  • Recently batch type cold rolling processes have been replaced by continuous annealing type processes for cold rolled sheets of mild steel and high strength steel in order to obtain higher productivity, labor saving. In the continuous annealing line, it is very important to maintain the target steel strip temperature at the exit side of each furnace. The automation system of continuous annealing line is based on a hierachical composition. This paper shows how to preset the set value of furnace temperature control for the heating section in a continuous annealing line. Saying in other words, this paper presents the development of an adaptive control approach to control the exit strip temperature in the continuous annealing line. There are three parts in this approach; one is a process modelling and another is recursive parameter estimation and the other is a design of temperature controller.

  • In continuous annealing line (CAL), POSCO, the center position control (CPC) is an essential technique that renders the steel-strip to pass at the center of a roll in order to prevent the strip from skewing or breaking. The CPC algorithm currently installed on the steering roll in the heating section of CAL is to control the strip position by using the reverse phase of error from the center position, without considering the dynamics of strip horizontal movement. Such algorithm may, unfortunately, require a manual operation occasionally when the range of strip input becomes wide, causing the dynamics 0 be dominant. Other PID-type control is rarely used in automatic operation because the excess of response may occur when the discontinuous points such as welding joints pass through rolls. In this paper, we identify the CPC system by using off-line data and design a compensator for the excessive dynamics by using the adaptive inverse control. Simulation result depicts the improved reliability of the proposed CPC system.

  • This paper presents the configuration methodology of Distributed Control System(DCS)s for process plant and their performance evaluation. Performance evaluation is specified both in terms of operational and installation aspects of system. In order to evaluate performance criteria of operational aspect, a simulation method is proposed. Modeling of system components including process computer, database, process controllers and LANs, etc, is implemented for simulation. Based on these characteristics, different system configurations are evaluated and compared through results about evaluation criteria in order to select the best DCS for particular process. The results, in abbreviated form, of the performance evaluation of DCS controlling a CAL(Continuous Annealing Line) plant of iron process are presented.

  • The hearth roll, which transfers the cold-rolled strip sheet in a Continuous Annealing Line (CAL), is always subjected to changes in the surface temperature and subsequently experiences thermal stress in service. These variations lead to the generation of thermal cracks on the hearth roll surface as well local plastic deformation. We performed finite element analysis to predict the thermal stress changes on the hearth roll surface and designed the collar shape of the hearth roll to minimize these thermal stresses. Results show that the hearth roll with a collar having an obtuse angle is much more effective than a hearth roll with collar having a right angle when the tangential stress, which is one of main causes leading to surface cracks, is compared for the various conditions. It was found that the tangential stress and the temperature on the surface of hearth roll can be reduced by 51.9% and 26℃ if the shape of roll on collar is re-designed.

  • Radiant tube heaters are widely used for indirect heating in heat treatment processes such as continuous annealing line(CAL) or continuous galvanizing line(CGL). Main issues for radiant tube are temperature uniformity, lifetime, thermal efficiency. To achieve higher heat release, the radiant tubes are fired at a higher fuel rate and therefore local overheating occur. A numerical simulation based on a commercial code FLUENT has been performed to investigate local overheating of radiant tube heaters. To minimize local overheating, the effects of radiating fins, flue gas recirculation(FGR), two-stage combustion were investigated. More uniform temperature distribution was achieved in the longitudinal direction within the tube with radiating fins and this contributed to increase the life of radiant tubes. Furthermore, the radiant tube with radiating fins was proven to be more efficient than the one without fins. The effects of flue gas recirculation and two stage combustion on the efficiency of the radiant tube were also considered and the results were presented.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop a scheduling system for CAL (Continuous Annealing Line) in Cold Rolling Mill. Based on CSP (Constraint Satisfaction Problem) technique in artificial intelligence, appropriate algorithms to provide schedules satisfying all the constraints imposed on CAL are designed and developed. Performance tests show that the proposed scheduling system outperforms human operators in case of aggregating the same attributes and minimizing the thickness differences between two adjacent coils.

  • This paper proposes a model for simulation and performance evaluation of distributed computer systems(DCS). The model is composed of operating system(OS), resource, task, environment submodel. Task Flow Graph(TFG) is suggested to describe the relation between tasks. This paper considers task response time, the scheduler's ready queue length, utilization of each resource as performance indices. The distributed system of Continuous Annealing Line(CAL) in iron process is simulated with the proposed model.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of steel plate oxidation with temperature in a simulated furnace. Used steel plates were a general steel and a high tensile steel. Porous media burner (PM burner) used in model furnace was made for uniform temperature profile. The surrounding temperature was controlled by adjusting the flow rate of the mixture in the combustor. Oxide layer analysis was performed using SEM image analysis and EDS line scanning. Both steel sheets showed a tendency to increase the thickness of the steel sheet surface oxide layer as the temperature increases, and it was confirmed that the flaking phenomenon in surface oxidation layer appeared when the temperature was above a certain temperature.

  • Effects of chemical compositions and manufacturing conditions on mechanical properties and microstructures were investigated in order to obtain galvannealed high strength dual phase steel sheets with superior mechanical properties and coating properties. An intercritical annealing between Ac1 and Ac3 was conducted to produce the DP (dual phase) steel sheets, followed by quenching to room temperature. The purposes of Al addition are to reduce the iron oxidation with chemical composition (Si, Mn etc.) and to improve the wettability by liquid zinc. The present study will focus on the characterization for making dual phase steel sheets and enhancing the galvanizability of Al added DP steel sheets about continuous annealing line in CGL.

  • One approach to improved image restoration methods has been the incorporation of additional source information via Gibbs priors that assume a source that is piecewise smooth. A natural Gibbs prior for expressing such constraints is an energy function defined on binary valued line processes as well as source intensities. However, the estimation of both continuous variables and binary variables is known to be a difficult problem. In this work, we consider the application of the deterministic annealing method. Unlike other methods, the deterministic annealing method offers a principled and efficient means of handling the problems associated with mixed continuous and binary variable objectives. The application of the deterministic annealing method results in a sequence of objective functions (defined only on the continuous variables) whose sequence of solutions approaches that of the original mixed variable objective function. The sequence is indexed by a control parameter (the temperature). The energy functions at high temperatures are smooth approximations of the energy functions at lower temperatures. Consequently, it is easier to minimize the energy functions at high temperatures and then track the minimum through the variation of the temperature. This is the essence of a continuation method. We show experimental results, which demonstrate the efficacy of the continuation method applied to a Bayesian restoration model.
