  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate a practical consumer education program for kindergarten children and to investigate whether consumer education affects their consumer knowledge and consumer behavior. The subjects of this study were 32 5-year-old kindergarten children who participated (experimental group) and 25 kindergarten children who did not participate (control group) in the consumer education program. Consumer education was held for 6 hours twice a week during October 8 to 29, 2002. Questionnaire surveys were conducted before and after the education program. Percentiles, frequencies, means, and ANCOVA were utilized for data analysis with SPSS program. The results of this study showed that consumer education had very positive and significant effects on consumer knowledge (p<.01) and consumer behavior (p<.05) among kindergarten children. Furthermore, consumer education for only three weeks had effectively enhanced kindergarten children's ability as consumers. These results imply that consumer education should be served periodically and systematically from an early age. Diverse subjects and teaching methods must be developed and utilized for consumer education of kindergarten children.

The result of the survey showed that the subjects' preferences of five size labeling sysems were different significantly. Subjects strongly preferred the old system rather than the revised systems. The subjects least preferred the system with pictogram(system D) and the system with description of the measuring methods of te control dimensions (system E). The subjects/ preference for various garment size labeling systems was different depending on their resident area, educational level, and body size. The garment size labeling system with more information on body measurements (system C) was preferred by the subjects living in the metro city area or subjects having difficulties on purchasing ready-to-wear garments giving reasonable fit. The simplest size labeling system (system A) was strongly preferred by the subjects of low educational level, or the subjects living in the small city.

Consumer ethnocentrism also showed a significant effect as a moderator on the relationship between materialism and attitude: The relationship between materialism and attitude was stronger among subjects who had lower consumer ethnocentric tendencies than among subjects who had higher consumer ethnocentric tendencies.

  • In this study elementary school children's food purchasing and consumer competency for a healthier diet were compared by their attitude toward the meal management. The subjects were 779 sixth grade elementary school children (417 boys and 362 girls) in Busan. They were classified into three groups: 'High' was composed of 226 subjects who had more than the mean +1/2 SD of attitude toward the meal management; 'Medium' was composed of 343 subjects who had the mean ${\pm}1/2$SD; and 'Low' was composed of 210 subjects who had the less than the mean -1/2 SD. The results were as follows. The high group had less pocket money than the low group, and thought that their allowances were adequate to their needs. They also had a habit of entering amounts into an account book. The children in the low group purchased mostly snacks without making or practicing a budget. The high group purchased yogurt, fruit, or bread as snacks more frequently than the low group. More children checked the nutrient facts on the package in high group than in the low group. There were no significant differences in the consumer's knowledge of a healthy diet among the groups; but there were significant differences in the consumer's skill, and the consumer's attitude toward a healthy diet among the groups. The high group had higher skills and more positive attitudes than the low group. This research suggests that education can elevate interest and can help develop more positive attitudes toward healthy diets among children. The education can help them to develop planned food purchasing habits, and improve their consumer competency for a healthy diet.

  • This study aims to identify implications for the role of home economics in consumer education in middle schools focusing on building consumer competency. To this end, the content in middle school textbooks of home economics and other subjects, written according to the 2015 revised curriculum, were analyzed. This study examined consumer education content based on the consumer competency measurement index developed by the Korean Consumer Agency, and reviewed different foci presented by subjects. This study also investigated how the knowledge, attitude and practice, which are components of consumer competency, are presented. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows: First, consumer competency content, presented in textbooks of home economics and other subjects, were comprised of citizenship competency(65.3%), transactional competency(27%), and financial competency(7.7%). Second, in terms of content on the consumer's citizenship competency, little attention was paid to consumer rights, revealing an imbalance between responsibilities and rights. Third, despite its importance, the "utilization of information and communications technology" in transaction competency, and "consumer participation" in citizenship competency are insufficiently covered in the home economics. Fourth, social studies was the subject that most extensively covered the content of consumer competency. In terms of scope, home economics dealt with most of the sub-fields. Fifth, even when the same content of consumer competency was covered, it was presented differently by subject. Sixth, there was a lack of connection between components of consumer competency-knowledge, attitude, and practice, with a disproportionately high emphasis on knowledge. In conclusion, this study concluded that consumer education content of middle school subjects is insufficient to enhance consumer competency.
