Wave induced vibrations increase the fatigue and extreme loading, but this is normally neglected in design. The industry view on this is changing. Wave induced vibrations are often divided into springing and whipping, and their relative contribution to fatigue and extreme loading varies depending on ship design. When it comes to displacement vessels, the contribution from whipping on fatigue and extreme loading is particularly high for certain container vessels. A large modern design container vessel with high bow flare angle and high service speed has been considered. The container vessel was equipped with a hull monitoring system from a recognized supplier of HMON systems. The vessel has been operating between Asia and Europe for a few years and valuable data has been collected. Also model tests have been carried out of this vessel to investigate fatigue and extreme loading, but model tests are often limited to head seas. For the full scale measurements, the correlation between stress data and wind data has been investigated. The wave and vibration damage are shown versus heading and Beaufort strength to indicate general trends. The wind data has also been compared to North Atlantic design environment. Even though it has been shown that the encountered wind data has been much less severe than in North Atlantic, the extreme loading defined by IACS URS11 is significantly exceeded when whipping is included. If whipping may contribute to collapse, then proper seamanship may be useful in order to limit the extreme loading. The vibration damage is also observed to be high from head to beam seas, and even present in stern seas, but fatigue damage in general is low on this East Asia to Europe trade.

For container shipping company, fuel oil prise is a considerable expense. In the last 3 years, fuel oil prises have risen considerably. An increasing fuel oil prise in container shipping, in the short term, is only partially compensated through surcharges and will therefore affect earnings negatively. This paper deals with the impact of increasing fuel oil price and capital costs for vessels on the number of vessels on the Asia-Europe trade. As per result of 'H' carrier's operation in 2008, there were no cost difference between 8 and 9 vessels operation in case the fuel oil price is USD 169/tons while adopt USD 31,818 as fixed cost. We can expect that the fuel oil price will not be decreased under USD 200 $/Ton on the basis of current high oil price phenomenon. When the fuel oil price is over USD 200 $/ton, therefore, 9 vessels operation is more economic than 8 vessel operation even if the fixed cost is over USD 35,000.
The competitiveness of container terminals hinges on minimizing the time vessels spend in port and on schedule services. Many previous researches on container terminals have tried to optimize the equipment allocation plan and to improve the activity of resources. Nevertheless, there have been few researches conducted on yard tractors, which move containers between the quay and the yard. The aim of this study is to propose the use of Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) based Dynamic Planning for yard tractors. Only RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags, which are attached to yard tractors, are able to support RTLS implementation. The system can provide real time job ordering in terms of load balancing using the information on location, in regards to the movement of yard tractors. This study will present the practical feasibility of RTLS, which can ultimately reduce the congestion of Hot Queues in container terminals. As a result, container terminals can be more productive and competitive. In order to accomplish the purpose of this study, we examined previous studies on the competitiveness of container terminals and summarized the potential of RTLS using RFID. In addition, we identified the role of yard tractors and proposed the two rules of Dynamic Planning for the yard tractors. We then fulfilled computational experiments on how yard tractors carrying containers by RTLS ordering Finally, the benefits and the implications of this study are discussed.
In order to measure the performance of resources in a port container terminal, we conducted a state transition network simulation to model various equipment processes. The processes that container cranes and transfer cranes perform are idle, wait, move, and work. Vehicles perform idle, wait, empty travel, and full travel. Because cranes, vehicles, and vessels are movable entities and all equipment is classified as either a customer or server, we separated the various stages of the process based upon the state transition network To validate the simulation results, a real system was used to illustrate the use of various measurements using the state transition network.

Container vessels are required to have a large KMT to load many containers which requires a wide transom stern form. The wide transom stern generates large stern waves particularly at the scantling draft. This means that reducing the stern wave leads to resistance reduction. Numerical analyses and Model tests for duck-tail of the stern part have been performed to reduce the resistance of the container vessel having the wide transom on the scantling draft and optimize the form of duck-tail with the change of the design parameter i.e. length and edge height. The optimized duck-tail increases the speed by 0.8 % at scantling draft.
A yard in a container terminal is a temporary storage space before containers are loaded onto the target vessel or delivered to consignees. For improving the utilization of the space in the yard and the efficiency of loading and discharging operations, it is important that operation plans must be carefully constructed in advance. A heuristic method is suggested to solve operation space planning problems considering workloads on handling equipment as well as space availabilities. The operation plans in this paper includes quay crane (QC) schedules and space plans for multiple vessels considering the workload in the container yard of container terminals. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a space planning method and the performance of a new QC scheduling method using a simulation model.

Generally, container carrier has larger engine than other commercial vessels and the engine casing is located in accommodation space. Therefore, the noise levels of cabins and engine room could be exceeded the specified noise limits and might be an annoyance to crews, and which can result in poor ship quality. Main subject of this study is to predict noise levels of the 4,500 TED container carrier by statistical energy analysis method in order to comply with contracted noise limits and to compare with the measured values. Additionally, through the contribution analysis of noise sources to each cabins, and appropriate countermeasures are proposed and the reduction effect of each noise control measure is studied by the analysis method. This study will contribute to reduce the noise levels of similar vessel.

The drop impact analysis was carried out on Type 4 pressure containers, and the degree of damage to the falling environment was predicted and determined using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) techniques. The purpose of the design and the optimization process of the winding pattern of the pressure vessel of the composite material is to verify the safety of the container in actual use. Finally, an interpretation process that can be implemented in accordance with domestic test standards can be established to reduce the cost of testing and containers through pre-test interpretation. The research on the fall analysis of pressure vessels of composite materials was conducted using Abaqus, and optimization was conducted using ISIGHT. As a result, the safety of composite pressure vessels in the falling environment was verified.

The concept of the Mobile Harbor had been made recently as a kind of feeder vehicle to transfer a certain amount of container boxes (i.e. 250 TEU at a time) from main ocean container vessels over 5,000 TEU capacity to the container terminal on land. In a harbor a short distance apart from the land, the container loading/unloading operation has to be performed on the main deck of the Mobile Harbor using the container cranes in the state of side-by-side mooring with protection of fenders and robot arms in the gap. Even under the ocean condition of the sea state class 2 or 3, the operation has to be confirmed to be safely performed. In this situation, the floating bodies considering the multiple-body interaction effect also has to be examined whether they might behave safely or not. Especially, this study focuses on the dynamic behavior of the Mobile harbor when a container box is hanged on the crane and the impact load due to the slewing motion is imposed in a certain sea state. The motion response should be controlled within the motion level to assure the safe operation.
Container terminals keenly compete with one another because of the continuous increase of container flows and the appearance of large-sized vessels. Major cargo handling equipment manufacturers are interested in the development of new conceptual equipment to greatly increase its productivity. In this study, a two-phase procedure is suggested for selecting the optimal development alternatives, when various development alternatives for container cranes are given. The first phase removes the alternatives that violate essential requirements and the second phase selects final alternatives by the evaluation of experts and the linear assignment method. Finally, a case applying the procedure is provided.
