O/Pd(100)-p($2{\times}2$) 표면구조 및 수소흡착 효과의 제일원리 이론계산 연구 (First-Principles Theoretical Study of the Surface Structure of O/Pd(100)-p($2{\times}2$) and the Effect of H Impurities)

  • 0,25 ML의 산소원자가 흡착하여 이루는 O/Pd(100)-p($2{\times}2$) 표면의 원자구조를 밀도범함수 이론 계산을 통해 연구하였다, Pd(100) 표면의 fourfold hollow 위치가 가장 안정된 산소 흡착위치로 밝혀졌고 O-Pd 결합거리는 $2,15{\AA}$으로 계산되었다. 산소 흡착에 의해 Pd(100) 표면의 첫 번째 층간격 ($d_{12}$) 은 +0,8%의 팽창을 보이는데 이 계산결과는 +3,6%의 팽창을 보고 한 LEED 실험 결과와 차이를 보인다. 차이의 원인으로 시료 표변에 수소 불순물이 존재하였을 가능성을 고려하여 계산한 결과, O/Pd(100)-p($2{\times}2$)에 수소원자가 흡착할 때 $d_{12}$의 팽창이 유발됨을 확인하였다. 수소 흡착량에 따른 구조변화를 분석하여 LEED 시료 표변에 잔존할 것으로 예상되는 수소의 양을 약 0,3 ML로 추정하였다.

점토질 모래에서의 Ultrasonic을 이용한 투수성의 증진 (Ultrasonic Engancement of Flow in Clayey Sands)

  • 매립이 완료된 Landfills이나 오염된 지하수의 오염물질을 제거하여 다른 용도로 재사용하는 기술이 오늘날 중요한 문제로 대두되고 있다. 진동을 이용하여 제가효율을 높히는 방법은 요즘 흔히 사용되고 있는 방법중의 하나이다. Ultrasonic의 효과를 사용함으로써, 기계적인 제거효과가 대단하다는 것은 이미 몇몇 연구자들에 의해 확인된바 있다. 이 연구에서는 Probe-Type Lutrasonic Processor를 사용하여 Clayey-Sand Chamber를 가지고 실험을 해보았다. 실험중 계속적인 Pumping과 함께 Ultrasonic을 작동시킨 결과, Clayey 입자들의 분리 및 제거에 큰 효과를 얻었으며, 그로 인하여 투수계수가 크게 증가하는 효과를 보았다. 또한, 실험 전과 후의 입자크기의 분포도가 크게 변했는데, 그 이유는 Ultrasonic의 진동효과 때문이다. 실험결과, 0.004mm 이하의 입자들은 Ultrasonic의 효과에 의해 Mobilize되었으며, 0.04-1.0mm의 입자는 부서져서 작은 입자로 되었다. 이 기구를 사용하기 위한 유지비와 전력비등을 고려하여 이 기구의 실용성을 검토해 보았다. 필요한 Power를 위해 요구되는 전력의 양은 깊이에 의한 대상 site의 응력, 온도, 그리고 Fuid의 Viscosity에 의해 좌우되며, 그중 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요소는 흙의 깊이이다. 여러 가지의 다른 깊이에서의 경제적인 실용성을 1.0, 2.0in 직경의 Horn Sonicator를 사용했을 경우에 대하여 비교와 분석을 하였다.

제주도 동부지역 지하수의 염수화에 관한 연구 (Study on The Salinization in Groundwater of the Eastern Area of Cheju Island)

  • According to the results of the groundwater quality investigation about 230 holes all over the country, the groundwater which was in excess of standard grows larger every year and closed holes increased to 23,457 holes in 1997 from 15,724 holes in 1996. This is the major reasons that water quality contamination, shortage of water quantity, increasing of salinity and so on. There are 7 groundwater salinization sources which are condisered as most important on a regional level. And among theses the Cheju Island groundwater salinization sources are (1) halite solution, (2) natural saline groundwater, (3) sea-water intrusion. The method of taking an isotopes is one of research methods of the origin of groundwater salinization and is used in so many studies because it has very high confidence. $^{18O}O, ^2H, ^3H, ^{14}C$ and so on in an isotopes are frequently used in the method of them. Consequently on this study we analyzed major ions and $^3H$ in groundwater, sea-water and rain of the eastern part of cheju island known as contaminated site from long time ago to examine the origin of groundwater salinization. Relation ratios of the major ions versus chloride ion shows similar tendency to sea-water. This indicates that sea-water entered the groundwater layer. And amount of $^3H$ in holes of the land side is higher than of the sea side. Relation of chloride ion versus $^3$H indicates negative character. Therefore we can think that the reason of groundwater salinization of this part is natural saline groundwater and halite solution by relation.

Reuse and Remediation of Closed Landfill in Korea

  • A recent survey investigated that there were over one thousand un-controlled closed landfills(1,072 sites) in Republic of Korea. Most of these landfills were constructed before 1986. Waste management act were not promulgated at that time, so they usually do not have dranage system and leachate treatment facility. Also, considerable attention has been received to landfill leachate pollution, leachate has an adverse impact on the surrounding environment such as soil, groundwater, and water supply source. According to the result of survey for closed landfill management, it was reported that 875 sites out of 1,072sites(81.6%) have no leachate treatment facility and 630 sites out of 1,072sites(58.7%) have been used for farm lands and residence. Consequently it is hard to do postclosure care continuously in most of cases and these uncontrolled landfills have contaminated farm lands and residence. The average age of these landfills are ranged mostly between 2 to 15 years. Much time and advanced technology are needed to remediate these uncontrolled landfills, therefore the survey for present status of closed landfill sites is required and suitable treatment processes should be prepared. With this point of view, We has been investigated to find out the present status of closed landfill, problems of post management and discussed plans for remediation and reuse. Remedial actions of un-controlled landfill have been carried out the many cities since 1997 upto now. Most frequently applied technology were reuse after excavation and there were several cases to capping in the surface of landfill and to construct subsurface barriers. It is considered that landfills in use have a possibility not to be controlled because of inadequate construction and improper management. Therefore remediation of uncontrolled landfills and recovery technology should be develop continuously Especially, it has been expected that resource technology of landfill gas as a energy has some advantages in controlling odors in the site area and accelerating stabilization of landfills with the energy.

세척과 안정화기술을 적용한 오염 준설토의 처리 및 재활용 시스템 개발 (A Tiered Approach of Washing and Stabilization to Decontaminate and Recycle Dredged River Sediment)

  • Although the demands for the dredging work have been increasing due to social and industrial reasons including national plan for restoration of four major rivers, environmental standards or management guidelines for the dredged river sediment are limited. The suggested environmental standard for the beneficial use of dredged river sediment consists of two levels, recyclable and concern, and includes eight contaminants such as metals and organic contaminants. The systematic approach to remediate dredged river sediment is also suggested. The system consists of both washing and stabilization processes with continuous multi particle separation. In the early stage, the sediments are separated into two particle sizes. The coarse-grained sediment over 0.075 mm, generally decontaminated with less trouble, follows normal washing steps and is sent for recycling. The fine-grained sediments under 0.075 mm are separated again at 0.025 mm. The particles bigger than this second separation point are treated in two ways, advanced washing for highly contaminated sediments and stabilization for less. The lab test results show that birnessite and apatite are most effective stabilizing agents among tested for Cd and Pb. The most fine residues, down-sized by continuous particle separation, are finally sent for disposal. The system is tested for metals in this study, but is expected to be effective for organic contaminants included in the environmental standard, such as PAH and PCE. The feasibility test on the field site will be followed.

Socio-economic and Environmental Impact Assessment in Agricultural Cultivation, Case Studies in Rice Cultivation and Shrimp Farming in the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam

  • This paper provides two case studies of environmental impacts with socio-economic values. The first case is on flood protection levees conducted from 2003 to 2004 in Phu Tan district, An Giang province. The impacts were found by comparing full flood protection levees area (FFPL) to non-full flood protection levees area (NFFPL). Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools per each group of rich, middle, and poor people were used to list the impacts. Then, major impacts were selected by ranking and interviewing 60 households per site, and assessed by Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) in rice production from 1996 to 2002 between two areas. The tested research indicated moving system of NFFPL to that of FFPL lost about 11 million VND/ha/year. The second case is on impacts of Penaeid shrimp farming conducted in Duyen Hai District, Tra Vinh Province in 2004-2005. Ninety households and 12 local officials were interviewed. Four PRAs were conducted and 36 water samples were taken inside and outside shrimp pond to measure values of DO, COD, Fe total, TSS, N-$NO_3{^-}$, N-$NH_4{^+}$, P-$PO{_4}^{3-}$, and Chlorophyll-a. Research results showed only 36.7% of the households got profit from shrimp farming. Highest financial efficiency was 0.72 for the semi-intensive system. Tested water indicators showed surface water quality did not match Vietnamese standard for surface water in coastal area (TCVN 5943-1995) and in rain. The water was very muddy and contaminated by organic aluminum. Summarily, the impacts were clarified more obviously via adding socio-economic values to assessment. Importantly, the values were transformed to household's income which is an indicator for policy-makers to consider the impacts obviously. Besides, data of different group of people impacted are cases contributing to consideration of the impacts in an appropriate social level.

Technical Approaches for Assessment of Ground Water Contamination with TCE in an Industrial Area

  • Despite its usability, TCE has been managed as a hazardous material due to the toxicity and many contamination cases were surveyed in some developed countries. U.S.EPA(Kram et al., 2001) suggested DNAPL characterization methods and approaches based on survey experiences at several sites. However, Korea has not the least assessment of contamination and trial of remediation, although there are a lot of doubtable areas where ground water would be contaminated with TCE. In this study, we try to assess the volume and extent of ground water contamination with TCE and delineate the contamination source zones in an industrial area. Ground water in this area flows through fractures and the contaminant TCE has the properties of high volatility, high density and low partitioning to soil material. Thus, we applied a variety of technical approaches to identify the contamination status; documentary, hydrogeochemical, hydrogeological and geological surveys. In addition, additional survey was performed based on the interim findings, which showed that ground water contamination was limited to the relatively small area with high concentrations to the deep place. The contamination source zone is estimated to be the asphalt test institute where a great deal of TCE has been used to analyze the amount of asphalt soluble in TCE since 1984. Based on the contamination characterization and a myriad of documents about ground water remediation, appropriate site remediation management options will be recommended later. This study is now under way and this paper was focused on describing the technical approaches used to achieve the goals of this study.

다양한 실내 침투 휘발물질 농도 예측 방법을 이용한 토양오염물질의 실내흡입 위해성평가 (Risk Assessment of Volatile Organic Compounds for Vapor Intrusion Pathway Using Various Estimation Methodology of Indoor Air Concentration)

  • Indoor inhalation of vapors intruded into buildings is an important exposure pathway in volatile organic compoundscontaminated sites. Site-specifically measured indoor air concentration is preferentially used for risk assessment. However, when indoor air concentration of VOC is not measured, the indoor air concentration needs to be estimated from soil concentration or measured soil gas concentration of the VOC. Some risk assessment guidance (e.g., Korea Ministry of Environment (KMOE) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International guidance) estimate the indoor air concentration from soil concentration while other guidances (e.g., United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM)) estimate it from measured soil gas concentration. This study derived indoor inhalation risks of intruded benzene in two benzene-contaminated residential areas with four different risk assessment guidances (i.e., KMOE, USEPA, ASTM, and Dutch RIVM) and compared the derived risks. The risk assessment results revealed that indoor air estimation approach from soil concentration could either underestimate (when the contaminant is not detected in soil) or overestimate (when the contaminant is detected in soil even at negligible concentration) the indoor air inhalation risk. Hence, this paper recommends to estimate indoor air concentration from soil gas concentration, rather than soil concentration. Discussions about the various indoor air concentration estimation approaches are provided.

셀레늄-미생물간의 반응 및 셀레늄 광물화 특성 (Interaction between Selenium and Bacterium and Mineralogical Characteristics of Biotreated Selenium)

  • 철환원 박테리아인 미시가넨시스를 이용하여 용존 셀레늄을 제거할 때, 물 속의 다른 금속성분들인 철, 황산염, 그리 구리가 미칠 수 있 영향을 살펴보았다. 미시가넨시스 박테리아는 산화수가 4가인 산화 셀레나이트(2 mM)를 셀레나이드로 환원시키고 물속의 셀레늄 농도를 점차 감소시켰다. 환원된 셀레나이드는 용존 2가 철과 결합하여 나노입자 크기의 철-셀레나이드로 침전되었다. 용존 황산염과 구리는 미생물의 셀레나이트 환원작용에 부정적인 영향을 끼쳤는데, 특히 구리 성분은 미생물에 대해 독성으로 작용하여 셀레나이트 제거가 원활히 이뤄지지 못하게 하였다. 이러한 결과로부터 알 수 있는 것은 셀레늄으로 오염된 현장을 미생물로 정화할 때 황산염 혹은 구리의 농도 분포와 양을 충분히 고려해야 한다는 사실이다. 궁극적으로 미생물에 의한 철-셀레나이드 광물형성작용은 지하수를 따라 원거리로 이동할 수 있는 셀레늄의 확산을 억제하는 중요한 수단이라고 볼 수 있다.

철도 차량기지의 토양오염 실태 조사 (Investigation of Soil Pollution Status for Railroad Depot)

  • 철도는 그동안 친환경 교통수단으로 알려져 왔다. 그러나 토양환경보전법 제정 이전 수십 년간 인지하지 못하는 토양오염들이 철도 시설 부지에서 유발되어 왔다. 철도차량기지 등에서는 철도차량 유지관리 및 수선을 위해 사용되어진 많은 폐기물과 유기용제들이 부지 내에 투기되어온 것들이 사실이다. 이들 부지의 개발과 활용을 위해서는 과거의 오염지역에 대한 정차가 선결되어야 하는데, 본 연구는 차량기지의 토양 오염현황과 복원 대책을 제안하기 위해 수행되어 졌다. 차량기지 내 폐기물 투기 지역에서는 유류오염물질인 TPH 성분과 몇몇 중금속 성분이 토양오염 기준치를 초과하는 것으로 나타났으며, 기지 내 선로와 분기기에 대한 조사에서는 분기기 하부에서 유류오염물질이 관측되었다. 원위치, 또는 굴착 후 정차 등의 방법이 오염정화를 위해 적용되어질 수 있으며, 현장의 특성을 고려하고, 모의시험을 통해 적절한 정화 방법을 채택할 경우 현장의 오염정화를 완성할 수 있을 것이다.
