  • Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of force loading on root damage caused by contact with temporary anchorage devices (TADs) during orthodontic treatment and to examine the repair process 4, 8, and 12 weeks after TAD contact by micro-computed tomography (CT). Methods: We enrolled 42 volunteers who required bilateral upper first premolar extractions. The experimental study design was as follows. For both first premolars, cantilever springs were placed, and then TADs were immediately inserted between the premolars of all volunteers. According to the removal order of the appliances, the participants were divided into the TAD group (Group T: n = 21, only TAD removal) and the spring group (Group S: n = 21, only spring removal). A splitmouth design was adopted in both groups as follows. For each volunteer, the left premolars were extracted 4, 8, or 12 weeks after TAD-root contact. The right premolars were extracted immediately after contact in both groups (Groups T-C and S-C) and used as positive controls. Resorption volumes and numbers of craters were determined by micro-CT. Results: The numbers of resorption craters were higher in Group T than in Group S at 8 and 12 weeks (p < 0.01). Crater volumes were higher in Group T than in Group S at 4 and 12 weeks (p < 0.01, both). Conclusions: Root injury was not completely repaired 12 weeks after root-TAD contact, even when the TADs were removed in cases of continuous force application.

  • Problems due to the taste and odor in drinking water are common in treatment facilities around the world. Taste and odor are perceived by the public as the primary indicators of the safely and acceptability of drinking water, and are mainly caused by the presence of two semi-volatile compounds-2-methylisoborneol(2-MIB) and geosmin. Conventional treatment processes in water treatment plants, such as coagulation, sedimentation and chlorination have been found to be ineffective for the removal of 2-MIB and geosmin. Pulse UV system is a new UV irradiation system that is a non-mercury lamp-based alternative to currently used continuous wave systems for water disinfection. This study shows pulse UV system to be effective in treatment of these two compounds. Geosmin removal efficiency of UV process alone achieved approximately 70% at 10sec contact time. 2-MIB removal efficiency of UV only process achieved approximately 60% at 10sec contact time. The addition of $H_{2}O_{2}$ 7mg/L increased geosmin and 2-MIB removal efficiency upto approximately 94% and 91%, respectively.

  • In the present research, Ficus religiosa Bark (FRB) is used as an adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal Cr (VI) ions. This Ficus religiosa Bark was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, Fourier transform infrared Spectroscopy, Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer and the results showed that activated adsorbent have high adsorption capacity and withstand even in high temperature. Batch and Continuous experiments were conducted to determine the effect of various parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose and initial metal concentration. The biosorption followed pseudo first order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms of Cr (VI) on Ficus religiosa fitted well with the Temkin model. In Batch study, maximum biosorption capacity of Cr (VI) was found to be 37.97 mg g-1 (at optimal pH of 2, adsorbent dosage of 0.3 grams and concentration of Cr (VI) is100 mg L-1). The Continuous mode of study shows that 97% of Cr (VI) ion removal at a flow rate of 15 ml min-1. From the results, selected Ficus religiosa Bark has the higher adsorption capacity for the removal of Cr (VI) ions from wastewater.

  • This study is concerned with the graft polymerization of acrylamide onto the surfaces of polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate films treated with on corona discharge. In the case, peroxides formed by the corona discharge treatment are likely to be the species responsible for initiating the graft polymerization. This treatment produced a continuous charge in wettability and also amid group density on the polymer surface, as evidenced by water contact angle measurement, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflectance mode, and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. Both of the merely corona-treated film and the subsequently grafted film are discussed as a function of time after treatment and water washings.

  • The plasma, ionized gas state, is generally composed as the 4th state in the universe. Generating the plasma artificially has been studied by spending energy and it has been applied so much in human's life. There are several merits to modify the surface of polymer using plasma. Above all, plasma maintains the properties of polymer itself, but changes the properly of polymer surface only. Also, it is the environmentally fraternized because there are no waste processing from organic solvent. Furthermore, it is possible that continuous automated-processing in case of high-pressure plasma. Therefore, we have tried the reforming of surface to rise the adhesive strength between the material of polymer, and have experimented rising the adhesive strength through peel strength by virtue of processing time and using gas, of course, confirmed the change of polymer surface through measuring the contact angle analysis and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).

  • Excessive phosphorus in aquatic systems causes algal bloom resulting in eutrophication, DO depletion, decline in recreational value of water and foul tastes. To treat wastewater containing phosphorus including effluent of wastewater treatment plant, the continuous experiments were performed by using electrochemical way. The spherical ZVI and silica sand which act as physical filter are packed at appropriate volume ratio of 1:2. Electric potential is applied externally which can be changed as per the operational requirement. The results indicate that optimum hydraulic retention time of 36 minutes (10 mL/min at 1 L reactor) was required to meet the effluent standards. Lower concentrations of phosphorus (<10 mg/L as phosphate) were removed by precipitation by contact with iron. Thus, additional electric potential was not required. In order to remove high concentration phosphorus around 150 mg/L as phosphate, external electric potential of 600 V was applied to the reactor.

  • Blood pressure is one of the key physiological parameters for determining human health, and can prove whether human cardiovascular function is healthy or not. In general, what we call blood pressure refers to arterial blood pressure. Blood pressure fluctuates greatly and, due to the influence of various factors, even varies with each heartbeat. Therefore, achievement of continuous blood pressure measurement is particularly important for more accurate diagnosis. It is difficult to achieve long-term continuous blood pressure monitoring with traditional measurement methods due to the continuous wear of measuring instruments. On the other hand, radar technology is not easily affected by environmental factors and is capable of strong penetration. In this study, by using machine learning, tried to develop a linear blood pressure prediction model using data from a public database. The radar sensor evaluates the measured object, obtains the pulse waveform data, calculates the pulse transmission time, and obtains the blood pressure data through linear model regression analysis. Confirm its availability to facilitate follow-up research, such as integrating other sensors, collecting temperature, heartbeat, respiratory pulse and other data, and seeking medical treatment in time in case of abnormalities.

  • In this study, heat and discharge treatments are arbitrary simulated for finding out the initiations and processes of surface degradation on the surface of polymer for using as a PCB substrate. Thermal-treatment changed the surface to the hydrophobic one with the increase of contact angle and surface potential decay, respectively. The XPS spectrum showed that the increased hydrophobicity in thermal treatment was originated from the continuous decrease of side-chains caused by secessions of oxygen groups and the increase of unsaturated double bond in carbon chains. Also, thermal-treatment caused the discoloration on the point of treated surface. These phenomena were attributed to the generation of ether group. In the chemical change by discharge treatment, a lot of side-chains occurred on the treated surface, and so the hydrophilicity increased as time elapsed.

  • This study presents the optimal conditions of zero-valent iron (ZVI) pretreatment for color removal from real dye wastewater. Removal of color by ZVI was strongly subject to the acidity of the wastewater buffering the pH increased after ZVI reduction. The real dye wastewater did not contain a sufficient amount of acidity and thus it was necessary to supplement acid to the dye wastewater before treatment. In continuous operation of iron column, the empty bed contact time (EBCT) and initial pH were varied to find the optimal conditions. A non-linear regression model fitted well the experimental result predicting that the optimal EBCT and pH for 80% removal efficiency was present in the range of 57~90 and 5~5.9, respectively. Color of column effluents could be further removed in the following biological oxidation step and the biodegradability of wastewater was also enhanced after iron pretreatment.

  • The treatment of styrene vapor was carried out using the biofilter packed with loess/polyurethane composite during continuous operation of 74 days. The microorganisms were adapted within 2-3 days under the experimental conditions of inlet concentration and empty bed contact time (EBCT). At 200 sec of EBCT, the removal efficiency of styrene was 100\% with 200 ppmv of inlet concentration, while $92\%$ with 400 ppmv of inlet concentration. The biofilter showed the stable removal efficiencies of over $74\%$ under the EBCT range from 300 to 75 sec at the 150 ppmv of inlet styrene concentration. The maximum capacity of styrene removal for the biofilter packed with loess/polyurethane was $29g/m^3/hr$. During continuous operation of 74 days, pH of the drain water changed slightly and the pressure drop through the biofilter column was below $45\;mmH_2O/m$.
