  • This paper presents a design of an impedance transformer (IT) with high frequency selectivity characteristics. The frequency selectivity can be controlled by even- and odd-mode impedance of a shunt coupled transmission line (TL). For experimental validation, a 50- to $20-{\Omega}$ IT was implemented at a center frequency ($f_0$) of 2.6 GHz for the long-term evolution signal. The measured results were in good agreement with the simulations, showing a return loss higher than 19 dB over a passband bandwidth of 0.63 GHz (2.28-2.91 GHz) and good sharp frequency selectivity characteristic near to the passband. The series coupled TL provides a transmission zero at 5.75 GHz, whereas the shunt coupled TL provides three transmission zeros located at 2 GHz, 3.1 GHz, and 7.14 GHz.

  • For more convenient electrode-electrolyte interface impedance analysis in biosensor, a stand-alone impedance measurement system is required. In our study, we developed a PC-based portable system to analyze impedance of the electrochemical cell using microprocessor. The devised system consists of signal generator, programmable amplifiers, A/D converter, low pass filter, potentiostat, I/V converter, microprocessor, and PC interface. As a microprocessor, PIC16F877 which has the processing speed of 5 MIPS was used. For data acquisition, the sampling rate at 40 k samples/sec, resolution of 12 bit is used. RS-232 with 115.2 kbps speed is used for the PC communication. The square wave was used as stimuli signal for impedance analysis and voltage-controlled current measurement method of three-electrode-method were adopted. Acquired voltage and current data are calculated to multifrequency impedance signal after Fourier transform. To evaluate the implemented system, we set up the dummy cell as equivalent circuit of which was composed of resistor, parallel circuit of capacitor and resistor connected in parallel and measured the impedance of the dummy cell; the result showed that there exist accuracy within 5 % errors and reproduction within 1 % errors compared to output of Hioki LCR tester and HP impedance analyzer as a standard product. These results imply that it is possible to analyze electrode-electrolyte interface impedance quantitatively in biosensor and to implement the more portable high speed impedance analysis system compared to existing systems.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive trajectory generation strategy of using on-line ZMP information and an impedance control method for biped robots. Since robots experience various disturbances during their locomotion, their walking mechanism should have the robustness against those disturbances, which requires an on-line adaptation capability. In this context, an on-line trajectory planner is proposed to compensate the required moment for recovering stability. The ZMP equation and sensed ZMP information are used in this trajectory generation strategy. In order to control a biped robot to be able to walk stably, its controller should guarantee stable footing at the moment of feet contacts with the ground as well as maintaining good trajectory tracking performance. Otherwise, the stability of robot will be significantly compromised. To reduce the magnitude of an impact and guarantee a stable footing when a foot contacts with the ground, this paper. proposes to increase the damping of the leg drastically and to modify the reference trajectory of the leg. In the proposed control scheme, the constrained leg is controlled by impedance control using the impedance model with respect to the base link. Computer simulations performed with a 3-dof environment model that consists of combination of a nonlinear and linear compliant contact model show that the proposed controller performs well and that it has robustness against unknown uneven surface. Moreover, the biped robot with the proposed trajectory generator can walk even when it is pushed with a certain amount of external force.

  • Structural health monitoring results obtained with the electro-mechanical (E/M) impedance techniqueand Lamb wave transmission methods during fatigue crack propagation of an Arcan specimen instrumented with piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) are presented. The specimen was subjected in mixed-mode fatigue loading and a crack was propagated in stages. At each stage, an image of the crack and the location of the crack tip were recorded and the PWAS readings were taken. Hence, the crack-growth in the specimen could be correlated with the PWAS readings. The E/M impedance signature was recorded in the 100 - 500 kHz frequency range. The Lamb-wave transmission method used the pitch-catch approach with a 3-count sine tone burst of 474 kHz transmitted and received between various PWAS pairs. Fatigue loading was applied to initiate and propagate the crack damage of controlled magnitude. As damage progressed, the E/M impedance signatures and the waveforms received by receivers were recorded at predetermined intervals and compared. Data analysis indicated that both the E/M impedance signatures and the Lamb-wave transmission signatures are modified by the crack progression. Damage index values were observed to increase as the crack damage increases. These experiments demonstrated that the use of PWAS in conjunction with the E/M impedance and the Lamb-wave transmission is a potentially powerful tool for crack damage detection and monitoring in structural elements.

  • This paper presents a PQ control strategy for micro grid inverters with axial voltage regulators. The inverter works in the voltage-controlled mode and can help improve the terminal power quality. The inverter has two axial voltage regulators. The 1st regulator involves the output voltage amplitude and output impedance, while the 2nd regulator controls the output frequency. The inverter system is equivalent to a controllable voltage source with a controllable inner output impedance. The basic PQ control for micro grid inverters is easy to accomplish. The output active and reactive powers can be decoupled well by controlling the two axial voltages. The 1st axial voltage regulator controls the reactive power, while the 2nd regulator controls the active power. The paper analyses the axial voltage regulation mechanism, and evaluates the PQ decoupling effect mathematically. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is validated by simulation and experimental results.

  • The droop-based control strategy is widely applied in the interfacing inverters for distributed generation. This can be a problem since low-frequency stability issues may be encountered in droop-based microgrid. The objective of this paper is to classify, evaluate and compare various low-frequency damping methods. First, low-frequency stability problems are analyzed and an equivalent model of a droop-controlled inverter is investigated to classify the damping methods into the source-type damping strategies and the impedance-type damping strategies. Moreover, the lead-lag compensation network insertion control is proposed as a beneficial part of the source-type damping strategies. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of damping methods are theoretically evaluated and experimentally tested. Furthermore, the damping methods are comprehensively compared to illustrate the application field of each method. Finally, the synthesis of different damping methods to enhance the low-frequency stability is discussed and experimental validation is presented.

  • This paper presents a method for harmonic elimination and reactive power compensation using an intervening firing method and passive power filter with is suitable to compensate rapidly changing loads and reactive power. The proliferation of three-phase thyristor phase-controlled converter of DC motor drives into a power system has the potential to increase the harmonic levels in the power system. The design procedure of an intervening firing method and passive power filter capable of reducing the voltage and current harmonics produced by converter supplied from a source having internal large inductive impedance is offered. The analysis uses the or CAD PSpice to model three-phase thyristor phase-controlled converter of DC motor drives as well as the system.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method of the millimeter-wave(W-Band) waveguide cavity harmonic voltage controlled oscillator(VCO) using a Gunn diode for the armor sensor. Using the 3-dimensional simulation tool(Ansoft $HFSS^{TM}$), we were able to find the impedance matching point between waveguide and Gunn diode and estimate the oscillation frequency. A varactor diode is used for the frequency tuning, and we find out the equation for the calculation of the tunable frequency range. The designed VCO shows good performances; 17dBm output power at 94GHz center frequency, 520MHz frequency tuning range similar to the estimated value(480MHz).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of mechanical stimulation and growth regulators known to control overgrowth in hot temperature tomato transplants on the seedling quality and the growth and yield after planting. Brushing and impedance were applied as mechanical stimulation, and diniconazole and hexaconazole as chemical growth regulator were used in various ways at different concentrations and treatment times. Diniconazole treatment regardless of concentration and treatment times reduced plant height, leaf area and fresh weight of young plant. Though treatments of high concentration and many times reduced the yield of tomato after planting, these of proper amount and proper times maintained the level of control. Hexaconazole treatment controlled less plant height of transplants than diniconazole, and its effect also didn't support continuously after planting. However, hexaconazole treatment reduced the yield due to little fruit number and malformed plants, and also delayed the harvesting time as compared to the control. Both brushing and impedance controlled plant height of transplants. However, impedance treatment reduced the yield due to malformed plants after planting, and also delayed the harvesting time, while brushing treatment didn't reduced growth and yield as compared to the control. From the above results, it was thought that proper application of brushing and diniconazole can control excessive overgrowth without reducing yield.

  • In this paper, we proposed an HF-band wireless power transfer system with adaptive frequency control circuit for efficiency enhancement in a short range. In general, a wireless power transfer system shows an impedance mismatching due to a reflected impedance, because a coupling coefficient is varied with respect to separation distance between two resonating loop antennas. The proposed method can compensate this impedance mismatching by varying input frequency of a voltage-controlled oscillator adaptively with respect to separation distance. Therefore, transmission efficiency is enhanced in a short distance, where large impedance mismatch occurs. The adaptive frequency circuit consists of a directional coupler, a detector, and a loop filter. In order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed system, a wireless power transfer system with adaptive frequency control circuits is designed and implemented, which has a pair of loop antennas with a dimension of 30${\times}$30 $cm^2$. From measured results, the proposed system shows enhanced efficiency performance than the case without adaptive frequency control.
