  • This paper proposes a vehicle trajectory prediction method for application to vehicle-to-vehicle distance control. This method is based on 2-dimensional kinematics and a Kalman filter has been used to estimate acceleration of the object vehicle. The simulation results using the proposed control method show that the relative distance characteristics can be improved via the trajectory prediction method compared to the customary vehicle stop and go cruise control systems which makes the vehicle remain at a safe distance from a preceding vehicle according to the driver's preference, automatically slow down and come to a full stop behind a preceding vehicle.

  • A region-based video codec based on the H.263+ standard is examined and its associated novel rate control scheme is proposed in this work. The region-based coding scheme is a hybrid method that consists of the traditional block DCT coding and the object-based coding. Basically, we adopt H.263+ as the platform, and develop a fast macroblock-based segmentation method to implement the region-based video codec. The proposed rate control solution includes rate control in three levels: encoding frame selection, frame-layer rate control and macroblock-layer rate control. The goal is to enhance the visual quality of decoded frames at low bit rates. The efficiency of proposed rate control scheme applied to the region-based video codes is demonstrated via several typical test sequences.

  • A nonlinear gas-spring tuned mass damper is proposed to mitigate the seismic responses of the multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structure, in which the nine-story benchmark model is selected as the controlled object. The nonlinear mechanical properties of the gas-spring are investigated through theoretical analysis and experiments, and the damper's control parameters are designed. The control performance and damping mechanism of the proposed damper attached to the MDOF structure are systematically studied, and its reliability is also explored by parameter sensitivity analysis. The results illustrate that the nonlinear gas-spring TMD can transfer the primary structure's vibration energy from the lower to the higher modes, and consume energy through its own relative movement. The proposed damper has excellent "Reconciling Control Performance", which not only has a comparable control effect as the linear TMD, but also has certain advantages in working stroke. Furthermore, the control parameters of the gas-spring TMD can be determined according to the external excitation amplitude and the gas-spring's initial volume.

  • In this study, we designed and manufactured an intelligent gripper-control device to safely grip unknown objects. The gripper control device consists of a DSP circuit, power supply circuit, communication circuit, and amplifier circuit diagrams. The DSP is used because the values of the 3-axis force sensor to which the gripper is attached are measured and calculated at high speeds. The gripping force is determined based on this value, and the object must be safely gripped with the determined value. A basic characteristic test of the control device of the manufactured intelligent gripper was conducted, and it was confirmed that it operated safely.

  • A combined optimal design problem of structural and control systems is discussed by taking a 3-D flexible structure as an object. We consider a minimum weight design problem for structural system and disturbance suppression problem for the control system. The conditions for the existence of controller are expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). By minimizing the linear sum of the normalized structural objective function and control objective function, it is possible to make optimal design by which the balance of the structural weight and the control performance is taken. We showed in this paper the validity of combined optimal design of structural and control systems.

  • A Mobile manipulator - a serial connection of a mobile robot and a task robot - is a very useful system to achieve various tasks in dangerous environment. because it has the higher performance than a fixed base manipulator in regard to the size of it's operational workspace. Unfortunately the use of a mobile robot introduces non-holonomic constraints, and the combination of a mobile robot and a manipulator generally introduces kinematic redundancy. In this paper, first a method for estimating the position of object at the cartesian coordinate system acquired by using the geometrical relationship between the image captured by 2-DOF active camera mounted on mobile robot and real object is proposed. Second, we propose a method to determine a optimal path between current the position of mobile manipulator whose mobile robot is non-holonomic and the position of object estimated by image information through the global displacement of the system in a symbolic way, using homogenous matrices. Then, we compute the corresponding joint parameters to make the desired displacement coincide with the computed symbolic displacement and object is captured through the control of a manipulator. The effectiveness of proposed method is demonstrated by the simulation and real experiment using the mobile manipulator.

  • In this paper, we propose an AR(augmented reality) system using user's bare hand based on computer vision. It is important for registering a virtual object on the real input image to detect and track correct feature points. The AR systems with markers are stable but they can not register the virtual object on an acquired image when the marker goes out of a range of the camera. There is a tendency to give users inconvenient environment which is limited to control a virtual object. On the other hand, our system detects fingertips as fiducial features using adaptive ellipse fitting method considering the geometric characteristics of hand. It registers the virtual object stably by getting movement of fingertips with determining the shortest distance from a palm center. We verified that the accuracy of fingertip detection over 82.0% and fingertip ordering and tracking have just 1.8% and 2.0% errors for each step. We proved that this system can replace the marker system by tacking a camera projection matrix effectively in the view of stable augmentation of virtual object.

  • Recently, it is essential to have the system which can track down and identity the random object in the space in which security is a high priority. Due to the fact that we mentioned above, in this paper. We suggest the intelligent video surveillance system effective image-process-education in this paper. The experiment was conducted to check and track down the entering vehicle. And, Pan-Tilt-Zoom camera was used to obtain the enlarged image of the object while a vehicle was making stop in target area. As a result, the experiment has shown the data as following. When the object is in motion, success rate is 97.4%, while success rate is 91% when the object is motionless. By using the suggested system, effective image-process-education is should be achieved because the students who participate in the class can have simultaneous access to the system for real time image data and camera control.

  • The conventional object tracking techniques using PTZ camera detects object movements by analyzing acquired image. However, this technique requires expensive hardware devices to perform a complex image processing. And it is occasionally hard to detect object movements, if an acquired image is low quality or image acquisition is impossible. In this paper, we proposes a smart security CCTV system applying to wireless sensor network technique based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard to overcome the problems of conventional object tracking technique, which enables to track suspicious objects by detecting object movements and GPS data in sensor node. This system enables an efficient control of PTZ camera to observe a wide area, decreasing image processing complexity. Also, wireless sensor network is implemented using mesh networks to increase the efficiency of installing sensor node.

  • A script language, which represents and controls avatar behaviors in a natural language style, is especially remarkable, because it can provide a fast and easy way to develop an animation scenario script. However, the studies that consider avatar behavior interactions with various virtual objects and intuitive interface techniques to design scenario script have been lack. Therefore, we proposed a context-based avatar-object behavior model and layered script language. The model defines context-based elements to solve ambiguity problems that occur in abstract behavior interface and it provides user interface to control avatar in the object-based approach. Also, the proposed avatar behavior script language consisted of a layered structure that represents domain user interface, motion sequence, and implement environment information at each level. Using the proposed methods, the user can conveniently and quickly design an avatar-object behavior scenario script.
