Determination of the optimal location of monitoring wells reducing uncertainty of contaminant plume distribution

  • Contaminated area should be identified for designing polluted groundwater cleanup plan. A methodology was suggested to identify a contaminant plume distribution geostatistically. James & Gorelick (1994) suggested a methodology to evaluate data worth as expected reducing remediation cost. In this study, their methodology was modified to evaluate data worth as expected reducing uncertainty of the contaminant plume distribution. In suggested methodology, the source identification model by Mahar & Datta (2001) using a forward solute transport model is integrated. Suggested methodology was assessed by two simple example problems and its result represented reducing uncertainties of contaminant plume distribution successfully.

청사 건물의 Bio-Attack에 따른 미생물 오염원 확산 및 제어방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Microbial Contaminant Transport and Control Method According to Government Building Bio- Attack)

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the movement of microbial contaminant caused by bio-attack using bio-agent such as bacillus anthracis for preventing contaminant diffusion. multizone simulation was carried out in the case of three types of bio-attack scenario in the government building. Simulation results show that severe contaminant diffusion is brought about in all cases of bio-attack scenario in one hour, though pollution boundaries have different mode according to bio-attack scenarios. Simulation results also show that immune building technology such as filter and UVGI technology gives us powerful alternatives to meet the emergent situation caused by unexpected bio-attack.

  • Contaminant transport in groundwater induces major threat and harmful effect on the environment; hence, the fate of the contaminant migration in groundwater is seeking a lot of attention. In this paper a two dimensional numerical flow and transport model through saturated layered soil is developed. Groundwater flow and solute transport has been simulated numerically using proposed model. The model implements the finite volume time splitting method to discretize the main equations. The performance, accuracy and efficiency of the out coming numerical models have been successfully examined by two test cases. The verification test cases consist of two-dimensional, groundwater flow and solute transport. The final purpose of this paper is to discuss and compare the shape of contaminant plume in homogeneous and heterogeneous media with different soil properties and control of solute transport using a zone for minimizing the potential of groundwater contamination; furthermore, this model leads to select the effective and optimum remedial strategies for cleaning the contaminated aquifers.

  • 지구 통계학적 방법을 이용하여 수도권 쓰레기 매립지 수리전도도의 비균질성에 대하여 분석하고 오염 이동해석을 실시하였다. 수리전도도는 가압 실내투수시험 자료와 현장 투수시험 자료를 이용하였고 지구통계학적 방법으로는 일반크리깅과 조건부 시뮬레이션 방법을 이용하였다. 그 결과 조건부 시뮬레이션에 의한 수리전도도의 비균질성이 일반크리깅에 의한 것보다 크게 나타났으며 비균질성이 큰 조건부 시뮬레이션에 의하여 구해진 수리전도도 상의 오염물이동성이 일반크리깅에 의하여 구해진 수리전도도 상의 이동 결과 보다 큰 것으로 나타났다.

  • A practical estimation method for groundwater contaminant concentration is introduced. Using geostatistical techniques and symmetry, experimental variograms show significant improved correlation compared with those from conventional techniques. Numrical experiments are performed using a field data set.

기계식 환기시스템에 의한 선내 오염물질 확산 특성 예측 (A Prediction on Indoor Contaminant Diffusion Characteristics of a Training Ship by Mechanical Ventilation System)

  • 본 연구는 기계식 환기장치에 의한 선박 선실 내의 환경오염물질 확산특성을 파악한 것으로, 연구성과는 다음과 같다. 오염발생 선실 내에서는 오염발생 35분 경과 후 오염물질이 대부분 제거되었고, 신선외기 도입율 변화에 따른 영향은 무시할 수 있었다. 오염원 선실에 인접한 선실의 오염물질 제거시간은 65분~100분 정도로 신선외기 도입율에 따라 차이가 발생했다. 상부 데크에 오염원 선실이 있는 경우가 하부 데크에 오염원 선실이 있는 경우에 비해, 오염농도는 10배 정도 높지만, 대표 공간 중 오염된 공간의 수는 오히려 1/2에 불과했다. 그러나 전체공간을 대상으로 한 평가에서는, 상부 데크에서 오염물질이 발생한 경우에는 Upper 데크 이상 상부 데크 내 공간의 50% 이상이 평가기준 0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1% 일 때 오염될 것으로 예측되었고, 하부 데크에서 오염물질이 발생하는 경우에는 하부 데크를 중심으로 오염공간이 많지만 오염판단기준 0.01%일 때에는 Shelter 데크 이상의 상부 데크에서도 오염선실이 나타났다. 한편, 신선외기 도입량 변화에 따른 오염농도 및 오염공간 비율을 분석한 결과 설계용량 대비 75% 이상의 외기가 도입될 때 선실 내 오염수준이 낮아지는 것으로 평가되었다.

Numerical Analysis for Contaminant Transport using a Dual Reactive Domain Model

  • Contaminant transport in porous media is characterized by solving an advection-dispersion equation(ADE). The ADE can cover equilibrium phenomena of interest, which include sorption, decay, and chemical reactions. Among these phenomena, sorption mechanism is described by several types of sorption isotherm. If we assume the sorption isotherm as linear, the solution of ADE can be easily procured. However, if we consider the sorption isotherm as non-linear isotherm like a Dual Reactive Domain Model (DRDM), the resulting differential equation becomes non-linear. In this case, the solution of ADE cannot be easily acquired by an analytic method. In this paper, we present the numerical analysis of ADE using a DRDM. The results reveal that even if sorption data may be fitted well using linear or non-linear isotherm, the characteristics of contaminant transport of the two cases are different from each other. To be concrete, the retardation of linear isotherm has stronger effect than that of the DRDM. As the non-linearity of sorption isotherm increases, the difference of retardation effects of the two cases becomes larger. For a pulse source, the maximum concentration of the linear model is higher than that of the DRDM, but the plume of the DRDM moves faster than that of the linear model. Behaviors of contaminant transport using the DRDM are consistent with common features of a linear model. For instance, biodegradation effect becomes larger as time goes by The faster the seepage velocity is, the faster the plume of contaminant moves. The plume of the contaminant is distributed evenly over overall domain in the event of high dispersion coefficient.

REVIEW OF GROUNDWATER CONTAMINANT MASS FLUX MEASUREMENT

  • The ability to measure groundwater contaminant flux is increasingly being recognized as crucial in order to prioritize contaminated site cleanups, estimate the efficiency of remediation technologies, measure rates of natural attenuation, and apply proper source terms to model groundwater contaminant transport. Recently, a number of methods have been developed and subsequently applied to measure contaminant mass flux in groundwater in the field. Flux measurement methods can be categorized as either point methods or integral methods. As the name suggests, point methods measure flux at a specific point or points in the subsurface. To increase confidence in the accuracy of the measurement, it is necessary to increase the number of points (and therefore, the cost) of the sampling network. Integral methods avoid this disadvantage by using pumping wells to interrogate large volumes of the subsurface. Unfortunately, integral methods are expensive because they require that large volumes of contaminated water be extracted and managed. Recent work has investigated the development of an integral method that does not require extraction of contaminated water from the subsurface. We begin with a review of the significance and importance of measuring groundwater contaminant mass flux. We then review groundwater contaminant flux measurement methods that are either currently in use or under development. Finally, we conclude with a qualitative comparison of the various flux measurement methods.

  • The groundwater has been a major source of water supply throughout the ages. Around 50% of the rural as well as urban population in the developing countries like India depends on groundwater for drinking. The groundwater is also an important source in the agriculture and industrial sector. In many parts of the world, groundwater resources are under increasing threat from growing demands, wasteful use and contamination. A good planning and management practices are needed to face this challenge. A key to the management of groundwater is the ability to model the movement of fluids and contaminants in the subsurface environment. It is obvious that the contaminant source activities cannot be completely eliminated and perhaps our water bodies will continue to serve as receptors of vast quantities of waste. In such a scenario, the goal of water quality protection efforts must necessarily be the control and management of these sources to ensure that released pollutants will be sufficiently attenuated within the region of interest and the quality of water at points of withdrawal is not impaired. In order to understand the behaviour of contaminant transport through different types of media, several researchers are carrying out experimental investigations through laboratory and field studies. Many of them are working on the analytical and numerical studies to simulate the movement of contaminants in soil and groundwater of the contaminant transport. With the advent of high power computers especially, a numerical modelling has gained popularity and is indeed of particular relevance in this regard. This paper provides the state of the art of contaminant transport and reviews the allied research works carried out through experimental investigation or using the analytical solution and numerical method. The review involves the investigation in respect of both, saturated and unsaturated, porous media.

해상 폐기물매립지 연직차수벽체 근입심도에 따른 오염물질 이동특성 분석 (Analysis on Contaminant Transport according to the Embedded Depth of Vertical Barrier of Offshore Landfill)

  • 해상처분장에서 내부 오염물질의 외부 유출을 방지하기 위하여 연직차수벽체가 설치된다. 연직차수벽체가 오염물질의 이동을 효과적으로 차단하기 위해서는 연직차수벽체가 해저지반의 적정 근입깊이까지 설치되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 연직차수벽체 근입심도에 따른 해저지반을 통한 침투 및 오염물질 이동특성을 분석하기 위하여 2차원 유한요소해석 프로그램인 SEEP/W를 이용한 침투해석과 3차원 유한차분해석 프로그램인 Visual Modflow를 이용한 오염물질 이동해석을 수행하였다. 수치해석결과, 연직차수벽체는 저투수성 지반으로 일정 깊이 이상 근입되면 오염물질 유출방지 효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 경제적인 연직차수벽체 설계를 위해서는 오염물질 이동을 차단할 수 있는 효과적인 최소 근입심도를 산정하여 적용하는 것이 효과적일 것으로 판단된다.
