvements in system effectiveness by using automatic relevance feedback, a technique for reformulating a patron query based on initial retrieval result. In this thesis, an automatic query modification model was applied to a controlled keyword system.

  • The recent growth of full-text database operations has brought new opportunities for subject access. The fundamental problem of subject access in the online environment is the indexing language and technology. The purpose of this paper is to identify the characteristics and capabilities of full-text retrieval as compared to traditional bibliographic retrieval. Retrieval performance of indexing languages, full-text systems features achieved so far, and the new role of a controlled vocabulary, are examined. This paper also includes a review of the research on full-text retrieval performance.

  • The paper introduces the research area of interactive information retrieval (IIR) from a historical point of view. Further, the focus here is on evaluation, because much research in IR deals with IR evaluation methodology due to the core research interest in IR performance, system interaction and satisfaction with retrieved information. In order to position IIR evaluation, the Cranfield model and the series of tests that led to the Cranfield model are outlined. Three iconic user-oriented studies and projects that all have contributed to how IIR is perceived and understood today are presented: The MEDLARS test, the Book House fiction retrieval system, and the OKAPI project. On this basis the call for alternative IIR evaluation approaches motivated by the three revolutions (the cognitive, the relevance, and the interactive revolutions) put forward by Robertson & Hancock-Beaulieu (1992) is presented. As a response to this call the 'IIR evaluation model' by Borlund (e.g., 2003a) is introduced. The objective of the IIR evaluation model is to facilitate IIR evaluation as close as possible to actual information searching and IR processes, though still in a relatively controlled evaluation environment, in which the test instrument of a simulated work task situation plays a central part.

  • This empirical study investigated the effect of choice of record field(s) upon which to search on retrieval performance for a large operational bibliographic database. The query terms used in the study were identified algorithmically from each target set in four different ways: (1) controlled terms derived from index term frequency weights, (2) uncontrolled terms derived from index term frequency weights. (3) controlled terms derived from inverse document frequency weights, and (4) uncontrolled terms based on universe document frequency weights. Su potable choices of record field were recognised. Using INSPEC terminology, these were the fields: (1) Abstract. (2) 'Anywhere'(i.e., ail fields). (3) Descriptors. (4) Identifiers, (5) 'Subject'(i.e., 'Descriptors' plus Identifiers'). and (6) Title. The study was undertaken in an operational web-based IR environment using the INSPEC bibliographic database. The retrieval performances were evaluated using D measure (bivariate in Recall and Precision). The main findings were that: (1) there exist significant differences in search performance arising from choice of field, using 'mean performance measure' as the criterion statistic; (2) the rankings of field-choices for each of these performance measures is sensitive to the choice of query : and (3) the optimal choice of field for the D-measure is Title.

  • An effective image retrieval system is required as the amount of medical imaging data is increasing recently. Authors reviewed the recent development of text-based medical image retrieval including the use of controlled vocabularies - RadLex (Radiology Lexicon), FMA (Foundational Model of Anatomy), etc - natural language processing, semantic ontology, and image annotation and markup.

  • Appearance of full-text online is the most encouraging phenomenon ·during the development of databases. The full-text databases of today is derived from by-product of electronic publication of printed materials. Now, there are also some movements toward electronic production of documents in Korea although not powerful. The present study is designed to examine the characteristics and effective retrieval method of full-text databases now commercially available through various vendors. The outline of this paper IS as follows: First, background and present situation of existing full-text database services through national and worldwide are examined. Second, free-text searching system of full-text databases is compared with controlled vocabulary system. The factors influencing on free-text retrieval performance, searching thesaurus, and hybrid or compromising system, which is using limited controlled vocabulary in conjunction with natural language for the enrichment needed for practical operation of the . system, are examined. Third, user demands through the analysis of preceding studies on 'various types of full-text databases are recognised. Fouth, application of CD-ROM full-text database to the libraries and information centers is examined as prospective resources for them. Finally, some problems and prospect of full-text databases are presented.

  • Pseudonyms must be maintained anonymously even to the organization that issues the pseudonyms, but when some event occurs that policy defines the real identity for the pseudonym must be able to be traced. We propose a private pseudonym retrieval protocol with controlled traceability using m-out-of-n oblivious transfer and cut-and-choose technique.

  • Tn this paper, We propose a user friendly object-based multimedia retrieval system using the HCNN(HippoCampus Neural Network. Most existing approaches to content-based retrieval rely on query by example or user based low-level features such as color, shape, texture. In this paper we perform a scene change detection and key frame extraction for the compressed video stream that is video compression standard such as MPEG. We propose a method for automatic color object extraction and ACE(Adaptive Circular filter and Edge) of content-based multimedia retrieval system. And we compose multimedia retrieval system after learned by the HCNN such extracted features. Proposed HCNN makes an adaptive real-time content-based multimedia retrieval system using excitatory teaming method that forwards important features to long-term memories and inhibitory learning method that forwards unimportant features to short-term memories controlled by impression.

  • This paper presents a method for the multilingual product retrieval agent through XML and the semantic networks in e-commerce. Retrieval for products is an important process, since it represents interfaces of the customer contact to the e-commerce. Keyword-based retrieval is efficient as long as the product information is structured and organized. But when the product information is expressed across many online shopping malls, especially when it is expressed in different languages with cultural backgrounds, buyers' product retrieval needs language translation with ambiguities resolved in a specific context. This paper presents a RDF modeling case that resolves semantic problems in the representation of product information and across the boundaries of language domains. With adoption of UNSPSC code system, this paper designs and implements an architecture for the multilingual product retrieval agents. The architecture is based on the central repository model of product catalog management with distributed updating processes. It also includes the perspectives of buyers and suppliers. And the consistency and version management of product information are controlled by UNSPSC code system. The multilingual product names are resolved by semantic networks, thesaurus and ontology dictionary for product names.

  • As shown in Wikipedia, tagging or cross-linking through major keywords in a document collection improves not only the readability of documents but also responsive and adaptive navigation among related documents. In recent years, the Semantic Web has increased the importance of social tagging as a key feature of the Web 2.0 and, as its crucial phenotype, Tag Cloud has emerged to the public. In this paper we provide an efficient method of automated in-text keyword tagging based on large-scale controlled term collection or keyword dictionary, where the computational complexity of O(mN) - if a pattern matching algorithm is used - can be reduced to O(mlogN) - if an Information Retrieval technique is adopted - while m is the length of target document and N is the total number of candidate terms to be tagged. The result shows that automatic in-text tagging with keywords filtered by Information Retrieval speeds up to about 6 $\sim$ 40 times compared with the fastest pattern matching algorithm.
