  • Ceramic on ceramic total hip prostheses are developed to apply to young patients because lifetime of polyethylene joint prostheses is limited by loosening due to biological response. As mating faces of all-ceramic joint must be highly conformed to reduce stress concentration, wear properties of flat surfaces are investigated in this study. Through wear tests at 2 MPa of contact pressure and 36 mm/s of sliding velocity, alumina and silicon carbide keep low wear rate, high hardness and smooth surface. Soft surface film was detected after the test in bovine serum. This suggests that boundary lubrication is effective to reduce wear in all-ceramic joint.

  • A combined finite element and experimental study based on the characteristic length method is performed to investigate the strength and behavior of the pin joint in composite control rod. The failure is estimated by the Yamada-Sun and Tsai-Wu criteria on the characteristic curve. The gap elements are used to simulate the contact between the pin and the composite fitting with hole. The accuracy and applicability of the method are validated by the joint tests. All the specimens were failed in the bearing mode in the test and finite element analysis, and good agreement was found between the predicted and test results on the joint strength of composite control rod.

  • 14 patients, whose were attacked pain dysfunction syndrome of temporomandibular joint in Dental College Infirmary, Seoul National University from June 1970 to Dec. 1971, were examined regarding to clinical observation and electromyographical analysis. This paper established the followings: 1. Especially young female was more frequently attacked by pain dysfunction syndrome of Temporomandibular joint. 2. It is suggested that most of joint pain was occurred initially in opening mouth and forcible bite, and left side is more attacked than right side. 3. It was possible that this dysfunction can be occurred by open-bite, premature contact and ill-fitting prosthetic restoration. 4. Hoby, habit and bruxism as causal factors are not markedly related with this dysfunction. 5. Pain attacked regions, in most patients, are preauricular, joint itself, infra-auricular, cervical and external auditory meatus region. 6. In electromyographical studis, the musle activities of affected side of pain dysfunction syndrome are more strong than that of opposite side.

  • The analysis of human arm motion during steering maneuver is carried out for investigation of man-machine interface of driver and steering system Each arm is modeled as interconnection of upper arm, lower arm, and hand by rotational joints that can properly represents permissible joint motion, and both arms are connected to a steering wheel through spring and damper at the contact points. The joint motion law during steering motion is determined through the measurement of each arm movement, and subsequent inverse kinematic analysis. Combining the joint motion law and inverse dynamic analysis, joint stiffness of arm is estimated. Arm dynamic analysis model for steering maneuver is setup, and is validated through the comparison with experimentally measured data, which shows relatively good agreement. To demonstrate the usefulness of the arm model, it is applied to study the effect of steering column angle on the steering motion.

  • Bearing joint dynamic parameter identification is crucial in modeling the high speed spindles for machining centers used to predict the stability and natural frequencies of high speed spindles. In this paper, a hybrid method is proposed to identify the dynamic stiffness of bearing joint for the high speed spindles. The hybrid method refers to the analytical approach and experimental method. The support stiffness of spindle shaft can be obtained by adopting receptance coupling substructure analysis method, which consists of series connected bearing and joint stiffness. The bearing stiffness is calculated based on the Hertz contact theory. According to the proposed series stiffness equation, the stiffness of bearing joint can be separated from the composite stiffness. Then, one can obtain the bearing joint stiffness fitting formulas and its variation law under different preload. An experimental set-up with variable preload spindle is developed and the experiment is provided for the validation of presented bearing joint stiffness identification method. The results show that the bearing joint significantly cuts down the support stiffness of the spindles, which can seriously affects the dynamic characteristic of the high speed spindles.

  • A clinical evaluation was made on teeth in 113 subjects from ages 19 to 23 with Angle's Class I occlusion who were free from prosthesis, orthodontics, and occlusal equilibration. The study was made to determine if there was a relation between the type of occlusion, non-working contact and temporomandibular dysfunction. From the foregoing study, the author obtained the following results. 1. In lateral excursion, there was not any significant difference between bilateral canine protected occlusion (31%), bilateral group function (32.7%), and mixed type (34.5%). 2. Only 10 of 113 subjects studied had non-working side tooth contacts (8.2 per cent). 3. Twenty per cent of subjects with non-working side contact showed temporomandibular joint dysfunction. 4. Non-working side contacts were not observed in subjects with canine guided occlusion. 5. It would be premature to relate the type of occlusion on working side directly to temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

  • An analyical method is proposed to construct a clamp jointed structure as an equivalent stiffness matrix element in the finite element modal analysis of a complex beam structure. Static structural analysis was first made for the detail finite element model of the clamp joint. Utilizing the results of this analysis, the equivalent stiffness matrix element was buildup by using the flexibility influence coefficient method and Guyan condensation. The proposed method was applied to finite element modal analysis of a clamp jointed cantilever beam. And the finite element analysis results were compared to those experimental modal analysis. Comparison shows doog agreement each other Furthermore the effects of normal contact(or clamping) load on the equivalent stiffness matrix was also examined. The equivalent stiffness matrix showed little change in spite of the remakable increase in the contact load on the clamp joint.

  • This paper presents a motion planning and control method for the dexterous manipulation with a robotic hand. For a given trajectory of an object, a simulation system calculates the necessary joint displacements and contact forces at the fingertip surfaces. These joint displacements and contact forces are the reference inputs to the control loops of the robotic fingers. A task is decomposed into a set of primitive motions, and each primitive motion is executed using the planned output of the simulation system as the reference. Force sensors and dynamic tactile sensors are used to adapt to errors and uncertainties encountered during manipulation. Several experimental results are presented.

  • A systematic method of design modification to reduce the influence of impact from multiple clearances in a planar four bar mechanism is developed. For this purpose, an optimization method is used with the objective function which is the linear sum of the Earles and Wu criteria for every joints with clearances. One coil spring is attached to a joint of limited range of revolution to reduce the undesirable dynamic effects due to clearances at joints. The stiffness of the coil spring and its pre-loading angle are chosen as design variables. A numerical example is taken for a four bar mechanism. The initial and modified mechanisms are compared using a clearance mechanism analysis technic to see the difference in dynamic effects due to contact loss. It is found that the modified mechanism produces much more smooth joint contact forces than the original design.

  • According to 2013 fire statistical yearbook in the National Emergency Management Agency, the main cause of an electrical fire are classified to short circuit fault, overload fault, electric leakage, partial disconnection, and joint/contact badness. The occurrence factor of fire is electric arc or spark accompanied with electrical faults. Residual Current Protective Devices(RCDs) of high sensitivity type used at single phase (220V) cut off earth leakage and overload but the RCDs can not cut off electric arc or spark to be a main cause of electrical fire. To be improved on such problem, this thesis is proposed to a auxiliary control device for RCD cut off electric arc or spark.
