  • In this paper, contour plot is considered as a method to explore the structure of categorical data. For this purpose, the paper suggests a method to sort two-way contingency table with respect to the expected marginals. It is found that the suggested plot provides us with valuable information for the underlying data structure. Firstly, we can investigate independency between the categories by examining the differences of expected frequency contours and observed frequency contours. With the plot, we can also visually investigate the existence of outliers inherent in the data. These properties of the suggested contour plot will be demonstrated by several sets of real data.

  • Error surfaces provide us with very important information for training of feed-forward neural networks (FNNs). In this paper, we draw the contour plots of various error or objective functions for training of FNNs. Firstly, when applying FNNs to classifications, the weakness of mean-squared error is explained with the viewpoint of error contour plot. And the classification figure of merit, mean log-square error, cross-entropy error, and n-th order extension of cross-entropy error objective functions are considered for the contour plots. Also, the recently proposed target node method is explained with the viewpoint of contour plot. Based on the contour plots, we can explain characteristics of various error or objective functions when training of FNNs proceeds.

  • The contour method which was originally designed for $2{\times}2{\times}2$ contingency table is studied for $2{\times}2{\times}K$ and $2{\times}3{\times}K$ tables. Whereas a contour plot for a $2{\times}2{\times}K$ table is represented on unit squared two dimensional plane, a contour plot of a $2{\times}3{\times}K$ table can be expressed with a regular hexahedron on three dimensional space. Based on contour plots for categorical data fitted to all possible three dimensional log-linear models, one might identify whether $2{\times}2{\times}k$ or $2{\times}3{\times}K$ tables are collapsible over the third variable.

  • In this study, a new concept in a paddy consolidation project is introduced in that curved parallel terracing with contour-lined layout is adopted in sloping areas instead of conventional rectangular terracing. The contoured layout reduces earth-moving considerably compared to rectangular methods in consolidation projects. The objective of the paper is to develop a combinatorial optimization model using the network theory for the design of contour-lined plots which minimizes the volume of earth moving. The results showed that as the length of short side of plot is longer or the land slope is steeper, the volume of earth moving for land leveling increases. The developed optimization model is applied for three consolidated districts and the resulting optimal earth moving is compared with the volume of earth from the conventional method. The shorter is the minimum length of short side of a polt with increases the number of plots, the less is the volume of earth. As the minimum length of short side is 20 m for efficient field works by farm machinery, the volume of earth moving of optimal plot is less by 21.0∼27.1 % than that of the conventional consolidated plots.

  • We described a method resonant mode identification in dielectric-disc loaded cylindrical cavity resonators. The characteristic equation is solved by using the ContourPlot graph of Mathematica. Contour graph method uses graphical method. It is comparable with numerical method. The numerical method is very difficult a mode identification. The analysis based on the approximated electromagnetic representation. This kinds of studies only concentrated on the calculation of resonant frequencies, and a mode identification of resonant frequencies have not been covered. But, the contour graph method to analyze the characteristic equations is simple and all parts of resonant frequency graph can be easily drawn, it is possible to calculate precise resonant frequencies and to identify the mode of resonant frequencies.

  • In designing the high frequency oscillator with FET, it may be necessary to make the FFT unstable using feedback. For convenient realization, sir feedback type is usually employed. It is convenient to determine the load which makes oscillation possible, with the contour plot of the negative resistance of the FET positively feedback for each type. Analytic formulas are given for this contour plot in this paper, and the results are discussed.

  • For categorical data analysis, the collapsibility were explained with the odds ratio (cross-product ratio). When these theories with these odds ratios are applied to real $2{\times}2{\times}K$ contingency tables, it is impossible to decide whether data are collapsible. Among graphical methods to represent odds ratios, Contour plot which is developed by Doi, Nakamura and Yamamoto (2001) could explain the structure of these data, but cannot decide on the collapsibility. In this paper, by using the Raindrop plot proposed by Barrowman and Myers (2003), we suggest an alternative method which can not only explain the structure of data, but also decide on the collapsibility.

  • We described a method resonant mode identification in dielectric-rod loaded cylindrical cavity resonators. Resonant frequency of dielectric loaded cavity is calculated by analyzing the characteristic equation. The characteristic equation is solved by using the ContourPlot graph of Mathematica. As the result of comparing calculation value and experimental value of resonant frequencies, we know that the field representation of non-decaying mode is exact. The contour graph method is not a method using approximated representation of electromagnetic field variation at the outer area of dielectric in the resonators but a method using exact representation.

  • A field study was conducted to determine the runoff loss of N and P in small scale of red pepper field plots (10% slope), consisting of three different plots with black polyethylene vinyl mulching (mulching), ridge without mulching (ridge), and flat without ridge and mulching (flat). Composted manure and urea as a basal application were applied at rates of $20MT\;ha^{-1}$ and $93kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Urea at $189kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ and fused phosphate at $67kg\;P_2O_5\;ha^{-1}$ were additionally applied on June 25 with different fertilization methods, broadcast application in flat plot and hole injection in ridge and mulching plots. Plant uptake of N and P was positively correlated with their respective concentrations in surface soil: mulching > ridge > flat plots. The runoff loss by soil erosion was higher in flat plot than ridge and mulching plot with contour line. Nitrate loss by the runoff water had no significant differences among three surface management practices, but the higher average value in ridge and mulching plots than flat plot. Especially, the flat plot had no phosphate loss during summer season. This is probably due to low labile P content in surface soil of flat plot. In the summation of soil and water loss, flat plot was higher in N and P loss than ridge and mulching plot with contour line. Nevertheless, the nitrate and phosphate loss by runoff water could be more important for non-point source management because the water could meet the river easier than eroded soil because of re-deposition around slope land.
