  • Port development has been remarkably increasing due to the progress of industrialization in ASEAN area. Especially, Vietnam has increased the international physical distribution in this area rapidly. The main issues facing decision makers at container terminals in Vietnam are how to expand the existing container terminals and construct new container terminals. In this paper, we performed the basic design based on simulation analysis in order to support the expansion of Quy Nhon port in Vietnam as a case study. The preliminary capacity analysis was conducted on the one berth at the port to analyze the scale of C/C(Container Crane)and yard area. Alternative scenarios were created based on the preliminary capacity analysis and the detailed simulation analysis was conducted for supporting the scenarios.

  • This study examined elements which could evaluate a container terminal logistics system from the viewpoint of supply chain management. This study derived the elements of a container terminal logistics system such as flexibility, reliability, responsiveness, and information sharing and 16 evaluation sub-items in the aspect of a supply chain. In the result of analysis, the weight between SCM elements of a container terminal logistics system was the highest in reliability(0.282), followed by flexibility(0.273), responsiveness(0.224), and information sharing(0.221). The conversion weight was calculated by combining the weight of elements of a container terminal logistics system and the weight of evaluation sub-items. The highest weight which was considered as the most important factor to evaluate a container terminal logistics system was work planning(berth, yard) of flexibility(0.081), followed by accurate fulfillment of container work schedule(ship, yard) and the optimum distribution and arrangement of equipment(QC, TC, YT)(0.079), stable works without damage of containers and ships(0.071), and preventive maintenance of equipment and operators' skill(0.070).

  • The export of the containers consists of two steps, carrying them into the container yard and, then, out to the ship. For the safety of the ship, the heavier container should be loaded at the lower part of the ship. Because of this, the container rehandling happens during carrying out to the ship, and the number of the rehandling container is an important factor for the loading and unloading capability. There has been many studies for utilizing the idle times after loading the containers in the container yard. This study suggests the method of decreasing the number of container rehandling by preprocessing the container using the information about the weight of the container. This method is the preprocessing one which can decrease, during carrying into the container yard, the number of container rehandling which can happen during carrying out to the ship, and, according to the simulation test, it showed to be more effective than other method.

  • This aims to independent operation system for ATC which works for a yard in a container terminal automatically. Many intelligent algorithms have been developed and studied for TOS - Terminal Operation System - in existing container terminals. So, TOS has been getting overloaded for development, maintenance, and repair. Moreover, if new equipment are introduced for container terminal, the TOS for container terminal would be renewed whole system. Despite of its necessity, studies have been introduced insufficiently. As a result, this paper represents the concept of independent which connects between TOS and equipments so that it can perform planning, indicating, monitoring, control and etc.

  • In this study, we consider the transportation problem in port container terminals. It aims to determine positions in yards to place the containers at the adequate times. The containers on ship must be unloaded one by one from top to bottom, and placed in the main yard in order to reduce additional cost required for unnecessary unloading when getting out by customer with given timetable. The cost for transportation at container terminals could be reduced by a new approach in scheduling: move the containers from ship and stack them onto main yard that minimizes cost of yard crane operation when unloading for customer.

  • Due to the international economic downturn and the increasing competition, container terminals have been trying to achieve cost effectiveness and high service levels. Shipping companies want to get better services from container terminals but container terminals only have limited space and equipment. Frequently, too many external trucks come to the terminal at the same time, and create bottle necks at the terminals. Ouside the container terminals traffic jams occur as well. As a result, stakeholders need a vehicle booking system. By VBS, container terminals can plan efficiently in advance to avoid work delay and the truck drivers can finish their jobs quickly. This paper aims to search efficient models for the container terminals by using VBS.

  • Container terminal yards operate under a high degree of uncertainty as the contact point between inbound and outbound operations of vessels and external trucks. The layout, equipment operations. and job orders at the yards determine the efficacy and delays of the work, so many studies have investigated improvements in efficiency. H company, a container terminal operator developed an index called WDI to distribute work among RTGCs. The WDI is an indicator to prevent congestion in one place by equally distributing the work to each RTGC. This paper analyzes the effect of the WDI introduction and discusses the causes and results of the WDI introduction effect from quantitative and qualitative perspectives.

  • Yard cranes are very useful equipments for handling of heavy containers. But rope-driven yard cranes must have a little of sway and skew motion because ropes are passive mechanical device. So many researches have been concentrated on anti-sway algorithm controlling trolley speed. But control algorithm of trolley speed is not practical in windy weather. In this paper, we are going to propose a new structure for anti-sway. This structure uses aux. ropes. The control strategy with auxiliary rope is very useful to sway control of yard crane because rope length is shorter than quay-side container cranes. In this paper, we derive equations of motion of trolley system which have anti-sway controller to use auxiliary rope. And main schemes are introduced and explained briefly.

  • This paper is concerned about applying the AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) for a priority analysis of equipment operation plan to improve productivity of the container terminal in Gwangyang port. In this study, main elements of container terminal are assumed as into yard equipment area, transport equipment area, berth equipment area and C/Center area. A questionnaire is used to collect the opinions of equipment operating department and operational planning department. On the whole, the result of the analyses reveals that the most important area is yard equipment area. Examining each department is responses, equipment operating department preferred the C/Center area to other areas, on the other hand, operational planning department preferred yard equipment area. The result of this study suggests some guidelines for deciding priority of operation plan in the container terminal.
