Goethite, ${\alpha}$-FeOOH have various applications such as absorbent, pigment and source for magnetic materials. Goethite particles were synthesized in a two step process, where $Fe(OH)_2$ were synthesized in nitrogen atmosphere using $FeSO_4$ as a raw material in the first process, and after that acicular goethite particles were obtained in an air oxidation process of $Fe(OH)_2$ in highly alkaline aqueous solution. Their phase and microstructure were investigated with XRD and FE-SEM. It was found that the morphology of goethite and the ratio of length-to-width (aspect ratio) of acicular goethite are dependent on the some factors such as R value ($OH^-/Fe^{2+}$), air flow rate and pH conditions. In particular, R value has the strongest influence on the synthesized goethite morphology. It is considered that the optimal value R is 4.5 because X-ray diffraction peaks of goethite have the highest intensity at that value. Morphology of goethite particles was controlled by air flow rates, showing that their size and aspect ratio are getting smaller and decrease, respectively as air flow rate increases. The largest goethite particle obtained is about 1,500 nm in length and 150 nm in diameter.
Cereal grains are the most important food source for humans. As the global population continues to grow exponentially, the need for the enhanced yield and minimal loss of agricultural crops, mainly cereal grains, is increasing. In general, harvested grains are stored for specific time periods to guarantee their continuous supply throughout the year. During storage, economic losses due to reduction in quality and quantity of grains can become very significant. Grain loss is usually the result of its deterioration due to fungal contamination that can occur from preharvest to postharvest stages. The deleterious fungi can be classified based on predominance at different stages of crop growth and harvest that are affected by environmental factors such as water activity ($a_w$) and eco-physiological requirements. These fungi include species such as those belonging to the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium that can produce mycotoxins harmful to animals and humans. The grain type and condition, environment, and biological factors can also influence the occurrence and predominance of mycotoxigenic fungi in stored grains. The main environmental factors influencing grain fungi and mycotoxins are temperature and $a_w$. This review discusses the effects of temperature and $a_w$ on fungal growth and mycotoxin production in stored grains. The focus is on the occurrence and optimum and minimum growth requirements for grain fungi and mycotoxin production. The environmental influence on aflatoxin production and hypothesized mechanisms of its molecular suppression in response to environmental changes are also discussed. In addition, the use of controlled or modified atmosphere as an environmentally safe alternative to harmful agricultural chemicals is discussed and recommended future research issues are highlighted.

The one-way gas valve developed in this study was designed to prevent the breakage of packages from increased internal pressure, which is a problem in packaged Kimchi, and simultaneously reduce the outflow of the offodor release. The effect of the one-way gas valve on the headspace atmospheric compositions was investigated in the packaging system. The changes of atmospheric compositions and quality factors of Kimchi, such as $CO_2$ accumulation, pH, titratable acidity, and salinity, were measured during a 4-week storage period at $4^{\circ}C$. The Kimchi package with the one-way gas valve dramatically reduced pressure build-up in the pouch by allowing the controlled flow of gas to the atmosphere. In addition, the package design allows the possibility of controlling the gas generated from Kimchi by adjusting the viscosity of the open pressure control oil. The one-way gas valve did not affect the sensory characteristics of Kimchi products during the storage period. Furthermore, the deodorizing capability of the activated carbon contained in the one-way gas valve effectively reduced the off-odor of Kimchi products released along with carbon dioxide. The novel one-way gas valve is considered to be an active packaging system that can solve major problems of expansion and off-odor leakage in the packaging of Kimchi.
Bias correction (BC) and quality control (QC) are essential steps for the proper use of satellite observations in data assimilation (DA) system. BC should be calculated over quality controlled observation. And also QC should be performed for bias corrected observation. In the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS) Package for Observation Processing (KPOP), we adopted an adaptive BC method that calculates the BC coefficients with background at the analysis time rather than using static BC coefficients. In this study, we have developed an iterative QC-BC method for Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) to reduce the negative feedback from the interaction between BC and QC. The new iterative QC-BC is evaluated in the KIAPS 3-dimensional variational (3DVAR) DA cycle for January 2016. The iterative QC-BC method for AMSU-A shows globally significant benefits for error reduction of the temperature. The positive impacts for the temperature were predominant at latitudes of $30^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$ of both hemispheres. Moreover, the background warm bias across the troposphere is decreased. Even though AMSU-A is mainly designed for atmospheric temperature sounding, the improvement of AMSU-A pre-processing module has a positive impact on the wind component over latitudes of $30^{\circ}S$ near upper-troposphere, respectively. Consequently, the 3-day-forecast-accuracy is improved about 1% for temperature and zonal wind in the troposphere.
In this study, heterogeneous ZnO/CNTF composites were developed to improve the NO2-sensing response, facilitated by the self-heating property. Highly conductive and mechanically stable CNTFs were prepared by a wet-spinning process assisted by the liquid crystal (LC) behavior of CNTs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of ZIF-8 were precipitated on the surface of the CNTF (ZIF-8/CNTF) via one-pot synthesis in solution. The subsequent calcination process resulted in the formation of the ZnO/CNTF composites. The calcination temperatures were controlled at 400, 500, and 600 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere to confirm the evolution of the microstructures and NO2-sensing properties. Gas sensor characterization was performed at 100 ℃ by applying a DC voltage to induce Joule heating through the CNTF. The results revealed that the ZnO/CNTF composite after calcination at 500 ℃ (ZnO/CNTF-500) exhibited an improved response (Rair/Rgas = 1.086) toward 20 ppm NO2 as compared to the pristine CNTF (Rair/Rgas = 1.063). Selective NO2-sensing properties were demonstrated with negligible responses toward interfering gas species such as H2S, NH3, CO, and toluene. Our approach for the synthesis of MOF-driven ZnO/CNTF composites can provide a new strategy for the fabrication of wearable gas sensors integrated with textile materials.
The safety and storage periods of various foods, including dairy products, can be affected by a variety of internal and external factors. Therefore, all foods have a risk of deterioration after storage for a certain period of time for many different reasons. Among dairy products, cheese is enriched in necessary nutrients; however, it can also easily undergo physical, chemical, and biochemical changes under various conditions. Therefore, the storage period of cheese is an important issue. If various factors that can affect the safety and storage period of cheese can be controlled, the safety of cheese can be preserved and its storage period extended. This review of the literature published on the issue summarizes various state-of-the-art technologies currently used to extend the storage period of cheese without affecting its quality. This basic data will inform future research concerning the storage period of various cheeses.
We analyzed the observed characteristics of monoterpene and developed an empirical formula for monoterpene concentration in the pine-dominated mixed forest of the National Center for Forest Therapy. Monoterpene was measured at 0800, 1200 and 1700 LST once a month using sorbent tube sampling coupled with thermal desorption gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Monoterpene concentration is low in winter and shows a maximum in June and July. The major components of monoterpene are alpha-pinene, camphene and beta-pinene. During the warm period from May to November, monoterpene concentration is higher at 0800 and 1700 LST than at 1200 LST. The empirical formula takes into account the vegetation variables, temperature-controlled emission, oxidation processes and dilution by wind. The vegetation variable accounts for the difference in observed monoterpene concentration between two sites. The observed monoterpene concentration normalized by the vegetation variable increases exponentially with air temperature. The oxidation process explains the lower monoterpene concentration at 1200 LST than at 0800 and 1700 LST during the warm period. The monoterpene estimates using the empirical formula shows a correlation of 0.52 with the observation for the development period (2018~2020), while it shows a correlation of 0.72 for the validation year (2021). Such higher correlation for the validation year than for the development period is due to the fact that variability of monoterpene concentration is better explained by air temperature in 2021 than in the development period. However, the developed formula underestimates the monoterpene concentration in May and June, showing the limitation in accurately capturing the monthly variation of monoterpene.
Effects of postharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment, controlled atmosphere (CA) storage, and shelf temperature on quality of 'Gamhong' apples were analyzed during export simulation. Fruits were harvested at the optimum maturity for long-term storage, treated with $1{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP for 16 hours, and then stored for 6 months under air and CA conditions at $0^{\circ}C$. Poststorage export procedure was performed by applying additional 2-week refrigerated storage and 7-day shelf-life test at 7 and $20^{\circ}C$, which simulated container shipment and local distribution, respectively. After storage and during export simulation, rates of respiration and ethylene evolution were significantly lower in 1-MCP treated and CA-stored apples. For the reduction of respiration, CA storage was more effective than 1-MCP treatment. Soluble solids content was maintained higher in 1-MCP treated apples, while titratable acidity was maintained better both in the 1-MCP treated and CA-stored apples. Effects of 1-MCP treatment and CA storage were highly significant in maintaining flesh firmness and sensory texture ratings. Additive effects from combined application of 1-MCP treatment and CA storage were occasionally observed. Shelf temperature during the local distribution simulation seemed not to significantly influence quality changes only showing limited effects on flesh firmness. Overall results suggest that storage potential of 'Gamhong' apples is shorter than 4 months in control fruit under refrigerated air conditions, whereas the potential can be extended to longer than 6 months by 1-MCP treatment and CA storage. Postharvest program should be provided considering the time of export, i.e. period of storage, and duration of local distribution.
This study aimed to evaluate the fruit quality characteristics and incidence of flesh browning in response to air storage at $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ a fter controlled atmosphere s torage (CA condition: $O_2$$2.5{\pm}0.5$%, $CO_2$$1.5{\pm}0.5$%) at $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ in 'Fuji' apples (Malus domestica Borkh.). The storage system was performed as followed: air storage for one month, CA storage 4 months + air storage 3 months ( CA 4M + A ir 3M), CA storage 5 m onths + air storage 2 months ( CA 5M + Air 2M) a nd C A storage 6 m onths + air storage 1months (CA 6M + Air 1M), while the control fruits were stored at CA storage for 8 months right after harvest. The incidence of flesh browning ranged from 17.1% to 30.2% during CA storage but not detected under the treatments of CA 4M + Air 3M and CA 5M + Air 2M. The respiration rate was not affected by storage treatments for 6M while the respiration rate was lower in the treatments of CA 4M + Air 3M and CA 5M + Air 2M than the other storage treatments after 7 months. Ethylene production and internal ethylene concentration were lowest in rapid CA storage and increased with a decreasing CA storage duration. Therefore, the results indicate that CA 5M + Air 2M storage treatment should be recommended to maintain the fruit quality and reduce the risk development of flesh browning rather than typical CA storage in 'Fuji' apples.
The CA(Controlled Atmosphere) storage of cherry tomatoes were carried out under seven gas compositions including air. The weight loss of cherry tomatoes progressively increased with storage time. In the case of cherry tomatoes stored under CA conditions, increment of weight loss was reduced. However, cherry tomatoes (in air) tut about 15% weight at the end of storage. In CA stored cherry tomatoes lost about 10% weight at the same time. General trend was a decrease in titratable acidity with storage time. In air md 6.4% O$_2$, 4.2% CO$_2$, titratable acidity was lower than that in other storage conditions. During storage of cherry tomatoes, soluble solids increased till 8 days of storage, and then decreased. Stored cherry tomatoes in air and 6.4% O$_2$+4.2% CO$_2$ have lower values. Lycopene contents of cherry tomatoes with 6% O$_2$ storage condition increased and cherry tomatoes with 1% O$_2$+6% CO$_2$ and 3% O$_2$+3.1% CO$_2$maintained s initial contents. In air, flesh firmness decrease till 8 days, and then increase. At 1% O$_2$+6% CO$_2$ ethanol contents were ten times to that of other experimental conditions. Air and 6% O$_2$+7.8% CO$_2$ condition had lowest value for the ethanol content. In changes of organic acid and citric acid decreased slowly during storage, malic acid in air and below 3% O$_2$was disappeared at 8 days. Above 4% O$_2$concentration malic acid contents were maintained till 16 days. In over all acceptability, air and 6.4% O$_2$+7.8% CO$_2$ condition took a good score from the panel. Quality of stored cherry tomatoes was not edible condition in 1% O$_2$+6% CO$_2$. CA storage cherry tomatoes took a good score in firmness and juiciness where as control received good score in color and sweetness. This result was explained that in air ad 6.4% O$_2$+7.8% CO$_2$stored cherry tomato was ripened and full color development, but in CA was break stage because of suppressed ripening.
