Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)-Aided System for Logistics Monitoring: Supply Chains in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant Construction

  • Many conventional management methods have emphasized the minimization of required resources along the supply chain. Accordingly, this paper presents a proposed method called the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)-aided system. It is based on object-oriented resource control, in order to accomplish a feed-forward control monitoring supply chain logistics. The system is supported by two main parts: (1) IT-based Technologies; and (2) VDC Models. They enable the system to convey proactive information from the detection technology to its linked visualization. The paper includes a field study as the system's pre-test: the Scaffolding Works in a LNG Mega Project. The study demonstrates a system of real-time productivity monitoring by use of the RFIDbased Mobile Information Hub. The on-line 'productivity dashboard' provides an opportunity to display the continuing processes for each work-package. This research project offers the observed opportunities created by the developed system. Future work will entail research experiments aimed towards system validation.

  • Top-notch global construction firms have been responding strategically in order to survive in a rapidly-changing market environment by training and securing excellent human resources. The purpose of this study is to propose a guideline for establishing a strategic human resources management system for the Chinese construction sector. Specifically, this study intends to suggest an overall strategic plan for improving the human resources management system based on the research outcomes obtained through an analysis of the Chinese construction market and human resource management practices. To meet the proposed research purpose, questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews were conducted in China. The analysis results indicated that Chinese construction firms are generally not prepared to carry out efficient training programs. In addition, the available contents and materials for education and technical training are extremely limited. Based on the problems drawn from the analysis results, an overall plan for the improvement of the education system is suggested.

  • As construction projects become getting bigger and complicated, the importance of resource management in construction sites is to be emphasized all the more than ever, but the reality is now gone far away leaving data filing and management dependent on the hands of in-field managers, which gives rise to a variety of problems such as decreased productivity. The manually-dependent data management makes it hard to acquire data and information needed for projects both quickly and correctly with abundant cost and endeavor by accumulating the related data, and efficient project management, being exemplified by such practical applications as Bar-code, RFID(Radio Frequency Identification), GPS(Global Positioning System), PDA(Personal Digital Assistants), USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) and DAT(Data Acquisition Technology).   • Project managers are responsible to conduct project on time with least amount of costs and the most possible quality with respect to shortage of resources and environmental certainties. They have to make the best decision to reach such conflicting objects. In this study the project scheduling with multi goals-multi modes was planned in fuzzy conditions under resource constraints and expanded by fuzzy goal programing (FGP). The project cost was calculated by the price of renewable resources and the quality criteria were evaluated by the quality function deployment method (QFD). Finally the model was verified by a construction case study with 22 activities along with solving by GAMS. The results showed that this model could provide a systematic framework to facilitate the decision making process and made the project managers to be able to schedule the project closer to reality.

  • Lately, Building Information Modeling (BIM) emerges as the most promising technology, now is expected to bring a great deal of improvement of productivity in every aspect of the construction industry. One of the BIM based scheduling is to use BIM model as a base for applying to schedule analysis and simulation tools. This type of tools may incorporate a various types of information such as the building model, construction method information, resource information, productivity information, rules and constraints to optimize activity sequencing. This paper proposes a framework of BIM based simulating system which can be used to optimize construction processes, especially for the floor construction cycle. For the purpose, all of the necessary components of the system will be defined and represented, and next an algorithm will be introduced to demonstrate the principle of simulating operation. The benefits of this technique are basically two : to test and optimize construction methods in respect of the construction duration and to reduce the floor construction cycle.

Analysis of Productivity Differences in Steel Bridge Manufacturing Plants According to Resource Allocation Methods for the Bottleneck (병목공정 자원할당 방식에 따른 강교 제작공장 생산성 차이 분석)

  • In this study, we proposed resource allocation methodologies to improve the productivity of steel bridge manufacturing plants based on the constraint theory which is very popular in the area of manufacturing industries. To this end, after defining the painting process as a bottleneck, three resource allocation methodologies were developed: Operation Specific Resource Allocation (OSRA), Product Specific Resource Allocation (PSRA), and General Resource Allocation (GRA). As a result of experiments for performance evaluation using a simulation model of the steel bridge supply chain, GRA showed the best performance in terms of the Number of Work-In-Process (NWIP) and Waiting Time (WT), in particular, as workload itself and its variability were increased, the performance gap with the specific resource allocation became further deepened. On average, GRA reduced NWIP by 36.2% and WT by 34.6% compared to OSRA, and reduced NWIP by 71.0% and WT by 70.4% compared to PSRA. The reduction of NWIP and WT means alleviating the bottleneck of the painting process, which eventually means that the productivity of the steel bridge manufacturing plant has improved.

  • In large-scale industry such as shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, and construction industry etc., it is required to consider two or three-dimensional spatial availability as one of bottlenecked resource constraints. We call this kind of scheduling a spatial scheduling, which considers the dynamic spatial layouts of objects as well as the traditional resource constraints. Since 1991, we have researched on the spatial scheduling for shipbuilding plant (Lee & Lee, 1992; Lee et al., 1994, Lee et al., 1995). In this paper, we present the various issues of spatial scheduling for the researchers and developers attacking spatial scheduling problems.

A Study on the Construction of the Multiple Fishery Cooperation System Between Korea, China and Japan (한.중.일 다자간 어업협력체 구성방안 연구)

  • Since the declaration made by UN Convention on the Law of the Sea on EEZs, The open seas of Northeast Asia, considerd as a convention area, needed new agreements in conformity with the changes brought by the introduction of the Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) system. The Contracting Parties of these agreements set up their own EEZs, which extend certain ranges from their baselines, Fishing in the other party's EEZ is done based on mutual agreements, which take into account traditional fishing activity in the zones. Seperate fishries management systems, in accordance with the relevant legal status of the waters, are applied to individual overlapping areas: Middle Zone in the Bast Sea and the waters south of jeju Island, Interim Measure Zone in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, and the Transitional Zone in the Yellow Sea. They decided to conclude fisheries agreements as the provisional agreement under Article 74(3) of the UN Convention before the delimitations of the EEZs to avoid the territorial disputes. China and Japan concluded the Fishries Agreement in the November 1997, allowing each coastal State 52 mile EEZ. it was followed by Korea and Japan in September 1998, reaching a final compromise. And also Korea and China came to a satisfactary settlement in November 1998. Fisheries agreements have been established between the three North-east Asian States, the agreement are all bilateral. That implies inefficient resource management on the overlapping waters of the three states, especially on the East China Sea. The Korea-Japan Fisheries Agreement and the China-Japan Fishery Agreement worked as governing rules in the North-east Asian seas before the establishment of EEZs (Exclusive Economic Zones). However the conclusion of the bilateral fishery agreements, Korea China and Japan have developed EEZs, and these three countries have competed for the exploitation of fisheries resources. Therefore, the issue of fisheries resource management was no longer a single countries' problem and emerged as a common issue facing these three countries. In recognition of the above-mentioned problem, it is needed for the construction of cooperative System fishery management in the North-east Asian seas. Therefore, cooperative measures should be establishied. The final goal of the construction of fisheries management cooperative system is to establish sustainable fisheries in the North-east Asian seas. However, there is a big difference in fisheries management tools, fishing gear, exploitation rate of species, etc. This implies that a careful approach should be taken in order to achieve the cooperative fisheries management among Korea, China and Japan. conclusionly, the Governments of Korea, China and Japan should complement three bilateral agreemens, and which they prepares to 'Fisheries Resource Restore Program' Between Korea, China and Japan in the adjacent waters south of Jeju Island.

Research on the Trend of Establishment and Utilization of Overseas Forest Geospatial Information for Scientific Forest Resource Management (과학적인 산림자원관리를 위한 해외 산림공간정보 구축 및 활용 동향 조사)

  • In order to advance forest resource management, it is necessary to solve problems such as the aging of forest-related industry workers and the field investigation system centered on manpower. Therefore, in this study, the trend of establishment and utilization of overseas forest geospatial information applied with the latest technology for scientific forest resource management was investigated to identify the domestic application plan. Overseas, photogrammetry and LiDAR technologies were being used to construct and utilize forest geospatial information. In the case of photogrammetry, it was used to measure the volume of vegetation, diameter, and tree height. And LiDAR technology has been applied to the measurement of diameter, and tree height. Through the analysis of overseas cases, it was identified how to construct forest geospatial information using photogrammetry and LiDAR, and it was found that LiDAR showed higher accuracy than photogrammetry. In the future, if the construction of forest geospatial information using various LiDAR sensors are performed and the accuracy and work efficiency are analyzed, it will be possible to present the possibility of using new technologies in the construction of forest geospatial information in Korea.

CPM Bar Chart Technique for Construction Scheduling (CPM Bar Chart 기법을 활용한 일정계획)

  • This paper proposes the CPM bar chart (CBC), a hybrid of the bar chart and the critical pad method (CPM). The CBC overcomes shortages of the fenced bar chart, while still keeping advantages. The fence with direction is applied instead of the broken fence, which triggers considerable problems to identify and apply in the fenced bar chart. In addition, the notorious task to find dummy activities is no longer required. Upon the benefits of simplicity in the bar chart and logical work sequence in the CPM network. the CBC provides a relatively easy way to create and understand a schedule, thus improving communication quality between project participants. With the advantages, the CBC can also be effectively applied to various scheduling techniques such as resource constrained scheduling, resource leveling, scheduling with activity split, delay impact analysis, etc.
