LCL Cargo Loading Algorithm Considering Cargo Characteristics and Load Space (화물의 특성 및 적재 공간을 고려한 LCL 화물 적재 알고리즘)

  • The demand for Less than Container Load (LCL) has been on the rise due to the growing need for various small-scale production items and the expansion of the e-commerce market. Consequently, more companies in the International Freight Forwarder are now handling LCL. Given the variety in cargo sizes and the diverse interests of stakeholders, there's a growing need for a container loading algorithm that optimizes space efficiency. However, due to the nature of the current situation in which a cargo loading plan is established in advance and delivered to the Container Freight Station (CFS), there is a limitation that variables that can be identified at industrial sites cannot be reflected in the loading plan. Therefore, this study proposes a container loading methodology that makes it easy to modify the loading plan at industrial sites. By allowing the characteristics of cargo and the status of the container to be considered, the requirements of the industrial site were reflected, and the three-dimensional space was manipulated into a two-dimensional planar layer to establish a loading plan to reduce time complexity. Through the methodology presented in this study, it is possible to increase the consistency of the quality of the container loading methodology and contribute to the automation of the loading plan.

  • Container Freight Station(CFS), which would be located inside terminal or outside, plays the role of consolidating less than container load(LCL) cargo gathered from multi shippers and deconsolidating full container load cargo into individual consignment. When CFS is allocated inside terminal it muses several problem such as traffic gam around terminal, high social and logistics cost and deterioration of terminal condition. This study, therefore, tries to evaluate the location of CFS, inside and outside of terminal, with respect to the social and logistics costs.

  • In 1991, Korean government decided to establish the Inland Container Depot for activating transportation of rail freight container and encourage the effectiveness of intermodal transport system. Therefore, the Ui-Wang ICD has been built in Kyonggi province and began to operate in 1993. However, Despite of original purpose of the Inland Container Depot, rail freight volume at public CY(Container Yard) in Ui-Wang ICD has been recorded very low. This paper deals with the promotion strategy for rail transport in Ui-Wang ICD. The relationship of conflicts between the rail-oriented transporters and road-oriented transporters in Ui-Wang ICD have been found through the TOC thinking process and some solutions are suggested. Some undesirable effects in operation of Ui-Wang ICD are listed and current reality tree(CRT) has been established and future reality tree(FRT) which includes some injections to active the rail transport in ICD has been recommended based on CRT. In order to make good solutions the situation in Busan-jin station ICD known as similar to Ui-Wang ICD has been analyzed.

  • The railroad freight transport has great merits that can transport mass and specific items(dangerous goods), but it takes a long time because of low accessibility to the logistics facility and the complex process of loading freight in middle station. This paper analyzed volumes and characters of each railroad freight item, and was carried out the effect of applying E&S system to Gyeongbu line containers to find the method of reducing transport time and effective container transportation. As a result of Cost-Effectiveness analysis, the block train(B/T) is reducing transport time more about 1~2 hours. The road congestion cost is saving about 2.2 billion won. And due to skipping work of organizing train, personnel and equipment expenses savings expected about 9 billion won. It is expected that the E&S system enhances the container transport service and has an effect positive influence on making a efficient method of transport. But It is necessary to estimate pre-feasibility of applying E&S system that the standard of estimating cost and benefit is required further examination.

  • In this paper, we propose the effective operating device in the container freight station by applying the RTLS (Real Time Location System) that provides information on the container's location in real time so that the performance of the port operating system can be improved. For this, we proposed the improved dual cycling method made with the new application of two types of container's location & yard tractor's location information. we applied the RTLS to the container freight station to send the container location data to the operating system in real time; we designed the data on the Yard Tractor's location to be received via the GPS receiver and then be sent to the operating system in real time via the CDMA module. According to the analysis and evaluation of the performance of the proposed method, up to 24% of performance improvement was shown compared with the existing methods, in aspect of evaluation of work time, work time deviation and performance. Therefore, we proved that the RTLS and the GPS receiver are essential elements for efficient port operation.

  • Because the transport policy of Korea has overemphasized road, the physical distribution function of railroad has dwindled a great deal relatively. Recently, the railway has started to be embossed due to the rise of oil prices and environment problems, in addition the government is investing greatly in railroad. The railway corporation took a big step in its history in changing to a public corporation in 2005, and it has been making every possible endeavor to improve management. This research analyzed the trend and stability of the efficiency of railway container handling goods station in korea from 2002 to 2007 based on time of after being changed to a public corporation in 2005 in order to look into the trend of efficiency. The DEA- AR(Data Envelopment Analysis-Assurance Region) and the DEA-Window, widely used as the estimation techniques of the efficiency, were used. According to the results, the efficiency was a little enhanced in 2003 in comparison with 2002, after which it continuously decreased up to 2006 and again rose in 2007. The efficiency of the railway corporation was 0.6777, but after changing to a public corporation, it showed a trend of better efficiency after some transition period had passed.

A Study on the Revitalization of Yangsan ICD (양산 ICD 활성화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Yangsan ICD (Inland Container Depot) has played an important role for Busan Port and Korea's port & logistics industries, increasing international logistics competitiveness and containers' transportation competitiveness in Busan region dealing with 1330 thousand TEU in 2005, since its opening in March 2000. However, it is necessary to seek new measures to revitalize Yangsan ICD, since its cargo volume decreased rapidly owing to the opening of Busan New Port and hinterland in 2006. This study constructed an evaluation model using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and conducted a survey targeting local businesses and persons concerned in Yangsan ICD to seek measures for revitalization. The results suggest that Yangsan ICD needs to switch functions to logistics centers (terminal facilities, logistics warehouse) for revitalization considering its advantage of facility location. Moreover, by extending the utilization period and securing building-to-land ratio, existing and new businesses' stable activity should be guaranteed. Furthermore, utilizing facilities such as the railway station in ICD, an active railway revitalization policy may increase cargo volume. Yangsan ICD should perform its role as an inland logistics depot through the revitalization of railway freight transportation in the national logistics system focusing on road freight transportation.

Analysis of Wireless Network in Freight Container Terminal and Methods for Service Quality Enhancement (컨테이너 터미널의 무선 네트워크 분석과 서비스 품질 향상 방안)

  • The number of industry wireless networks based on IEEE 802.11 WLAN technology deployed in large outdoor work sites, such as freight container terminal, is increasing these days. Wider service coverage, frequent movements of stations and high requirement on service reliability are main characteristics of these networks compared to the conventional IEEE 802.11 networks used in home, office and school. While the importance of these networks Bets higher, we can hardly find previous studies including concrete analysis on these networks based on actual experiments. We carried out several field experiments at a freight container terminal to analyze its IEEE 802.11 network and found out some problematic situations, such as over 50% retransmission rates and frequent disruption of communication link while a station is moving. We explain why these problematic situations happen and suggest some solutions, such as application of mesh technology, smart handoff based on location and movement pattern and adjustment of signal strength and channel allocation. Methods and tools used in the experiments are also detailed in the paper which may be helpful for similar future studies.
