  • This study was on leaching test(KSLT) of the aggregate for the products to evaluate the characteristics of contaminants and the possibility of contamination arising from the aggregate. On the basis pH, conductivity, turbidity, TN, TP, COD and heavy metal contents in the aggregate increased as the particle size of the aggregate was smaller. The pH appeared to be 9.9~11.4 which is relatively higher than soil, however, heavy metal has investigated within the 1 region's standard value of soil pollution standards. From the leaching test, there is strong indication that the risk of pollution due to elution of pollutants gets higher with the smaller grain size. Especially conductivity and turbidity are the potential water pollution source and recycled aggregates of 10mm or less could be a potential pollution source since it could elute soluble matters and suspended solid, but there is no proper management standard for them. As a result of evaluating water pollution possibility of the aggregate, the pH displayed in items with a very high possibility of contamination, TN and TP did in item with a low possibility of contamination and on the other hand the heavy metals did in item with a very low possibility of contamination.

  • The result of an investigation conducted to study the effect of crude oil contamination on the geotechnical properties of sand is presented. The effect of the degree of oil contamination on compaction charateristics, shear strength, and one-dimensional compression charateristics has been investigated. The test results indicate that the compaction charateristics are somewhat influenced by oil contamination The angle friction of sand (based on total stress basis) decreases due to the presence of oil within the pore spaces in sand. The compression charateristics of sand are significantly influenced by oil contamination. The details of the tests conducted and the results are presented in the paper.

  • The waveforms of the leakage currents for the surface discharge according to the degree of salt contamination and the variation of environmental condition on the EPDM polymer insulators, were shown in this paper. The variation phenomena of fundamental wave, 3rd and 5th harmonic waveforms were also shown from the beginning of the applied voltage and to the flashover voltage. To develop the technique of percentage contamination degree of EPDM polymer insulator according to the variation of environmental condition, the distortion degree of 3rd and 5th harmonic wave to the fundamental wave was utilized through the spectrum analysis for the waveforms of leakage current in the simulation of salt and fog test. The fact that distortion degree % of 3rd and 5th harmonics for fundamental wave is a necessary indicator for the assessment of contamination degree for the polymer insulators, was known.

  • Lipsticks are cosmetics which do not contain water and are usually preserved with parabens. When submitted to the Challenge Test, theses products did not reach the CTFA criteria, which means that microbiological contamination could occur before the end of its shelf life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contamination level of 130 lipsticks after its use. Microorganisms were isolated from 14,6 % of the samples. However, only in two samples (1,5%) the contamination level exceeded the 100 CFU/g level, which means that, although the preservative system was not efficient to eliminate bacteria, the lack of free water was enough to prevent the microbial development. Total bacteria and fungi were determined by conventional methodology, according to CTFA Microbiological Guidelines. The microbes were then isolated and characterized as normal skin flora microorganisms. This suggest that products were contaminated by the constant application of lipsticks by consumers. This could lead to cross contamination when the same product is shared by several people. Extra care should be taken into account when this type of products are available to be tested by several consumers in demonstration displays.

  • The important consideration in laboratory designing and construction of the artificial pollution testing facilities including 300kV, 1800kVA AC test system, which enable to test and evaluate the UHV dielectric performance of power insulators up to transmission class, has been dealt in this paper. To evaluate the performance characteristics against contamination for various power installation, especially for the insulators and kinds of bushings, brief investigation and an analysis of test objects and related international codes and standards have been conducted. With the special consideration concerning other matters in designing of these testing facilities have been described with the fixed ratings and references.

  • Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of pore water contamination on the treatment effect of sandy soil which was solidified by Portland cement. In the experiments, setting time of hydraulic cement that was mixed with contaminated mixing water was measured using Vicat equipment and observed the tendency of setting process with the kind of contaminants, organic or inorganic components. It was shown that organic contaminants of the mixing water affect largely on the initial setting process of hydraulic cement and inorganics, expecially heavy metals, did not affect on the initial setting process, otherwise it was appeared that setting time of the sandy soil that was contaminated with inorganic components was apparently faster than the sandy soil that did not include inorganic components even though organic concentrations was relatively low level (COD=200∼300) in the mixing water. The results of unconfined compression strength test (UCST) were well consistent with the results of Vicat equipment test.

  • Dry decontamination technique is required for maintaining nuclear material handling equipment contaminated with highly radioactive material in a hot cell. In order to determine the optimum blasting conditions of dry ice pellet blasting device, the basic experiments have been conducted on the simulated test specimens of four types of metals. The removal efficiency of test piece was evaluated by the XRF analysis and the change of the surface condition before and after blasting. The removal efficiency of cesium on loose contamination was 100% under blasting pressure; 3 kg/$cm^2$, blasting distance; 10 cm, blasting time: 10 sec. In case of fixed contamination, the removal efficiency of cesium was almost 96% under blasting pressure; 4kg/$cm^2$, blasting distance; 10 cm, blasting time; 30 sec.

  • The salt contamination on the distribution facilities, such as suspension insulator, line post insulator, lightning arrester, COS, is one of the major coastal areas because more than 90% of salt contaminated failure occurs in distribution facilities. Did to stain distribution facilities artificially according to Equivalent Salt Deposit Density(ESDD) grade. The electrical test were performed on the non-polluted and polluted facilities(ESDD B, C, D grade).
