Asian container market, expecially in the NEA(Northeast Asia) region, has been growing continuously according to international specialization of manufacturers. The circumstances surrounding port industry has also been changing rapidly. Global liner and GTO( Global Terminal Operators} have strengthen there market share with M&A and increased entry to Asia market. The competition in NEA have deepen with change of circumstance and the growth of Chinese ports while Busan port decreasing its growth rate and market share. Therefore, this study analysed the change of the port concentration in NEA and the positioning of Busan port by year. In the result, the competitive position of Busan port weakening continuously and loss much volume to competition port, and it suggests that a globalization strategy is essential for making sure of competitiveness based on the result of this paper.
The ports have been confronted with rapid environmental changes. This means that it is imperative to enhance the competitiveness by resolving the chronic and difficult problems regarding Busan New Port. This paper, hence, suggests how to activate the hinterland of the New Port. The New Port was designed to become a leading logistics port in Northeast Asia and its economic ripple effect was expected to be much greater with the construction of New Port Hinterland. The government should also seek to supply the sufficient land as well as establish port clusters with various port-related industries, which enables the New Port to survive the forthcoming harsh environmental changes and meet the diverse demands. Those measures also enable the New Port to overcome the deterioration of the competitiveness and enjoy the economies of scale. The cluster-based hinterland policy framework is sure to be very efficient but should be complemented with infrastructure policies for the better policy-mix.

LMTT (Linear Motor-based Transfer Technology) is the horizontal transfer system for yard automation, which has been proposed to take the place of AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) in the maritime container terminal. The system is based on PMLSM (Permanent Magnetic Linear Synchronous Motor) that consists of stator modules on the rail and shuttle car. It is desirable to reduce the weight of LMTT in order to control the electronic devices with minimum energy. In this research, structural optimization for a mover of shuttle car is performed to minimize the weight satisfying design criteria. The objective function is set up as weight. On the contrary, the design variables are transverse, longitudinal and wheel beams' thicknesses and its height, and the constraints are considered as strength and stiffness.

This work aims to introduce the concept of microcomputer aided port design simulation methodology including the analysis of the mathematical models to be implemented and apply it to the Third Stage Busan Part Development Project. In the Busan case study the size of the proposed turning basin of the new terminal together with the operational stra-tegies of berthing and unberthing was examined In addition the safety of ships' entry and exit through the projection new breakwaters was as-certained. From the application of simulation to the Busan project it was found that the proposed dredging area was not sufficiently wide enough for a modelled container ship to perform A type unberthing (in which the ship turns to port as she monoeuvres away from No.1 berth with the ass-istance of tuges) especially in a strong easterly wind., It is therefore recommended that Busan pilots should be advised to use B type unberthing strategy in which the ship goes astern from No.1 berth to the turning area in front of No.2 berth(where the ship turns 180 degrees clockwise) especially when the wind is very strong. It is also recommended that a sea buoy be placed outside the new breakwaters as this was found to im-prove the safety of ship manoeuvres through the breakwaters significant-ly. Another recommendation is that the Korean Hydrodynamic Office carry out a detailed survey of the currents in the water area near the new breakwaters. once they have been constructed. In addition it is to be recommended that a current meter be placed at the recommended sea buoy pardised by erroneous current information
Most metropolitan shippers (MS) have used trans pacific route (TPR) or Asia-Europe route (AEP) through Busan port (BP). If Incheon new port (INP) sets up the deep water-depths under -16m, however, there might be a change in MS's port choice behavior (PCB). In this respect, the aim of this paper is to estimate an INP's allotment rate for metropolitan cargo using Logit Model (LM) considering changing global shipping and port environment. This paper reviews previous studies related to shippers' PCB then sets up the utility function (UF) including the dummied dependent variable which is comprised of BP and INP, and some independent variables such as the frequency of liner shipping route (TPR), inland transportation fare, and the rate of container terminal service. As a result of LM analysis, BP has 0.6618 and INP has 0,3382.

As the ubiquitous environment is created, the latest ports introduce U-Port services in managing ports generally and embody container's location identification system, port terminal management system, and advanced information exchange system etc. In particular, the location identification system for freight cars and containers provide in real time the information on the location and condition for them, and enables them to cope with an efficient vehicle operation management and its related problems immediately. However, such a system is insufficient in effectively handling with the troubles in a large-scale port including freight car's disorderly driving, parking, stop, theft, damage, accident, trespassing and controlling. In order to solve these problems, this study structures the vehicle positioning system and the image verification system unsing high resolution image compression and AVE/H.264 store and transmission technology, able to mark and identify the vehicle location on the digital map while a freight car has stayed in a port since the entry of an automatic gate, or able to identify the place of accident through image remotely.

Despite the significance of ports as critical economic infrastructure, the berth facilities usually deteriorate due to heavy loading, unloading, aging, environmental weather conditions, marine growths, and lack of efficient maintenance management. Marine berths require proactive maintenance management to limit deterioration and defects as no berth facility is maintenance-free. Thus, delay in carrying out maintenance work for the marine berths can be devastating to the operational process involving ship entry, loading, and unloading operations. The aim of this research is to coordinate both operations work, and maintenance works that take place inside the berth of a local industrial port in Saudi Arabia, by developing a novel framework that integrates both works without affecting the efficiency and functionality of the berth. The study focused on defining the operational process of the port and identifying the elements with direct and indirect effects. In addition to determining the priority for the entry of ships inside the berth, it also identified the factors involved in designing a framework that included maintenance work as a component of the monthly berth occupancy schedule. By applying a mathematical model, a framework was established, which includes all the important elements of the process. As a result of the mathematical method formulation process, a database was designed that organizes and coordinates the operations of all berths within the port. This creates time to carry out the required maintenance work monthly as well as ease of coordination with the contractors responsible for the implementation of those works.
Recently, the lateral displacement of the passive piles which are installed under the revetment on the soft ground is very important during the land reclamation work along the coastal line. The revetment on the soft clay develops the lateral displacement of ground when the revetment loading exceeds a certain limit. The lateral displacement of ground causes an excessive deformation of underground structure itself and develops lateral earth pressure against the pile foundation. The subject of study is to investigate the lateral displacement of pile foundation during the construction of container terminal at the ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ port in Incheon. The displacement of pile and the vertical settlement were measured in the field and finite element method(FEM) analysis for each construction sequence was performed using AFFIMEX(Ver 3.4). From the comparison of the results from field measurement and the finite element analysis, the settlement of the reventment has already occurred at the time of field measurements. Since then, the noticeable lateral displacement of piles and settlement were occurred during the filling of dredged soil inside the revetment dredging and reclaiming work. After completing filling, the lateral displacement and field settlement were reduced remarkably. Generally, the results from the finite element analysis show larger than those from the measurement.
Today's individual firms no longer compete as solely autonomous entities, but rather as supply chain. As such the competitive position of a port is not only determined by its internal strengths but also it is also affected by its links in a global supply chin. In other words, port competitiveness is becoming increasingly dependent on external coordination and control of the whole supply chain. The main purpose of this paper is to examine how a port embeds itself into supply chain in order to strengthen its competitive position by focusing on Dubai port case. This paper found that Dubai port used three phases-insertion, integration and dominance-as a strategies for how it can embedded into global supply chain successfully. Dubai's global supply chain strategies give some implications for the further development of the Port of Gwangyang. First, the Port of Gwangyang should fully utilize symbiotic relationship with Gwangyang free Economic Zone. Second, the integration between Korea Container Terminal Authority and GYFEZ can be recommended for fast decision-making and providing a one-stop-service. Finally, Gwangyang should pursue an aggressive supply chain strategy, aims at dominance in the regional port network through port alliance with small and medium ports in neighboring area.

Manila Bay is home to the Port of Manila with three harbors: North Harbor, South Harbor and MICT(Manila International container Terminal). There is an adjacent fishing port to the north and another port across the Bay, the Limao Port. This study focuses on the volume of traffic movement in the Bay area taken from Manila VTMS raw data of the arrival and departure movements only. It is a two-year period of study of 2010 and 2011 traffic volume. It divides the data according to their numbers; to their sizes measured in gross tons; to the time of vessels' movements, whether daytime or night-time; and to each voyage trade: domestic or foreign. Quantitative values are calculated from the raw data based on the whole population of the two-year period. The results are illustrated by tables and graphs. Statistical measures are applied to determine the spread and frequencies of the data and test any significance from the hypotheses. These are shown in the tabulated form and interpreted to give a better picture of the frequency and volume of traffic. In the end, a summary is offered where it is hoped that this paper will propel further studies of improving the safety behavior in the premier port of the country.
