  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of the natural deep sea water, which contained approximately 2.3% salt, and various minerals of K, Mg, Ca, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu etc, on the immune response and antioxidant activity in rats. 24 Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allotted to a control group and 3 treatment groups. Control rats were supplied with filtered tap water, and each treatment group rats were supplied with 0.5% deep sea water, 1% deep sea water and Jijangsoo, respectively, which is upper clear water separated from sediment by the clay. Feed and water were provided ad libitum throughout the experiment that lasted for 4 weeks. The results showed that 1% deep sea water group showed the highest values in weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency than those of other groups. The levels of water intake of 1%- and 0.5%-deep sea water, and Jijangsoo group were 49.1%, 22.8%, and 40.5% higher than that of control group, respectively. The Jijangsoo group rats showed that perirenal and epididymal adipose tissue weights were decreased by 32% and 25%(p<0.05), respectively, when compared to control group rats. There were no remarkable differences of serum glucose concentration among all experimental groups. However, insulin concentration of experimental groups were remarkably increased in order of Jijangsoo (4.54), 1% deep sea water (3.70), 0.5% deep sea water (3.25)(p<0.05). B cell and T cell stimulation were increased about 44.7% and 207%, respectively, by 0.5% deep sea water in comparison with control (p<0.05). TBARS values of 0.5 % deep sea water group were significantly lower than that of control(p<0.05). Catalase and SOD activities of 0.5 % deep sea water group were 200% and 47% higher than that of control, respectively. From the results, it can be concluded that the supply of natural deep sea water can slightly improve the physiological activity which modulates immune response and antioxidant activity in rats.

  • The Deep-sea miner system is composed of body, actuators, sensors, and devices for control and monitoring. At present, we are manufacturing the miner's body included actuators and already consisted with off-the-shelf embedded controller. But sensors and those devices were just determined. To previously test performance of embedded controller which manages control and monitoring of miner system, its simulator must be developed for control and monitoring. Hardware-In-the-Loop(HIL) simulation is being increasingly used in industrial applications. This is an effective tool for the evaluation of electric system and drives. In the HIL simulator, we can test and design the control and monitoring system freely without the risk of hardware ruins and the load of expenses. Also the programming software for miner operating is verified on the HIL simulator. In this paper, we introduce the concept of HIL simulator for control and monitoring of deep-sea miner.

  • In this study, the electrical power consumption saving effect is studied through installing an inverter which is able to control the R.P.M. of marine sea water pump by effective flow control. The study looks at how sea water pump's flow control influences on the system without the Marine Growths Protection System(MGPS). Auxiliary sea water pump and refrigerator sea water pump in training ships, which are always operated not only in harbor but also in navigation, was used in the experiment and the experiment was conducted by dividing into harbor and navigation. As a result of research, in the case the sea water temperature is under $18^{\circ}C$, the operation was possible with a 58.3 % decrease in pump R.P.M. and electric power consumption was saved by 50 %. In spite of the sea water temperature increasing upto $34^{\circ}C$, pump R.P.M. at 91.6 % was sufficient to operate with a 20 % electric power consumption saving effect. In the pipelines without MGPS, lowering R.P.M. along with lowering pressure results in the attachment of various marine growths.

  • The anti-hyperlipidemic effects of dietary supplementation with sea tangle Laminaria japonica were investigated using an animal model in which normal rats were fed either sea tangle, sea tangle ethanol extract (EE-ST) and sea tangle extracted residue (ER-ST). Total lipid and triglyceride levels in the serum were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in rats fed ER-ST at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight when compared to hyperlipidemic control rats. Significant decreases in serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels also occurred in rats fed ER-ST at 200 mg/kg body weight. In addition, the atherosclerosis index and superoxide dismutase in blood lipids were significantly (P < 0.05) lowered in rats fed ER-ST at 200 mg/kg body weight as compared to control rats. In conclusion, sea tangle and ER-ST exhibited beneficial anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-arteriosclerosis effects.

  • A measurement technique of a sea height of burst is introduced for a proximate test using the image recognition of video cameras. In the burst of fuse on the ocean, the burst center of fuse, the sea surface level and the height of calibration poles are measured by the process of image obtained from cameras. Finally, the height of burst of fuse can be computed by Hough transform algorithm. The error compensation algorithms are proposed to eliminate the errors caused by camera level and environmental parameters. As a result of experiment, it has been proved that the proposed measurement system shows the recognition of the center point of the burst image with ${\pm}$0.5m error.

  • At recently, Oil spill accident of large size oiler that happen domestic and outside the country is occured to social impact us as well as economical damage in sea environment. Also, because spread extent of pollution accident is reaching harbor, bay and close water areas, as necessity that traffic control ships are sea place. VTS is changing to concept that control space is magnified gradually. Our country is operated to 14 harbors which is control center. But abroad is operating coastal VTS that do main waterway and coastals to authority dimension. Therefore, necessity that traffic density of ship manages high coastals and ship traffic of waterway to our country is risen. This paper is execute sea traffic survey at Mokop sea areas and sea casualty occurs. It proposal that coastal VTS center field of most suitable and position of radar site.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the addition of various concentrations of sea mustard powder on the quality characteristics of Bacsulgi. The sea mustard powder was added to rice powder at ratios of 3, 5, 7, and 9%(w/w). The moisture contents and salinity of Bacsulgi were increased with the addition of sea mustard powder. The incorporation of sea mustard powder in Bacsulgi lowered the lightness values but increased the blueness and yellowness values. Rheology test showed that hardness was significantly (p<0.05) decreased with increasing sea mustard powder content. The springiness and cohesiveness were decreased, whereas the adhesiveness was increased, with increasing sea mustard powder content. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the size of the air cells increased and the surface of rice powder swelled with increasing sea mustard powder content. The result of sensory evaluation showed that there were significant (p<0.05) differences in the scores of smell and taste sensory characteristics among the samples. The overall eating quality was the highest in the control and decreased with increasing sea mustard powder level. The study results suggested that Bacsulgi prepared with up to 5% addition of sea mustard powder was as acceptable as Bacsulgi prepared without sea mustard powder.

  • Since a snake achieves various movements just by a slender body, the mechanism of it is very amazing Many researches have been focusing on a snake like robot and have done for it on the ground. However the meander motion of the snake not only can be done by ground creatures, but also can be done by a water creature such as a sea snake or an eel. Therefore, the purpose of our research is to develop an autonomous underwater robot like the sea snake. As an approach to this goal, we develop an experimental sea snake-like-robot for examining basic characteristics, including propulsion, a turning and other performance. Our developed robot is composed of the head and 4 bodies. Each body equips one servomotor, which is operated with pulse signal. In the head unit, 1- chip-microcomputer, which generates the servomotor control signal for realizing a snake motion and the battery, is equipped. Our robot is covered with a rubber film for the waterproof. Using our developed robot, characteristics of the snake-like-robot moved in water are examined.

  • Since ocean dumping of wastes was permitted by law in 1900, the amount of wastes dumped into the sea has increased ten times for 15 years. As a result, the dumping sites has been deteriorated so much that the pollution has become a social problem. The 96 Protocol to the 72 London Convention, which requires the contracting party's stricter control on the disposal of wastes at sea, took effect on March 24, 2006. Therefore, our country has become confronted to the situation on which it cannot delay putting a restraint on ocean dumping. Hereupon, Korea Coast Guard (KCG) initiates a dumping sites recovery program. The program is intended to curb the amount of wastes dumped at sea and to recover the polluted dumping sites. In this paper, the current status of our country's management of ocean dumping of wastes is examined and the future condition is anticipated KCG's ocean dumping management measures are also presented.

  • To investigate the effect of sea tangle on immune function in normal and diabetic states, 10-week old ICR mice were feed control(C) and sea tangle(5) diets containing 5%(w/w) cellulose and 13.6%(w/w) dry sea tangle for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, three quarters of mice(CD and SD) were made diabetic by intramuscular injection of streptozotocin(150mg/kg bw). On the 4th day after diabetes was apparent by urinary glucose, one third of diabetic mire(CDG and SDG) were treated with glipizide(20mg/kg bw) and the other third(CDM and SDM) with metformin (500mg/kg bw) orally. Spleen weights of diabetic mice with no hypoglycemic drug treatment appeared to be higher in the sea tangle group(SD) than in control(CD), but were not different when drugs were administered. Data on splenocyte proliferation stimulated by lipopolysaccaride from Salmonella abortus equi(0.l$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) showed that sea tangle increased mitogen response in normal mice(C group vs S group) and appeared to have the same effect in diabetic mice with or without drug treatment. Splenocyte proliferation induced by concanavalin A(0.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) also showed similar results, although there were not statistically significant. Concentration of interleukin-2(IL-2) released from splenocytes of the S group seemed higher than from the C group, but the IL-2 concentrations were not different among six diabetic groups. Results of fatty acid compositions of splenocyte phospholipids showed that diabetes reduced arachidonic acid/linoleic acid ratios and that sea tangle intake and glipizide treatments increased contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is concluded that dietary sea tangle has a positive effect on splenocyte proliferation under normal condition and could have the same effect under diabetic conditions. IL-2 appears to be one of factors mediating the effect but involvement of membrane fatty arid changes and other unknown factors needs lurker Investigation. (Korean J Nutrition 31(6) : 973-980, 1998)
