Recently drastic improvement of railway technology has been accompanied by the construction of very high-speed tracks. It should be noticed that Continuously Welded Rail(CWR) has played significant role in technical development of railway and that installation of CWR is now being scheduled on existing lines as well as newly-built lines. In general, interaction between CWR and bridge deck takes place on bridge section and additional axial force and displacement is to be developed owing to temperature and braking/acceleration forces. This interaction is known to be mainly governed by span organizations and arrangements of foot bearings. In common practice, movable bearing is stationed and designed on the assumption that it is not able to transfer the horizontal force of upper decks. However, it is well known that horizontal resistance is developed in movable bearings due to friction and that friction coefficient of movable bearing is ranged from 0.03 to 0.20 depending on the material of bearings and magnitude of reactions. Therefore, it is easily reasoned out that friction of movable bearing can influence the mutual behavior of CWR and bridge decks. Suggested in this study is to investigate the validity and efficiency of friction effect of movable bearings in controlling the axial force and displacement of CWR on continuous railway bridges.

Precast concrete deck has many advantages comparing with the in-situ concrete deck, and has been successfully applied to replacement of the deteriorated decks and to the newly constructed highway bridges in domestic region. In order to apply the precast decks into the railway bridges, however, differences of the load characteristics between the highway and the railway should be properly taken into account including the train load, longitudinal force of the continuous welded rail. acceleration or braking force, temperature change and shrinkage. Proper level of the longitudinal prestress of the tendons that can ensure integrity of the transverse joints in the deck system is of a primary importance. To this aim, the longitudinal tensile stresses induced by the design loads are derived using three-dimensional finite element analyses, design codes and theoretical equations for the frequently adopted PSC composite girder railway bridge. The estimated proper prestress level to counteract those tensile stresses is over 2.4 MPa, which is similar to the case of the highway bridges.
Since the 20th century, the business of railway was invaded by the invention of airplanes and vehicles in the field of the transportation of passenger and commercial products, however, in the 21st century, the fervent development of a high speed railway made possible the huge capacity of transporting passengers and commercial freight, so the railway industry is facing a new era of railway revolution. The 200 years old railway tradition includes the history of railway bridges built in areas of river, valley and metropolitan region and in that, the number of constructions of railway bridges that is composed of cable-stayed bridges is increasing as one of the most optimal bridges considering the quality of materials and the span of continuous-welded long rail. Thanks to the minimized effects of the fixed load on the stiffening girder section by delivering the fixed load which is applied to the pylon with the composition of elastic supporting points by using cables and the effective structural system that can throughly resist extra loads in addition to fixed load, the long-extended span of a bridge becomes possible. In this structural system, the load that is applied to the stiffening girder section forms a now pattern and in the process of these load delivery, there will be a necessity to examine the concentration of stress occurred in the cable-anchor system of the cable.

Installing Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) is one of the economical ways to resolve the challenges of noise, vibration, and the open-deck steel railway bridge impact, and the SSF method using the interlocking sleeper fastener has recently been developed. In this study, the method employed for determining the optimum vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad installed under the bridge sleeper, which is utilized to adjust the rail height and absorb shock when the train passes when the interlocking sleeper fastener is applied, is presented. To determine the optimal vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad, related existing design codes are reviewed, and, running safety, ride comfort, track safety, and bridge vibration according to the change in the vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad are estimated via flexible multi-body dynamic analysis,. The flexible multi-body dynamic analysis is performed using commercial programs ABAQUS and VI-Rail. The numerical analysis is conducted using the bridge model for a 30m-long plate girder bridge, and the response is calculated when passing ITX Saemaeul and KTX vehicles and freight wagon when the vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad is altered from 7.5 kN/mm to 240 kN/mm. The optimum stiffness of the sleeper pad is calculated as 200 kN/mm under the conditions of the track components applied to the numerical analysis.

The design of railroad bridges differs from road bridges because of the interface between track structure and bridge structure. The track generally consists of Continuous Welded Rail(CWR) which is fixed by fasteners to the sleepers embedded in the ballast. The ballast provides the interface between the track structure and the bridge structure. Large longitudinal forces can develop from the temperature variation in rail and bridge structure. These longitudinal forces are specially important for long bridges because the bridge layout for span length, pier dimensions and arrangement and type of bearings can be governed by these forces. This report provides a comparison of longitudinal track forces determined by analysis and actual measured track forces. In recent practice the longitudinal track force for European railways is analyzed using a finite element analysis method. This method is very time-consuming and requires the detail design of the bridge to be complete. Redesign is required if the design criteria for longitudinal track forces are not satisfied. There is a need to develop a simple analysis method considering the large number of bridge structures and a relatively short design time on the Korean High Speed Rail Project. The analysis results presented herein, based on a simplified analysis, show good agreement with those obtained by finite element analysis, as well as with those measured on an actual track. The proposed analysis method is particularly useful for the preliminary design of bridge structures.
