  • The ultrastructural characteristics of germ cell development during spermatogenesis and mature sperm morphology of in male Scapharca subcrenata were investigated by transmission electron microscope observation. Spermatogonia are located nearest the outer wall of the acinus, while spermatocytes and spermatids are positioned near the accessory cells. The accessory cells, which is in close contact with developing germ cells, contained a large quantity of glycogen particles and lipid droplets in the cytoplasm. Therefore, it is assumed that they are involved in supplying of the nutrients for germ cell development. The morphologies of the sperm nucleus and the acrosome of this species are the oval shape and cone shape, respectively. Spermatozoa are approximately 45-$50{\mu}m$ in length including a sperm nucleus (about $1.30{\mu}m$ in length), an acrosome (about $0.59{\mu}m$ in length), and tail flagellum (about 43-$47{\mu}m$). The axoneme of the sperm tail shows a 9 + 2 structure. As some characteristics of the acrosomal vesicle structures, the right and left basal rings show electron opaque part (region), and also the anterior apex part of the acrosomal vesicle shows electron opaque part (region). These characteristics of the acrosomal vesicle were found in Acinidae and other several families in subclass Pteriomorphia. These common characteristics of the acrosomal vesicle in subclass Pteriomorphia can be used for phylogenetic and taxonomic analysis as a taxonomic key or a significant tool. The number of mitochondria in the midpiece of the sperm of this species are five, as one of common characteristics appear in most species in Arcidae and other families in subclass Pteriomorphia. The acrosomal vesicles of Arcidae species do not contain the axial rod and several transverse bands in acrosome, unlkely as seen in Ostreidae species in subclass Pteriomorphia, These characteristics can be used for the taxonomic analysis of the family or superfamily levels as a systematic key or tools.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the changes of lens morphology and tear stability during wearing soft contact lenses (SCLs) which were kept in drying condition like dry eye or became to be dried due to heedless care. Method: SCLs having different water content, thickness or material were rehydrated after being dehydrated artificially 2 or 4 times, and estimated their diameter and radius. Furthermore, the changes of tear film break-up time (TBUT) during SCL wearing were also measured. Result: Due to the dryness, the diameter of both 70% water content SCL and 59% water content SCL decreased, but the decrement was larger in 59% water content SCL. The more 59% water content SCL was dehydrated, the more its radius changed. However, the radius of 70% water content SCL did not change by 2 times dehydration and increased greatly by 4 times dehydration. The reduction of diameter of -1.00 D SCL was greater than that of -9.00 D SCL. Moreover, the radius of -1.00 D SCL increased depending on the frequency of dehydration but that of -9.00 D SCL did not changed. The diameter and radius changes of lotrafilcon B, silicone hydrogel lens, were less than those of hilafilcon B, copolymer of HEMA and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. TBUT during wearing SCLs decreased by wearing dehydrated SCLs. Conclusion: The diameter and radius of dehydrated SCLs as well as TBUT during wearing them were changed in spite of rehydration, which would be the important cause of uncomfortable feeling when people wore dehydrated SCL. The changes of SCL morphology and TBUT differed according to the water content, lens thickness and material.

  • In this letter, we report on the investigation of Si/Ti, Pt/Si/Ti, Co/Si/Ti Ohmic contacts to p-type 4H-SiC. The contacts were formed by a 2-step vacuum annealing at $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 min respectively. The contact resistances were measured using the transmission line model method, which resulted in specific $10^{-4}{\Omega}cm^2$, and the physical properties of the contactcontact resistivities in the $9.2{\times}10^{-4}$, $7.1{\times}10^{-4}$ and $4.5{\times}s$ were examined using microscopy, AES(auger electron spectroscopy). AES analysis has shown that, at this anneal temperature, there was a intermixing of the Ti and Si, migration of into SiC. Overlayer of Pt, Co had the effect of decreasing the specific contact resistivity and improving the surface morphology of the annealed contact.

  • Superhydrophilic thin film consisted of positively charged poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and negatively charged poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) was fabricated by a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly. Glutaraldehyde (GA) was used in order to increase an adhesion hardness by amine-aldehyde reaction. The surface morphology, thickness, transmittance, water contact angle and adhesion hardness of PAH/PAA thin film with or without GA were measured. The adhesion hardness of PAH/PAA thin film with GA deposition increased over 2 times although the film thickness of PAH/GA/PAA decreased than that of PAH/PAA thin film. The increase of adhesion hardness by amine-aldehyde reaction between PAH and GA was measured by fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Fabricated PAH/PAA and PAH/GA/PAA thin films showed water contact angel under $5^{\circ}$ and high transmittance over 91.3% at 550 nm.

  • It has been shown that ion implantation produces remarkable improvements in surface-sensitive physical and chemical properties as well as other mechanical properties, in polymers. In this study, ion implantation was performed onto polymer, PC(polycarbonate), in order to investigate surface hydrophilic property through contact angle measurement using distilled water. PC was irradiated with N, Ar, Xe ions at the irradiation energy of $20\;{\sim}\;50keV$ and the dose range of $5{\times}10^{15},\;1{\times}10^{16},\;7{\times}10^{16}\;ions/cm^2$. The contact angle of water has been reduced with increasing fluence and ion mass but increased with increasing implanted energy. The changes of chemical and structural property are discussed in view of infrared spectroscopy and FT-IR, XPS, which shows increasing C-O bonding and C-C bonding. The root mean square of surface roughness examined by means of AFM changed smoothly from 0.387nm to 0.207nm and the change of wettability was discussed with respect to elastic and inelastic collisions obtained as results of TRIM simulation. It was found that wettability of the modified PC surface was affected on change of functional group and nuclear stopping or linear energy transfer(LET, energy deposited per unit track length per ion) that causes chain scission by displacing atom from polymer chains, but was not greatly dependant on surface morphology.

  • Submicron-scale patterns made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were fabricated on silicon-wafer using a capillarity-directed soft lithographic technique. Polyurethane acrylate (PUA) stamps (Master molds) were used to fabricate the patterns. Patterns with three different aspect ratios were fabricated by varying the holding time. The patterns fabricated were the negative replica of the master mold. The patterns so obtained were investigated for their adhesion and friction properties at nano-scale using AFM. Friction tests were conducted in the range of 0-80 nN. Glass (Borosilicate) balls of diameter 1.25 mm mounted on cantilever (Contact Mode type NPS) were used as tips. Further, micro-friction tests were performed using a ball-on-flat type micro-tribe tester, under reciprocating motion, using a soda lime ball (1 mm diameter) under a normal load of 3,000 mN. All experiments were conducted at ambient temperature ($24{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity ($45{\pm}5\%$). Results showed that the patterned samples exhibited superior tribological properties when compared to the silicon wafer and non-patterned sample (PMMA thin film) both at the nano and micro-scales, owing to their increased hydrophobicity and reduced real area of contact. In the case of patterns it was observed that their morphology (shape factor and size factor) was decisive in defining the real area of contact.

  • Water-repellent coating solutions were synthesized by hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions with water using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and chlorotrimethylsilane (CTMS) as precursors. The solutions were coated on a PMMA sheet and thermally cured to prepare non-fluorinated water-repellent coating films. Coating films were characterized by water contact angles, UV-Vis transmittance and surface morphology. The contact angle of coating films prepared by varying the molar ratio of CTMS/TEOS to 0.6~1.0 exhibited a maximum value of $107^{\circ}$ when the CTMS/TEOS molar ratio was 0.8. The coating films showed a high transmittance over the visible range up to 90% when the CTMS/TEOS molar ratios were 0.6~0.8. However, when the molar ratios of CTMS/TEOS were 0.9~1.0, the transmittance of coating films was lower than 70% due to an uneven shape of the rough surface.

  • Hydrophobic/hydrophilic patterned substrates were fabricated on a glass substrate by a liquid phase deposition (LPD) method. Hydrophobic surface was obtained by modifying ZnO thin films with a rough surface using a fluoroalkyltrimethoxysilane (FAS) and hydrophilic surface was prepared by decomposing FAS on an exposed to UV light. The hexagonal ZnO rods were perpendicularly grown by LPD method on glass substrates with a ZnO seed layer. The diameter and thickness of hexagonal ZnO rods were increased as a function of increases of immersion time. The surface morphology, thickness, crystal structure, transmittance and contact angle of prepared ZnO thin films were measured by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis) and contact angle measurement. Hydrophilic ZnO thin films with a contact angle of $20^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$ were changed to a hydrophobic surface with a contact angle of $145^{\circ}{\sim}161^{\circ}$ by a FAS surface treatment. Prepared hydrophobic surface was pattered by an irradiation of UV light using shadow mask with $300\;{\mu}m$ or 3 mm dot size. Finally, the hydrophobic surface exposed to UV light was changed to a hydrophilic surface.

  • Hydrophilic and transparent $TiO_2$ thin film was fabricated by sol-gel method and the properties of contact angle, surface morphology, and transmittance were measured. In addition, surfactant Tween 80 was used for increasing the hydrophilic property of thin film. When the contents of Tween 80 in $TiO_2$ solution was 0, 10, 30, 50wt%, the contact angles of $TiO_2$ thin film were $41.4^{\circ}$, $18.2^{\circ}$, $16.0^{\circ}$, $13.2^{\circ}$, respectively. Fabricated $TiO_2$ thin film showed the photocatalytic property that decomposed methylene blue and decreased the absorbance of solution after UV irradiation. $TiO_2$ thin films fabricated with the solution of 30 wt% Tween 80 were deposited on glass (bare), antimony tin oxide (ATO), fluorine tin oxide (FTO), indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates, and the contact angle and transmittance of thin film was measured. The contact angles of thin films deposited on four substrates were $16.2\sim27.1^{\circ}$ and was decreased to the range of $13.2\sim17.6^{\circ}$ after UV irradiation, Especially, the thin films coated on ATO and FTO glass substrate showed high transmittance of 74.6% in visible range, respectively, and low transmittance of 54.2% and 40.4% in infrared range, respectively.

  • As nanoscience and nanotechnology advance, techniques for selective pattern growth have attracted significant attention. Silica nanoparticles (NPs) are used as a promising nanomaterials for bio-labeling, bio-imaging, and bio-sensing. In this study, silica NPs were synthesized by a sol-gel process using a modified Stöber method. In addition, the selective pattern growth of silica NPs was achieved by the surface functionalization of the substrate using a micro-contact printing technique of a hydrophobic treatment. The particle size of the as-synthesized silica NPs and morphology of selective pattern growth of silica NPs were characterized by FE-SEM. The contact angle by surface functionalization of the substrate was investigated using a contact angle analyzer. As a result, silica NPs were not observed on the hydrophobic surface of the OTS solution treatment, which was coated by spin coating. In contrast, the silica NPs were well coated on the hydrophilic surface after the KOH solution treatment. FE-SEM confirmed the selective pattern growth of silica NPs on a hydrophilic surface, which was functionalized using the micro-contact printing technique. If the characteristics of the selective pattern growth of silica NPs can be applied to dye-doped silica NPs, they will find applications in the bio imaging, and bio sensing fields.
