  • A CHS(Container Handling System) is a system to load and to unload ISO 2000 or ISO 4000 standard containers which is widely used for various industrial transport purpose. A new light type of CHS is introduced in this paper, in order to reduce weight of cargos and to give the convenience in cargo loading and unloading without additional lifting equipments. The structural models of this system are created to assemble the smooth integration of system and to interface the each composing units with the specification of truck chassis to be mounted. These models are applied to find the suitable design parameters under the condition of force restrictions of each units. Finally, the stability of this system are investigated by analyzing the dynamic simulation using Visual NASTRAN 4D, and it could be recommend the good design parameters for the manufacturing purpose.

  • The problem of automated stacking cranes (ASC) dispatching in container terminals is addressed in this paper. We propose a heuristic-based ASC dispatching approach which adopts multi-criteria decision strategy. By aggregating different criteria the proposed strategy can consider multiple aspects of the dispatching situation and make robust decision in various situations. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) is adopted to tune the weights associated to each criteria to minimize both the quay crane delay and external truck delay. The proposed approach is validated by comparison with different dispatching heuristics and simulation results obtained confirms its effectiveness.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency of two yard layout of HSS at container terminal, one is that the container yard blocks are placed horizontally in parallel with berth, the other is that the yard blocks are arranged vertically in perpendicular to the berth. In stevedoring system of container terminal, stacking and transport performance are influenced according to block arrangement type of yard. Therefore, efficient design that can improve stacking and transport performance is required. In this paper, we compared their efficiency of two block arrangement concepts in terms of storage capacity, productivity, facility investments, truck service level.

  • The Port of Pusan, the largest port in Korea, handled 23% of total sea borne cargo movement, 14% of imported cargo, 58% of exported cargo and 95% of container cargo in 1989. Also the port of Pusan has been played a key role in handing container cargo throughout the last 10 years. The paper is aimed to survey the effect of sea borne cargo movement to urban transportation, that is, to find traffic volume arising by general/bulk cargoes through the port and to estimate vehicle rated of container tractor tailer on the roads between terminal including conventional piers and ODCY, and finally the following results are obtained. (1) AADV of truck to transport general/bulk cargoes are 6,322 units in 1989,and routes penetrate into the center of city and pass through the most of urban arterials. (2) In the container transport, if HVEF is adopted to 3 of tractor trailer, AVR in each transport freeway 13.7%. (3) IF HVEF is adopted to 6 of tractor trailer. AVR are as follows: BooDoo-Ro 44.1%, WooAm-Ro 39.3%, SooYoung-Ro 17.8%, Urban freeway 20.3%. Based upon these results, the following suggestions were drawn : o ODCY scattered around the city should be unified in a few groups to raise port productivity. o Rail service for inland container transportation should be escalated to relieve urban traffic congestion. o Coastal feeder service between terminal and hinterland should be studied to restrict the penetration of container tractor trailer into the central parts in the urban areas. o Exclusive freeway system for effective container transportation should be implemented to reduce urban traffic delay.

  • This study was performed to analyze the operation system of transfer crone to improve the reality of yard operation roles in container terminal and present the applicable method of operation rules to apply the operation priority. And we derived the procedure to estimate the maximum number of waiting truck based on the waiting of truck and the occupancy of driving lane in yard, and analyzed the constraint state of space. To solve the space constraint, we provided a multi-job principle to define the space resource and described the solution and sequence diagram for the principle.

  • In light of the growing traffic congestion problem and congestion cost, the container transport by railway has to be increased. The freight transport by railway can have decided advantages over trucks in terms of energy efficiency, emissions and cost for certain freight movements, just as transportation in the metropolitan region can have great advantages over driving truck. But the freight transport by truck should gain significant mobility benefits from a freight railway system. Thus, the DMT(Dual Mode Trailer) transport system which is coupled railway transport advantages with load transport advantages has been developed and used in the european countries. The DMT transport will therefore serve the areas required by transport organizers. This paper describes the various DMT transport systems and its strength and weakness.

  • A recent trend of increasing container traffic volume using reefer container demands continuous management of reefer container in transit. However, reefer containers can only be monitored at terminal or in ship during marine transportation instead of throughout entire section. In the case of inland transportation section using truck or train, monitoring is not possible currently. The reason is because the reefer container monitoring method using PCT recommended by IMO and conventional monitoring methods using TCP/IP, RFID communication require establishing additional communication infrastructure. This paper will propose a new reefer container control device that not only solves these problems and monitors during inland transportation section but also controls reefer container. Using data port attached to every reefer container, the proposed device collects the information of reefer container and using M2M communication technology, it transmits information to server without the need to establish additional communication infrastructure. In addition, it can control the operational status of reefer container upon receiving control information set in server such as temperature of reefer container.

  • In this study, a gate simulation model was developed to reduce the truck waiting time for trucking companies servicing container terminals. To verify the developed model, 4 weeks of truck gate-in/gate-out data was collected in December 2014 at the Port of Busan New Port. Also, the existing gate system was compared to the proposed gate system using the developed simulation model. The result showed that based on East gate-in, a maximum number of 50 waiting trucks with a maximum waiting time of 120 minutes. With the proposed system the maximum number of waiting trucks was 10 with a maximum waiting time of 5.3 minutes. Based on West gate-in, the maximum number of waiting trucks was 17 and the maximum waiting time was 34 minutes in the existing gate system. With the proposed system the maximum number of waiting trucks was 10 with a maximum waiting time of 5.3 minutes. Based on West gate-out, the maximum number of waiting trucks was 11 with a maximum waiting time of 5.5 minutes. With the proposed system the maximum number of waiting trucks was 9 with a maximum waiting time of 4.4 minutes. This developed model shows how many waiting trucks there are, depending on the gate-in/gate-out time of each truck. This system can be used to find optimal gate system operating standards by assuming and adjusting the gate-in/gate-out time of each truck in different situations.

  • To reduce the vibrations and shocks during the cargo transportation of high value-added goods, the vibration history was measured on the truck transportation section (Asan-Uiwang) and the freight train transportation section (Uiwang-Pusan). The internal vibrations of the container were obtained by attaching acceleration sensors in three axis directions (longitudinal, lateral. and vertical directions) on the front and rear bogies. The rail vibration profile (0.29Grms) proposed in ASTM D-4169 was approximately 50% higher than the truck vibration profile (0.54Grms). The overall vibration was 16% and 33 % lower in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, compared to the ASTM truck transport vibration profile. On the other hand, the vertical vibration measurement history partially exceeded the ASTM truck transport vibration profile over the range, 4 - 15Hz, and over 60Hz. The vibration measurement history of the cargo train was similar to that of the road. The longitudinal and lateral vibration history was lower than the ASTM D-4169 rail vibration profile, while the vertical history was over 30Hz.
