An image retrieval system based on image content is a key issue for building and managing large multimedia database, such as art galleries and museums, trademarks and copyrights, and picture archiving and communication system. Therefore, the interest on the subject of content-based image retrieval has been greatly increased for the last few years. This paper proposes a feature-based image retrieval technique which uses a compound feature vector representing both of color and shape of an image. Color information for the feature vector is obtained using the algebraic moment of each pixel of an image based on the property of regional color distribution. Shape information for the feature vector is obtained using the Improved Moment Invariant(IMI) which reduces the quantity of computation and increases retrieval efficiency. In the preprocessing phase for extracting shape feature, we transform a color image into a gray image. Since we make use of the modified DCT algorithm, it is implemented easily and can extract contour in real time. As an experiment, we have compared our method with previous methods using a database consisting of 150 automobile images, and the results of the experiment have shown that our method has the better performance on retrieval effectiveness.

The advances of computer hardware and information processing technologies raise the needs of multimedia information retrieval systems. Up to date. multimedia information systems have been developed for text information and image information. Nowadays. the multimedia information systems for video and audio information. especially for musical information have been grown up more and more. In recent music information retrieval systems. not only the information retrieval based on meta-information such like composer and title but also the content-based information retrieval is supported. The content-based information retrieval in music information retrieval systems utilize the similarity value between the user query and the music information stored in music database. In tbis paper. hence. we developed a similarity computation algorithm in which the pitches and lengths of each corresponding pair of notes are used as the fundamental factors for similarity computation between musical information. We also make an experiment of the proposed algorithm to validate its appropriateness. From the experimental results. the proposed similarity computation algorithm is shown to be able to correctly check whether two music files are analogous to each other or not based on melodies.

The ability of the searcher to express their information problem to an information retrieval system is fundamental to the retrieval process. Query by visual example is the principal query paradigm for expressing queries in a content-based image retrieval environment yet there is little empirical evidence to support its efficacy in facilitating query formulation. The aim of this research was to investigate the usability of the query by colour method in supporting a range of information problems in order to contribute to the gap in knowledge regarding the relationship between searchers' information problems and the query methods required to support efficient and effective visual query formulation. The results strongly suggest that the query method does not support visual query formulation and that there is a significant mismatch between the searchers information problems and the expressive power of the retrieval paradigm.
In the content-based video retrieval applications, the information on the movement of an object can be used as important in classifying the content. In particular, analyzing and classifying human movement can be used for various purposes as well as retrieval. In this paper, a method to improve the performance of the shape variation descriptor and shape sequence to describe and classify movement using shape information that changes according to the movement of an object is proposed. By selecting a shape descriptor to more efficiently describe the shape information of an object and comparing the distance function used to measure the similarity, the description and retrieval efficiency of movement information can be increased. Through experiments, it was shown that the proposed method can describe movement information more efficiently and increase the retrieval efficiency compared to the previous method.

A content-based image retrieval method using color, texture, and shape features is proposed in this paper. A region segmentation technique using PIM(Picture Information Measure) entropy is used for similarity indexing. For segmentation, a color image is first transformed to a gray image and it is divided into n$\times$n non-overlapping blocks. Entropy using PIM is obtained from each block. Adequate variance to perform good segmentation of images in the database is obtained heuristically. As variance increases up to some bound, objects within the image can be easily segmented from the background. Therefore, variance is a good indication for adequate image segmentation. For high variance image, the image is segmented into two regions-high and low entropy regions. In high entropy region, hue-saturation-intensity and canny edge histograms are used for image similarity calculation. For image having lower variance is well represented by global texture information. Experiments show that the proposed method displayed similar images at the average of 4th rank for top-10 retrieval case.
In this paper, we propose a new method for content-based retrieval system using wavelet transform and correlation, which has were used in signal processing and image compressing. The matching method is used not perfect matching but similar matching. Used feature vector is the lowest frequency(LL) itself, energy value, and edge information of 4-layer, after computng a 4-layer 2-D fast wavelet transform on image. By the proosed algorithm, we got the result that was faste rand more accurate than the traditional algorithm. Because used feature vector was compressed 256:1 over original image, retrieval speed was highly improved. By using correlation, moving object with size variation was reterieved without additional feature information.

This study has proposed a method of content-based image retrieval in order to overcome disadvantages of color histogram. The existing histogram method has a weak point that reduces accuracy because of quantization error, and more. In order to solve this, we convert color information to HSV and quantize Hue factor being net color information and calculate histogram and then use this for retrieval feature that is robust in brightness, movement, and rotation. As a result of experimenting, the method proposed has showed better precision than the existing method.

In this paper, we describe a new trademark retrieval system based upon the content or the shape of trademark. The system has an on-line graphical user interface for the World Wide Web (WWW) that allows user to provide a query in forms of a sketch or a visual image to search for similar trademarks from database. User interfaces for the WWW were implemented by utilizing HTML and Java applets. The query can occur in arbitrary size and orientation. A shape representation scheme invariant to scale and rotation was developed to measure the similarity between two trademarks using the magnitude of Zernike moments as a feature set. Performance evaluation has been carried out with a database of 3,000 trademarks. It takes only about 0.6 second for the retrieval on a 200 MHz Pentium PC. The average recall of the original one among top 30 candidates queried by noisy or deformed images was 100%.
To enable a relevance feedback paradigm to evolve itself by users' feedback, a reinforcement learning method is proposed. The feature space of the medical images is partitioned into positive and negative hypercubes by the system. Each hypercube constitutes an individual in a genetic algorithm infrastructure. The rules take recombination and mutation operators to make new rules for better exploring the feature space. The effectiveness of the rules is checked by a scoring method by which the ineffective rules will be omitted gradually and the effective ones survive. Our experiments on a set of 10,004 images from the IRMA database show that the proposed approach can better describe the semantic content of images for image retrieval with respect to other existing approaches in the literature.
As the number of digital images available to users is exponentially growing due to the rapid development of digital technology, content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been one of the most active research areas. A variety of image retrieval methods have been proposed, where, given an input query image, the images that are similar to the input are retrieved from an image database based on low-level features such as colors and textures. However, most of the existing retrieval methods did not consider the case when an input query image is a part of a whole image in the database due to the high complexity involved in partial matching. In this paper, we present an efficient method for partial image matching by using the histogram distribution relationships between query image and whole image. The proposed approach consists of two steps: the first step prunes the search space and the second step performs block-based retrieval using partial image matching to rank images in candidate set. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm after assuming that the response tune of the system is very high while retrieving only by using partial image matching without Pruning the search space.
