An electro-hydraulic controlled rig type CVT(Continuously Variable Transmission) system was developed and its performance tests were carried out for the optimal operation. A CVT map was suggested based on the speed ration-axial force-torque relationship which was derived from the metal belt CVT mechanics. Also, a real time control and operation software was developed for the electro-hydraulic CVT system. By using the software and the CVT map, the control system was designed for the CVT speed ratio control with various drive modes. The electro-hydraulic CVT system developed in this study showed that the optimal operation algorithm could be obtained for the best fuel economy or the maximum power mode.
This article describes the design of a hydraulic system for a power split type continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT considered here, is composed of planetary gears, clutches, and a torque converter which is mainly used for the realization of CVT function. Similar to automatic transmissions, the hydraulic system of CVT is designed for supplying hydraulic flows and pressures to each component of CVT, in order to activate the clutch engagements and torque converter operation, and to cool the drivetrain. By using the mathematical models of drivetrain, a simulation program was developed to investigate the power performance of CVT equipped vehicle and the operating conditions of each component of CVT. And the design parameters of the hydraulic system and clutches were calculated using the operating conditions and power requirements which obtained from the simulation results. Finally the hydraulic circuit design of prototyped valve body is presented based on the numerical results of this analysis.
Most of tractors in the world have manual gear transmission, and some of small tractors have hydrostatic trans-mission(HST). Since the HST is expensive and has low power efficiency, it is being used for only small garden tractors. The continuously variable transmission(CVT) is an alternative to the HST or power-shift gear transmissions. The driver of the CVT tractor doesn't have to operate a shift lever since the CVT controller automatically controls the speed of tractor. Thus, it is much easier to operate the CVT tractor. For the easy and stable control of the CVT tractor, an appropriate control algorithm should be developed and the dynamic modeling should be carried out before making the prototype of CVT controller. This study was conducted to develop a simulation model of the CVT control system needed to develop a PID control algorithm. The simulation model consisted of variator dynamics, hydraulic system and control computer. And the simulation model was verified by experiment. The results obtained in this study can be utilized in the design of CVT tractors for practical use, but a lot of field tests and improvement of softwares would be necessary.
Compared with classical linear controllers, a nonlinear controller can result in better control performance for the nonlinear uncertainties of continuously variable transmission (CVT) systems that are driven by a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM). Improved control performance can be seen in the nonlinear uncertainties behavior of CVT systems by using the proposed mingled revised recurrent Hermite polynomial neural network (MRRHPNN) control with mend ant colony optimization (ACO). The MRRHPNN control with mend ACO can carry out the overlooker control system, reformed recurrent Hermite polynomial neural network (RRHPNN) control with an adaptive law, and reimbursed control with an appraised law. Additionally, in accordance with the Lyapunov stability theorem, the adaptive law in the RRHPNN and the appraised law of the reimbursed control are established. Furthermore, to help improve convergence and to obtain better learning performance, the mend ACO is utilized for adjusting the two varied learning rates of the two parameters in the RRHPNN. Finally, comparative examples are illustrated by experimental results to confirm that the proposed control system can achieve better control performance.

Automobile manufacturers in each country are spurring the development of electric vehicles that use electric energy, an eco-friendly energy, as a futuristic vehicle. Electric vehicles have the advantage of no harmful gas or environmental pollution and low noise. Unlike automobiles using existing internal combustion engines using fossil fuels, electric vehicles use the electricity of batteries to cause rotational motion of motors. In the electric vehicle driven by the motor, it is indispensable to develop a controller for controlling the motor. One of the areas where automobile manufacturers are concentrating is the development of small electric vehicles as a personal transportation means. Small electric vehicles such as electric motorcycles, one-seat electric vehicles and two-seat electric vehicles are expanding the market as a means of operating throughout the city. In the domestic road conditions with many hills, it is effective to have a separate transmission system for small electric vehicles to drive smoothly. In this study, we propose a new type of continuously variable transmission(CVT) system to ensure that small electric vehicles can be driven smoothly in hilly domestic terrain. The proposed CVT system is equipped with a basic disk and a rotational disk in the driving pulley and the driven pulley, respectively, and is applied with a sloping spline to rotate the rotational disk. To commercialize the proposed CVT system, an experimental device was developed to examine the power transmission efficiency and the configuration of the CVT system was proposed.
This parer presents a CVT line pressure control strategy for the increased shift speed. Firstly, an algorithm to increase the CVT shift speed is suggested based on a modified CVT shift dynamics and shift speed maps are constructed. In addition, simplified dynamic models of the line pressure and the ratio control valve are derived by considering the CVT shift dynamics, and low level control algorithms for the ratio and the line pressure control are proposed. Using the shift speed maps and the simplified dynamic models of the CVT system, shift performance is investigated. It is found from the experimental and simulation results that improved shift speed can be achieved by increasing the lilly pressure.

The Center for Transportation Research at the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) supports the DOE by evaluating advanced automotive technologies in a systems context. ha has developed a unique set of compatible simulation tools and test equipment to perform an integrated systems analysis project from modeling through hardware testing and validation. This project utilized these capabilities to demonstrate the trade-off in fuel economy and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions in a so-called ‘pre-transmission’ parallel hybrid powertrain. The powertrain configuration (in simulation and on the dynamometer) consists of a Compression Ignition Direct Ignition (CIDI) engine, a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and an electric drive motor coupled to the CVT input shaft. The trade-off is studied in a simulated environment using PSAT with different controllers (fuzzy logic and rule based) and engine models (neural network and steady state models developed from ANL data).
Continuously variable transmission (CVT) mechanisms considered here are input coupled types that combine the functions of a 2K-H II type differential gear and a V-belt type continuously variable unit (CVU). For the 8 different mechanisms, 4 of them are power-circulation modes while the other 4 are power-split modes, various performance analysis (speed ratios, power flows, divisions of power transmission in a differential gear and a CVU, and theoretical efficiencies) are performed to vary design parameters. Experimental studies are executed to validate fundamental relations (speed ratios, power flows, efficiencies, occurrence of geared neutral). Some useful characteristics associated with performance also are discussed in the mechanisms.
A high level CVT ratio control algorithm is proposed to improve the engine performance by considering the powertrain response lag. In this algorithm, the desired CVT speed ratio is modified from the vehicle velocity, which is estimated after the time delay due to the powertrain response lag. In addition, the acceleration map is constructed to estimate the vehicle acceleration from the throttle pedal position and the CVT ratio. Using the CVT ratio control algorithm and the acceleration map, vehicle performance simulations are performed to evaluate the engine performance and fuel economy. It is found that the fuel economy can be improved about 3.6% for FUDS by the ratio control algorithm for the target vehicle. In selecting the appropriate time delay, compromise between the fuel economy and the acceleration performance is required.
In this study new CVT(Continuously Variable Transmission) system which is adaptable to a small size electric vehicle is proposed available to gradient response CVT. New pulleys consist of springs adapted driving pulley and driven pulley. At the moment a small electric vehicle drive a slope, new system respond to a gradient as overcoming tensional force of springs. We made prototype of gradient response CVT to test parts performance and travelling performance test. As a result of test, belt pitch diameter varied for high torque direction at the gradient. In the flat travelling, acceleration travelling and gradient travelling performance test, the small electric vehicle with gradient response CVT get improved perfomance than the small electric vehicle with reduction gear.
