  • This research is a part of a research program to verify the seismic performance of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to longitudinal steel connection details under cyclic lateral load. A total of 21 column specimens were constructed and tested. Main variables in this test program were longitudinal steel connection details(continuous, lap-spliced, and mechanically connected), confinement steel ratio, and axial force ratio, etc. The test results of the columns with different longitudinal steel connection details showed different failure mode, strength degradation, and seismic performance. From the quasi-static test, it was found that the columns with all longitudinal reinforcement lap-spliced showed significantly reduced ductility. However, seismic performance of the columns with half of longitudinal reinforcement lap-spliced showed limited ductility but much more ductile behaviour than the columns with all longitudinal reinforcement lap-spliced. It was also found that the seismic performance, failure mode and strength degradation of columns with mechanical connected longitudinal reinforcement were similar to those of columns with continuous longitudinal reinforcement.

  • In the w/o concentrated emulsion, the volume fraction of the dispersed is greater than 0.74 and the hydrophilic liquid is dispersed in the hydrophobic liquid of the continuous phase. The emulsion has the same appearance and behaviour as a gel. The polarity of the hydrophilic liquids and hydrophobic liquids, the pH and the ionic strength of the hydrophilic liquid are found to be important factors in the stability at the polymerization temperature such as $50^{\circ}C$. The lower the polarity of the hydrophobic liquid and the higher the polarity of the hydrophilic liquid, the more stable the emulsion. Electron microscopy studies of the hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer composites show that the particles of polyacrylamide, the dispersed phase, are separated by he network of the thin film of polystyrene, the continuous phase. This hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer composites show higher permselectivity to water in the mixture of water-ethanol. The pervaporation experiment shows that the selectivity of the membrane ranges between 4-40 and increases with increasing enthanol concentration in the feed. The rate of permeation decreases with increasing ethanol concentration in the feed.

  • In construction facilities such as bridges, the fluid boundary layer(or water film) is formed at the structure-soil interface by the inflow into the system due to rainfall or/and rising ground-water. As a result, the structure-soil interaction(SSI) state changes into the structure-fluid-soil interaction(SFSI) state. In general, construction facilities may be endangered by the inflow of water into the soil foundation. Thus, it is important to predict the dynamic SFSI responses accurately so that the facilities may be properly designed against such dangers. It is desired to have the robust tools of attaining such a purpose. However, there has not been any report of a method for the SFSI analyses. The objective of this study is to propose an efficient method of finite element modelling using the new interface element named hybrid interface element capable of giving reasonable predictions of the dynamic SFSI response. This element enables the simulation of the limited normal tensile resistance and the tangential hydro-plane behaviour, which has not been preceded in the previous studies. The hybrid interface element was tested numerically for its validity and employed in the analysis of SFSI responses of the continuous bridge subjected to seismic load under rainfall or/and rising ground-water condition. It showed that dynamic responses of the continuous bridge resting on direct foundation may be amplified under rainfall condition and consequently lead to significant variation of stresses.

  • Connections are usually designed either as pinned usually associated with simple construction or rigid normally is associated with continuous construction. However, the actual behaviour falls in between these two extreme cases. The use of partial strength or semi-rigid connections has been encouraged by Euro-code 3 and studies on semi-continuous construction have shown substantial savings in steel weight of the overall construction. Composite connections are proposed in this paper as partial or full strength connections. Standardized connection tables are developed based on checking on all possible failure modes as suggested by "component method" for beam-to-column composite connection on major axis. Four experimental tests were carried out to validate the proposed standardised connection table. The test results showed good agreement between experimental and theoretical values with the ratio in the range between 1.06 to 1.50. All tested specimens of the composite connections showed ductile type of failure with the formation of cracks occurred on concrete slab at maximum load. No failure occurred on the Trapezoidal Web Profiled Steel Section as beam and on the British Section as column.

  • Objectives: This study identified the factors associated with successful smoking cessation for 6 months at a smoking-cessation clinic of a public health center in an urban area. Methods: The subjects of this study were 670 visitors to the smoking cessation clinic of Dongjak-Gu public health center in Seoul, from September 6, 2005 to March 24, 2006. The 274 visitors of them responded to the questionnaire with registration, which contained the information related to the study except that of registered card for the clinic. A dependent variable was success or failure in smoking cessation during the 6 month-smoking cessation program, measured the status of smoking cessation in each week by self-report. Independent variable included demographic information, the characteristics in using the clinic, health status and smoking related behaviour, exposure to other smokers in daily life and motivation. Multiple logistic regression model was used to find the factors associated with success of smoking cessation. Results: The success rate in smoking cessation for 6 months was 33.6%. Five pretreatment characteristics were identified as univariate predictors of continuous abstinence. Finally, age, job, and practice oriented motivation were associated significantly with the success of smoking cessation for 6 months from a multiple logistic regression analysis. The lower socio-economic smokers such as people having lower literacy level, lower income people, unskilled workers, and recipients by Medical Assistant Program were more likely to fail in continuous abstinence for 6 months. Conclusions: In order to increase the success rate in smoking cessation clinics of public centers, counselors should activate self confidence and practice oriented motivation of participants for smoking cessation.

  • Several mathematical relationships have been developed to describe bacterial responses to UV irradiation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was taken as a bacterial model. The results obtained showed that the kinetics of disinfection is far to be as uniform. In fact, application of the model of Chick-Watson in its original form or modification, taking into account the speed change during the disinfection process, has not significantly improved results. The application of both models of Collins-Selleck and Hom constitute a major opportunity to simulate goodly the kinetics of UV disinfection. The results obtained showed that despite the major advantage held by applying the Hom model in this process of disinfection and for all strains studied, the model of Collins-Selleck gave the best results for the description of the UV inactivation process. The design of reactors, operating in continuous disinfection system, requires taking into account the hydrodynamic behaviour of water in the reactor. Knowing that a reduction of 4-log is necessary in the case of wastewater reuse for irrigation, a model integrating the expression of disinfection kinetics and the hydrodynamics through the UV irradiation room was proposed. The results highlight the interest to develop reactors in series working as four perfectly mixed reactors.

  • The structural system that discreterized continuous shells is frequently used to make dome-type structures and these structures show the unstable phenomena by snap-through or bifurcation when a load level reaches certain critical value. The characteristic structural behaviour of a cable dome shows a strong nonlinearity and very sensitive according to the initial imperfection. In this study the shape finding problem by applying initial tension stress is investigated and using this the unstable phenomena of perfectly shaped and initially imperfected shape model by external forces are examined to grasp the unstable behavior of cable dome using the Geiger-type model.

  • In this paper, we study asymptotic behaviour of solutions of the following higher order nonlinear dynamic equations $$S_n^{\Delta}(t,x)+{\delta}p(t)f(x(g(t)))=0$$ and $$S_n^{\Delta}(t,x)+{\delta}p(t)f(x(h(t)))=0$$ on an arbitrary time scale $\mathbb{T}$ with sup $\mathbb{T}={\infty}$, where n is a positive integer, ${\delta}=1$ or -1 and $$S_k(t,x)=\{\array x(t),\;if\;k=0,\\a_k(t)S_{{\kappa}-1}^{\Delta}(t),\;if\;1{\leq}k{\leq}n-1,\\a_n(t)[S_{{\kappa}-1}^{\Delta}(t)]^{\alpha},\;if\;k=n,$$ with ${\alpha}$ being a quotient of two odd positive integers and every $a_k$ ($1{\leq}k{\leq}n$) being positive rd-continuous function. We obtain some sufficient conditions for the equivalence of the oscillation of the above equations.

  • Additional cutouts in the floorbeam webs of orthotropic plated bridge decks relieve the highly stressed lower flange of the ribs passing through these floorbeam webs from possible fatigue damage. Conversely, the floorbeam webs themselves suffer from high stress concentrations, especially along the free edges of the additional cutouts. These stresses result from a combination of direct introduction of vertical traffic loads in the weakened web and from the truss action of the floorbeam. The latter differs from a simple beam action due to the presence of the openings and corresponds more to the behaviour of a Vierendeel truss. Close assessment of the appearing stresses, highly relevant for fatigue resistance, requires the use of elaborate finite element modelling. However, a full finite element analysis merely provides the results of total stresses, leaving the researcher or designer the difficult task of finding the origin of these stress components. This paper presents a calculation method for cutout stresses based on a combination of a framework analysis and a two dimensional finite element analysis of much smaller parts of the floorbeam. This method provides more insight in the origin of the stress components, as well as it simplifies any comparison of different additional cutout geometries, independent of the floorbeam topology.

  • The effect of various thermomechanical treatments on the structure and rheological behaviour of Al-6.2wt%Si alloy in its solidification range were investigated using a Searle type high temperature viscometer. During continuous cooling, the viscosity increases gradually with increasing fraction of solidified alloy, until a critical fraction of solidified alloy is reached above which the viscosity sharply increases. The viscosity of the slurry, at a given volume fraction wolid, decreased with increasing shear rate. The size and morphology of primary solid particles during stirring is influenced strongly by shear rates, cooling rates, volume fraction and stirring time of solid. Morphological changes during stirring as a function of solid volume fractions, shear rate and processing time were also reported. In this study, the size of primary solid particles in these alloys consistently increases and the it`s aspect ratio decrease with the increase in fraction solid and decrease in shear rate. Crystal morphology changes from rosette type to spheroid type with the increase in shear rate and solid fraction.
