We report a finding of fast(exceeding 2,000 K/s) heating of polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS), one of the most commonly-used microchannel materials, under cyclic loadings at high(~MHz) frequencies. A microheater was created based on the finding. The heating mechanism utilized vibration damping of sound waves, which were generated and precisely manipulated using a conventional surface acoustic wave(SAW) microfluidic system, in PDMS. The penetration depths were measured to range from $210{\mu}m$ to $1290{\mu}m$, enough to cover most microchannel heights in microfluidic systems. The energy conversion efficiency was SAW frequency-dependent and measured to be the highest at around 30 MHz. Independent actuation of each interdigital transducer(IDT) enabled independent manipulation of SAWs, permitting spatiotemporal control of temperature on the microchip. All the advantages of this microheater facilitated a two-step continuous flow polymerase chain reaction(CFPCR) to achieve the billion-fold amplification of a 134 bp DNA amplicon in less than 3 min. In addition, a technique was developed for establishing dynamic free-form temperature gradients(TGs) in PDMS as well as in gases in contact with the PDMS.
Recombinant exoinulinase was partially purified form the culture supernatant of S.cerevisiae by(NH4)2SO4 precipitation and PEG treatment. The purfied inulinase was immobilized onto Amino-cellulofine with glutaraldeyde as a cross-linking agent. Immobilization yield based on the enzyme activity was about 15%. Optimal pH and temperature of immobilized enzyme were found to be 5.0 and 6$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme activity was stably maintained in the pH ranges of 4.5 to 6.0 at 6$0^{\circ}C$. 100% of enzyme activity was observed even after incubation for 24 hr at 6$0^{\circ}C$. In the operation of a packed-bed reactor containing 412U inulinase, dahalia inulin of 7.5%(w/w) concentration was completely hydrolyzed at flow rate of 2.0mL/min at 6$0^{\circ}C$, resulting in a volumetric productivity of 693 g-reducing sugars/L/h. Under the reaction conditions of 1.0mL/min flow rate with 2.5% inulin at 6$0^{\circ}C$, the reactor was successfully operated over 30 days without loss ofinulinase activity.
The deposition characteristics of diamond films were investigated for three different substrates : Si, Inconel 600 and steel. Diamond films were prepared by microwave plasma CVD method using $CH_4$, $H_2$ and $O_2$ as reaction gases. The deposited films were analyzed with SEM, Raman spectroscopy and ellipsometer. For Si substrate, diamond films were successfully obtained for most of the deposition conditions used in this study. As the $CH_4$ flow rate decreased and the $O_2$ flow rate increased, the quality of the film was improved due to the reduced non-diamond phase in the film. For Inconel 600 substrate, the surface pretreatment with diamond powders was required to deposit a continuous diamond film. The films deposited at temperatures of $600^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$ had mainly diamond phase, but they were peeled off locally due to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient between the substrate and the deposited films. The films deposited at $500^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ had only the graphitic carbon phase. For steel substrate, all of the films deposited had only the graphitie carbon phase. We speculated that the formation of diamond nuclei on the steel substrate was inhibited due to the diffusion of carbon atoms into the steel substrate which has a large amount of carbon solubility.
An experimental study on the preparation of monolithic porous polymers by environmentally friend process in supercritical carbon dioxide has been carried out. Polymerization mixture composed of a cross-linking monomer, initiator and functional co-polymer was charged in the reactor with sapphire window. After the system was purged with a flow of $CO_2$ for 15 min, the reactor was pressurized with liquid $CO_2$ up to 100 bars. The reactor was isolated from and placed back to the system via quick connector for shaking until the mixture had become fully homogeneous. The reactor was then heated and pressurized to the required reaction conditions and left overnight. After cooling and $CO_2$ evacuation, the polymer was removed from the reactor as dry, white, continuous monoliths. The effect of experimental conditions on the physical properties of porous polymer was systematically examined, and it was found that monomer content had a major effect on the physical properties of the polymers.
A preparation method of cobalt supported alumina catalyst for a emergency escape mask cartridge has been studied. Catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method using pre-shaped $\gamma$=alumina powders of 70-100 mesh. The catalyst was tested in a continuous-flow reactor system and characterized by elemental analysis, BET and TGA-DTA techniques. Cobalt shows higher activity than platinum or nickel for carbon monoxide oxidation at room temperature. Optimum loading amount of cobalt was 10 wt.% for CO oxidation and the reaction activity increases gradually with the increase of calcination temperature up to $450^{\circ}C.
Under high temperature and high pressure, cyanogen disinter gration distruction mechanism brought followings results through continuous plug flow reactor system. 1. The temperature was a important reacting factor in cyanogen disintegration. Over $612.8^{\cird}K$ high disintegration rate or 99.99% was shown even under $2000{\;}mg/{\ell}$ cyanogen density. 2. The conditions of cyanogen disintegration was gained through experimenting the supercrietical condition of water in basic. To gain 99.99% disintegration rate under $1000{\;}mg/{\ell}$ early cyanogen density, the pressure showed 52.8 seconds at $523^{\cird}K$ and 84.2 atm and gained $0.56{\;}mg/{\ell}$ operating density. 3. Here is the reaction velocity formula of cyanogen disintegration by hydrolysis: This formula indicates the high possibility of cyanogen disintegration within a short time. And it also implys the potential possibility on treating NBDICOD and the technology in developing the environment cleaning progress as small size automatic controlling equipment.
Copper nanoparticle-doped and graphitic carbon nanofibers-covered porous carbon beads were used as an efficient catalyst for treating synthetic phenolic water by catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) in a packed bed reactor over 10-30 bar and $180-230^{\circ}C$, with air and water flowing co-currently. A mathematical model based on reaction kinetics assuming degradation in both heterogeneous and homogeneous phases was developed to predict reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) under a continuous operation with recycle. The catalyst and process also showed complete COD reduction (>99%) without leaching of Cu against a high COD (~120,000 mg/L) containing industrial wastewater.
Since late of 2000, KIER has developed a novel pyrolysis process for production of fuel oils from polymer wastes. It could have been possible due to large-scale funding of the Resource Recycling R&D Center. The target was to develop an uncatalyzed, continuous and automatic process producing oils that can be used as a fuel for small-scale industrial boilers. The process development has proceeded in three stages bench-scale unit, pilot plant and demonstration plant. As a result, the demonstration plant having capacity of 3,000 tons/year has been constructed and is currently under test operation for optimization of operation conditions. The process consisted of four parts ; feeding system, cracking reactor, refining system and others. Raw materials were pretreated via shredding and classifying to remove minerals, water, etc. There were 3 kind of products, oils(80%), gas(15%), carbonic residue(5%). The main products i.e. oils were gasoline and diesel. The calorific value of gas has been found to be about 18,000kcal/$m^3$ which is similar to petroleum gas and shows that it could be used as a process fuel. Key technologies adopted in the process are 1) Recirculation of feed for rapid melting and enhancement of fluidity for automatic control of system, 2) Tubular reactor specially-designed for heavy heat flux and prevention of coking, 3)Recirculation of heavy fraction for prevention of wax formation, and 4) continuous removal & re-reaction of sludge for high yield of main product (oil) and minimization of residue. The advantages of the process are full automation, continuous operation, no requirement of catalyst, minimization of coking and sludge problems, maximizing the product(fuel oil) yield and purity, low initial investment and operation costs and environment- friendly process. In this presentation, background of pyrolysis technology development, the details of KIER pyrolysis process flow, key technologies and the performances of the process will be discussed in detail.
