  • Although a large number of genetic variants have been identified to be associated with common diseases through genome-wide association studies, there still exits limitations in explaining the missing heritability. One approach to solving this missing heritability problem is to investigate gene-gene interactions, rather than a single-locus approach. For gene-gene interaction analysis, the multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) method has been widely applied, since the constructive induction algorithm of MDR efficiently reduces high-order dimensions into one dimension by classifying multi-level genotypes into high- and low-risk groups. The MDR method has been extended to various phenotypes and has been improved to provide a significance test for gene-gene interactions. In this paper, we propose a simple method, called accelerated failure time (AFT) UM-MDR, in which the idea of a unified model-based MDR is extended to the survival phenotype by incorporating AFT-MDR into the classification step. The proposed AFT UM-MDR method is compared with AFT-MDR through simulation studies, and a short discussion is given.

  • This paper presents the development of digital robust fuzzy controller for uncertain nonlinear systems. The proposed approach is based on the intelligent digital redesign(IDR) method with considering the relaxed stability condition of fuzzy control system. The term IDR in the concerned system is to convert an existing analog robust control into an equivalent digital counterpart in the sense of the state-matching. We shows that the IDR problem can be reduced to find the digital fuzzy gains minimizing the norm distance between the closed-loop states of the analog and digital robust control systems. Its constructive conditions are expressed as the linear matrix inequalities(LMIs) and thereby easily tractable by the convex optimization techniques. Based on the nonquadratic Lyapunov function, the robust stabilization conditions are given for the sampled-data fuzzy system, and hence less conservative. A numerical example, chaotic Lorentz system, is demonstrated to visualize the feasibility of the proposed methodology.

  • Education is an intentional change of human behaviors. This change is implemented through the learning process of humans. The principles in the learning process and its psychological mechanism are based on learning theories. The objective insight about how they are related with school libraries as a basic organization supporting school education, what they can contribute and what their research methodologies are is a base for educational and academic research of school libraries. This study at first is to investigate learning and teaching theories for school libraries based on behavioral learning theories, cognitive learning theories and constructive learning theories which are general trends for learning theories. Then it is to introduce new theory 'library-based education approach (LBEA)'as an educational base of school libraries.

  • This paper reviews the relationships between diverse ecological design strategies and competing conceptions of ecological approach in place making. It focuses conceptual trends of what we categorize a building "green" and outlines a social constructive perspective on the development of sustainable architecture. This study classifies seven logics of ecological design-eco-technical, eco-aesthetical, eco-social, eco-medical, eco-renewable, eco-cultural, eco-central - which have their roots in competing philosophies of environmentalism. In my analysis of the logics concerning sustainable architecture, the adapted and incorporated technology from high-tech to low-tech levels is a key issue. These points lead us to propose a way that each logic configures the technological approaches and alternative visions of sustainable places. This paper discusses the implications of the competent nature of plural ecological design perspectives for architectural education, practice, and researches.
