  • The free-model concept is introduced as an alternative intelligent system technique to design a controller with input and output data only. The idea of free model comes from the Taylor series approximation, where an output can be estimated when such data as position, velocity, and acceleration are known. The parameters in the free model can be estimated using the input-output data and a controller can be designed based on the free model. The free model thus developed is shown to be controllable, observable, and robust. The accuracy of the free-model approximation can be improved by increasing the observation window and the order of the free model.   • In this study, the characteristics of the load-sensitive hydraulic control system for closed center type of a wheel loader were analyzed using developed analysis program based on Amesim tool. From the parametric analysis, the effects of each factor were revealed. Through the simulation with varying parameters, the system parameter effects on the controllable region and the pump pressure and load pressure variations were studied. The results were compared with the experimental ones. The results and discussions of the present paper could aid in the design of a load-sensitive hydraulic control system for closed center type.

  • This paper presents yaw vibration control performances of railway vehicle featuring controllable magnetorheological damper. A cylindrical type of MR damper is devised and its damping force is evaluated by considering fluid resistance and MR effect. Design parameters are determined to achieve desired damping force level. The MR damper model is then incorporated with the governing equations of motion of the railway vehicle which includes vehicle body, bogie and wheel-set. Subsequently, computer simulation of vibration control via proportional-integral-derivative(PID) controller is performed using Matlab. Various control performances are demonstrated under external excitation by creep force between wheel and rail.

  • This paper presents a novel type of a semiactive damper featuring an electro-rheological(ER) fluid. Unlike conventional cylindrical ER damper, the proposed one has controllable orifices by the intensity of electric fields (We call it orifice type). The dynamic model of the orifice type ER damper is formulated by incorporating field-dependent Bingham properties of an arabic gum-based ER fluid. Design parameters such as electrode gap are subsequently determined on the basis of the dynamic model. After manufacturing the orifice type ER damper, field-dependent damping forces and damping force controllability are empirically evaluated. In the evaluation procedure, conventional cylindrical ER damper is adopted and its performance characteristics are compared with those of the orifice type ER damper. In addition, the proposed one is installed with a full-car model and its vibration control performance associated with a skyhook controller is investigated.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) has become widely accepted for the planarization of multi-interconnect structures in semiconductor manufacturing. However, perfect planarization is not so easily ahieved because it depends on the pattern sensitivity, the large number of controllable process parameters, and the absence of a reliable process model, etc. In this paper, we realized the planarization of deposited oxide layers followed by metal (W) polishing as a replacement for tungsten etch-back process for via formation. Atomic force microscope (AFM) is used for the evaluation of pattern topography during CMP. As a result, AFM evaluation is very attractive compared to conventional methods for the measurment of planarity. mOreover, it will contribute to analyze planarization characteristics and establish CMP model.

  • In this paper, we were designed the ferroelectric phase shifter using 3-dB, $90^{\circ}$ branch-line hybrid coupler with two ports terminated in symmetric phase-controllable reflective networks. The design of phase shifter is based on reflection theory of terminating circuits. In order to find the optimum conditions of reflect phase, the effect of a change of capacitance and transmission line connected with two coupled ports of a coupler have been investigated. To obtain more accurate design parameters, finite element method is applied. We were showed large phase variation with small capacitance variation in the parallel connection of capacitor and transmission line by using EM-simulation and circuit-simulation.

  • This paper is to experimentally investigate the effect of the through-flow and grazing-flow on the absorption performance of a perforated plate system. The experiment is performed through the systematic change of the through-flow velocity, grazing-flow velocity, incident sound pressure level, and the geometrical parameters such as the porosity and hole diameter. From the experimental results, it is found that for the nonlinear relationship between the acoustic resistance and incident sound pressure level there is no influence of the through-flow on the absorption performance, but fur the linear relationship between them there is a strong dependence of the absorption performance on the through-flow velocity. It is also shown that the absorption performance is controllable by changing the porosity and hole-diameter in size.
