Container Flow Management in Port Logistics Based on BPM Framework

  • To promote process effectiveness and efficiency, it is necessary that port logistics employ automated equipments for handling containers. There exists a system for automatically managing the container flow, called Control Module. However, it has limitation to assign the execution order to the machine and monitor the container flow in real time process. Business process management (BPM) provides a suitable and effective framework to address this problem including controlling and monitoring the flow of each container. Since the nature of container handling process is different with the common process in BPM that is conducted by human performer, it is necessary to adjust the BPM framework in the domain of port logistic management. This study presents a BPM framework corresponds with both human-based and machine-based activity to enhance the efficiency of port process flow including container flow. This framework is introduced as an integrated approach and mechanism of BPM application into the container handling system for the purpose of port logistics process automation.

  • Since world container throughput continues to grow, the main issues facing decision-makers at port container terminals are how to expand the existing container terminals and construct new container terminals. Simulations can be used in the decision making process tools due to its ease and ability to reflect the real world system. The object-oriented approach provides for both reusability and modularity that best fits these requirements. In this paper, the object-oriented approach to modeling and simulating general container terminals is presented. Simulation tools based on Visual C++ provide a user-friendly input and output environment through the use of an object class-library. This paper also presents the case study of a simulation of a real container terminal in Pusan, Korea.

  • Recently, the role of container ports is radically changing. These changes are largely driven by the innovation process of Logistics such as Supply Chain Logistics and Global Logistics due to the international expansion of industry. Under this environment, It is required that the container port should act as a integral part of a Supply Logistics Chain especially to provide the customer-oriented logistics service. This paper deals with the development strategy of container ports coping with these changes in the view point of container ports as a Logistics infrastructure to provide customer-response services and necessary to the economic promotion of hinterlands. Strategy is suggested in the phases of the customers desire, the pattern of container cargo, the economic promotion of hinterlands, and interrelation of container ports in north-east Asia and also domestics through the analysis of competiveness of container ports.

동종 항만군 분류를 통한 컨테이너항만의 운영효율화 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on Operation Efficiency of Container Port by Comparison of Similar Ports)

  • 본 연구는 경쟁상태에 있는 아시아 14개의 컨테이너 터미널을 항만시설 관련자료(시설, 시설가용성), 경제·사회 지표(인구, 1인당GNP), 항만서비스 관련자료(취항선사수), 그리고 컨테이너처리물동량 등에 의해 5개 항만군으로 분류한다. 분석방법으로는 평가자료가 실제 입력자료를 얼마나 잘 재현해 주는가를 나타내는 기준치인 스트레스값을 제시해 줌으로써 분석의 결과에 대한 적합도(Goodness of Fit)를 알 수 있는 다차원척도법을 이용한다. 5개 동종항만군의 분류를 통하여 부산항을 포함하여 아시아 각 항만들의 현 위치를 보다 세부적으로 파악할 수 있었으며, 동종항만으로 분류된 카오슝 항만과의 벤치마킹을 통해 부산항의 운영 효율성 증대를 위한 시사점을 제시하였다. 동종항만군의 분류 결과 카오슝 및 부산항만군은 다른 지표에 비해 항만기반시설이 부족한 것으로 분석되었다. 앞으로 이 항만군은 시설부문에 지속적인 투자가 이루어져야 할 필요가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 부산항은 낮은 생산성의 원인을 밝혀 해결책을 모색하고. 항만기반시설 중 선석수, 안벽길이, 야드 공간 등을 확장하는 데 투자할 필요가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

부산항 컨테이너 전용 터미널 운영 개선을 위한 연구 (A Study on the Operational Improvement at Pusan Container Terminal)

  • In this paper, we compare and analyze the current state of the productivity of the stevedoring work among several container terminals in 1999. Based on these results of analysis, we firstly classify several factors which impede the efficient operations of container terminal as follows ; late arrival of container beyond cargo closing time(CCT), change of port of destination, change of vessel, and return cargo. Such factors are major cause for the cargo rehandling on terminals, thus deteriorate the overall performance of transfer crane during the stevedoring work. In order to improve the productivity of container terminal, we suggest that it is necessary for establishing and operating the efficient logistics management system. Especially, we emphasize the importance of information exchange on the scheduled cargoes among the relevant parties such as shippers, shipping companies, and terminal operators, which is the most effective way to alleviate the cargo rehandling.

부산항 컨테이너 물류 시스템 분석에 관하여 (On the Analysis of Container Physical Distribution System in Pusan Port)

  • A Container terminal is a physical link between the ocean and land modes of transport and a major component of the container physical distribution system. A number of projects to increase terminal productivity in the world were found to be tied directly to increasing the efficiency of the intermodal activities, that is, to improving the physical distribution process. This is an indication that the productivity of container terminal is being considered withing a system prospective. The purpose of this study is to establish a model of the container physical distribution system for Pusan port linked with 4 sub-systems including Navigational aids system, Cargo handling/transfer/storage system on dock, Off-dock CY system and In-land transport connection system. and to analyze the system. From this analysis, we found that the system had three bottlenecks on the container physical distribution process in Pusan port : a) cargo handling b) storage and c) inland transport, and showed a way to improve the system.

  • Container port is one of the most vital link of the transportation chain that plays an important role in trading with other countries. Having a proper understanding of port operations could change the role of the port from a transportation node to an efficient point in a transportation chain. Development of transportation chains, logistics and progress of these networks have enhanced the sustainable condition and level of transportation. Therefore, evaluating the competitiveness of ports is obligatory for port users to make a decision in investment or exploitation. This paper introduces the use of Fuzzy C-means and TOPSIS for competitiveness comparison among a sample of container terminals in Korea and China and determine how to improve Korean port competitiveness and particularly in Busan port.

Estimation on the Port Container Volume in Incheon Port

  • This paper estimated the container volumes for the Incheon port with univariate time series. As best suited models Winters' additive model, ARIMA model,and Winters' additive model were selected by import-export, coastal, and transshipment volume respectively, based on the data of monthly volume by October 2008 since January 2001. This study supposed the import-export container volumes would be decreased by 14% against that in 2008 and would have been recovered to the increasing trend of the volumes beyond the fourth quarter of 2010. The future import-export and transshipment volumes showed the increasing trend beyond 2011, while the coastal volumes would be on the stagnation. The yearly container volumes were finally forecasted as 1,705, 2,432, and 3,341 thousand TEU in 2011, 2015, and 2020 respectively.

  • Port development is remarkable increased due to the progress of industrialization in ASEAN area. Especially, Vietnam has increased the international physical distribution in this area rapidly. The main issues facing decision makers at container terminals in Vietnam are how to expand the existing container terminals and construct new container terminals. In this paper, we performed the basic design based on simulation analysis in order to support the expansion of Quy Nhon port in Vietnam as a case study. The preliminary capacity analysis was conducted on the one berth at the port to analyze the scale of C/C and yard area. Alternative scenarios were created based on the preliminary capacity analysis and the detailed simulation analysis was conducted fur the scenarios. And in order to establish the marketing strategy, we classified the marketing elements by industrial environment and performed SWAT analysis of the port.

사회연결망 분석을 이용한 컨테이너 정기선 항로 패턴 분석에 관한 연구 : 부산항을 중심으로 (A Study on Analysis of Container Liner Service Routes Pattern Using Social Network Analysis : Focused on Busan Port)

  • 항만산업은 수출입 중심인 우리나라의 경제구조에서 중요한 국가기간산업이라 할 수 있다. 특히 국내 컨테이너 물동량의 75%를 처리하는 부산항은 지속적으로 글로벌 선사 물동량 유치를 위해 정기선 항로 서비스를 확대하는 노력 등 컨테이너 정기선 항로에 대한 중요도가 높아질 것으로 예상된다. 본 연구는 사회연결망 분석을 활용하여 2012년부터 2016년까지 부산항을 기항하는 컨테이너 정기선 항로 패턴 분석을 통해 세계 주요항만과의 중심성을 파악하여 부산항과 연결되어 있는 항만 네트워크의 구조적인 특성을 파악하였다. 부산항 컨테이너 정기선 항로 네트워크상에 연결정도 중심성, 근접중심성, 매개중심성이 높은 항만은 싱가포르항으로 분석되었으며, 실제 연도별 부산항 주요 국가 항만별 처리물동량 순위와 부산항 컨테이너 정기선 항로 네트워크 중심성 분석 결과 간 순위 비교는 서로 상이한 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 부산항 처리 물동량의 높은 비율을 차지하고 있는 중국 동부항만이 부산항 컨테이너 정기선 네트워크상에서 보았을 때 부산항의 허브항으로 보기 어렵다는 점을 확인하였다. 또한 부산항 컨테이너 정기선 서비스 항로 수는 증가하더라도 해당 항로에 투입되는 선박이 중소형으로 한정되어 있거나 네트워크상 부산항이 싱가포르항 기항을 위한 피더항(Feeder Port)의 성격을 띄고 있는 것으로 추정된다.
