In nanosized structures as the surface area to the bulk volume ratio increases the classical continuum mechanics approaches fails to investigate the mechanical behavior of such structures. In perforated nanobeam structures, more decrease in the bulk volume is obtained due to perforation process thus nonclassical continuum approaches should be employed for reliable investigation of the mechanical behavior these structures. This article introduces an analytical methodology to investigate the size dependent, surface energy, and perforation impacts on the nonclassical bending behavior of regularly squared cutout nanobeam structures for the first time. To do this, geometrical model for both bulk and surface characteristics is developed for regularly squared perforated nanobeams. Based on the proposed geometrical model, the nonclassical Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity model is adopted and modified to incorporate the surface energy effects in perforated nanobeams. To investigate the effect of shear deformation associated with cutout process, both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams theories are developed. Mathematical model for perforated nanobeam structure including surface energy effects are derived in comprehensive procedure and nonclassical boundary conditions are presented. Closed forms for the nonclassical bending and rotational displacements are derived for both theories considering all classical and nonclassical kinematics and kinetics boundary conditions. Additionally, both uniformly distributed and concentrated loads are considered. The developed methodology is verified and compared with the available results and an excellent agreement is noticed. Both classical and nonclassical bending profiles for both thin and thick perforated nanobeams are investigated. Numerical results are obtained to illustrate effects of beam filling ratio, the number of hole rows through the cross section, surface material characteristics, beam slenderness ratio as well as the boundary and loading conditions on the non-classical bending behavior of perforated nanobeams in the presence of surface effects. It is found that, the surface residual stress has more significant effect on the bending deflection compared with the corresponding effect of the surface elasticity, Es. The obtained results are supportive for the design, analysis and manufacturing of perforated nanobeams.

A simple numerical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the shear stress distribution in beams of framed tube structures with multiple internal tubes. The structures arc analysed using a continuum approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a tube beam that accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. The numerical analysis of shear stress is based on the mathematical analogy in conjunction with the elastic theory By simplifying assumptions regarding the form of strain distributions in external and internal tubes, the shear stress distributions are expressed in terms of a series of lineal functions of the second moments of area of the structures and the corresponding geometric and material properties, as well as the applied loads. Previous studies for axial stresses and shear lag phenomenon are further developed lot the numerical analysis of shear stresses in the tubes. The simplicity and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through the solutions of throe numerical examples.

In this paper, we develop continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) methods using both direct differential method (DDM) and adjoint variable method (AVM) for non-shape design problems. The developed DSA method is further utilized for the topology design optimization of 3-dimensional structures. In numerical examples, the analytical DSA results are verified using finite difference ones. The topology optimization method yields very reasonable results in physical point of view.
This paper develops a 3D homogenization based continuum damage mechanics (HCDM) model for fiber reinforced composites undergoing micromechanical damage under monotonic and cyclic loading. Micromechanical damage in a representative volume element (RVE) of the material occurs by fiber-matrix interfacial debonding, which is incorporated in the model through a hysteretic bilinear cohesive zone model. The proposed model expresses a damage evolution surface in the strain space in the principal damage coordinate system or PDCS. PDCS enables the model to account for the effect of non-proportional load history. The loading/unloading criterion during cyclic loading is based on the scalar product of the strain increment and the normal to the damage surface in strain space. The material constitutive law involves a fourth order orthotropic tensor with stiffness characterized as a macroscopic internal variable. Three dimensional damage in composites is accounted for through functional forms of the fourth order damage tensor in terms of components of macroscopic strain and elastic stiffness tensors. The HCDM model parameters are calibrated from homogenization of micromechanical solutions of the RVE for a few representative strain histories. The proposed model is validated by comparing results of the HCDM model with pure micromechanical analysis results followed by homogenization. Finally, the potential of HCDM model as a design tool is demonstrated through macro-micro analysis of monotonic and cyclic damage progression in composite structures.
Once assessment of material failure characteristics is captured precisely in a unified way, it can bedirectly incorporated into the structural failure assessment under various loading environments, based on the theoretical backgrounds so called Local Approach to Fracture. The aim of this study is to develop a numerical fatigue test method by continuum damage mechanics applicable for the assessment of structural integrity throughout crack initiation and structural failure based on the Local Approach to Fracture. The generalized elasto-visco-plastic constitutive equation, which can consider the internal damage evolution behavior, is developed and employed in the 3-D FEA code in order to numerically evaluate the material and/or structural responses. Explicit information of the relationships between the mechanical properties and material constants, which are required for the mechanical constitutive and damage evolution equations for each material, are implemented in numerical fatigue test method. The material constants selected from constitutive equations are used directly in the failure assessment of material and/or structures. The performance of the developed system has been evaluated with assessing the S-N diagram of stainless steel materials.

The stable conformers of glycine and the inter-conversions between them were studied theoretically at various levels of theory, B3LYP, MP2, CCSD and CCSD(T), in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. In aqueous solution, the structures examined by use of the conductor-like polarizable continuum model (CPCM) with various cavity models, UA0, UAHF, UAKS, UFF, BONDI and PAULING, and by use of a discrete/continuum solvation model with eight water clusters. The Gibbs free energy differences between the neutral (NE) and zwitterionic conformers (ZW), ${\Delta}G_{Z-N}[=G_{ZW}-G_{NE}]$, in aqueous solution were well reproduced by using the BONDI and PAULING cavity models. However the ${\Delta}G_{Z-N}$ values were underestimated in other cavity models, although the ZW conformers existed as stable species in aqueous solution. In the studies of a discrete/continuum solvation model with eight water clusters, gas phase results are still insufficient to reproduce the experimental findings. However the ${\Delta}G_{Z-N}$ values calculated by use of CPCM method in aqueous solution agreed well with the experimental ones.
A series of molecular dynamic (MD), finite element (FE) and ab initio simulations are carried out to establish suitable modeling schemes for the continuum-based analysis of aluminum matrix nanocomposites reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). From a comparison of the MD with FE models and inferences based on bond structures and electron distributions, we propose that the effective thickness of a CNT wall for its continuum representation should be related to the graphitic inter-planar spacing of 3.4${\AA}$. We also show that shell element representation of a CNT structure in the FE models properly simulated the carbon-carbon covalent bonding and long-range interactions in terms of the load-displacement behaviors. Estimation of the effective interfacial elastic properties by ab initio simulations showed that the in-plane interfacial bond strength is negligibly weaker than the normal counterpart due to the nature of the weak secondary bonding at the CNT-Al interface. Therefore, we suggest that a third-phase solid element representation of the CNT-Al interface in nanocomposites is not physically meaningful and that spring or bar element representation of the weak interfacial bonding would be more appropriate as in the cases of polymer matrix counterparts. The possibility of treating the interface as a simply contacted phase boundary is also discussed.
In this paper, a comprehensive review of nanostructures that exhibit piezoelectric behavior on all mechanical, buckling, vibrational, thermal and electrical properties is presented. It is firstly explained vast application of materials with their piezoelectric property and also introduction of other properties. Initially, more application of material which have piezoelectric property is introduced. Zinc oxide (ZnO), boron nitride (BN) and gallium nitride (GaN) respectively, are more application of piezoelectric materials. The nonlocal elasticity theory and piezoelectric constitutive relations are demonstrated to evaluate problems and analyses. Three different approaches consisting of atomistic modeling, continuum modeling and nano-scale continuum modeling in the investigation atomistic simulation of piezoelectric nanostructures are explained. Focusing on piezoelectric behavior, investigation of analyses is performed on fields of surface and small scale effects, buckling, vibration and wave propagation. Different investigations are available in literature focusing on the synthesis, applications and mechanical behaviors of piezoelectric nanostructures. In the study of vibration behavior, researches are studied on fields of linear and nonlinear, longitudinal and transverse, free and forced vibrations. This paper is intended to provide an introduction of the development of the piezoelectric nanostructures. The key issue is a very good understanding of mechanical and electrical behaviors and characteristics of piezoelectric structures to employ in electromechanical systems.
A theoretical energy-based model to capture the mechanical response of thick woven composite laminates, which are used in such applications as maritime or aerospace, to high-velocity impact was developed. The dependences of the impact phenomenon on material and geometrical parameters were analysed making use of the Vaschy-Buckingham Theorem to provide a non-dimensional framework. The model was divided in three different stages splitting the physical interpretation of the perforation process: a first where different dissipative mechanisms such as compression or shear plugging were considered, a second where a transference of linear momentum was assumed and a third where only friction took place. The model was validated against experimental data along with a 3D finite element model. The numerical simulations were used to validate some of the new hypotheses assumed in the theoretical model to provide a more accurate explanation of the phenomena taking place during a high-velocity impact.
