  • A viscoelastic constitutive equation of rubber that is under small oscillatory load superimposed on large static deformation is proposed. The proposed model is derived through linearization of Simo's viscoelastic constitutive model and reference configuration transformation. The proposed constitutive equation is extended to a generalized viscoelastic constitutive equation that includes widely used Mormin's model as a special case using objective stress increment. Static deformation correction factor is introduced to consider the influence of Pre-strain on the relaxation function. The proposed constitutive model is tested fer dynamic behavior of rubber specimens with different carbon black contents. It is concluded from the test that the viscoelastic constitutive equation for filled rubber must include the influence of the static deformation on the time effects. The suggested constitutive equation with static deformation correction factor shows good agreement with test values.

  • The constitutive relation is an important factor in analysis of confined concrete in composite structures. In order to propose a constitutive model for nonlinear analysis of confined concrete, lateral restraint mechanism of confined concrete is firstly analyze to study the generalities. As the foundation of the constitutive model, peak stress and peak strain is the first step in research. According to the generalities and the Twin Shear Unified Strength Theory, a novel unified equation for peak stress and peak strain are established. It is well coincident with experimental results. Based on the general constitutive relations and the unified equation for peak stress and peak strain, we propose a unified and convenient constitutive model for confined concrete with fewer material parameters. Two examples involved with steel tube confined concrete and hoop-confined concrete are considered. The proposed constitutive model coincides well with the experimental results. This constitutive model can also be extended for nonlinear analysis to other types of confined concrete.

  • A method to derive the constitutive relations of a piezoelectric bender actuator is developed here. The constitutive relations are derived from the geometry, material properties of the actuator. The very complicated constitutive relations can be easily calculated by use of symbolic function in Mathematica. The developed program can calculate the constitutive relations for the unimorph bender made by attaching a short piezoelectric beam on a longer metal beam. The program can also calculate the constitutive relations of a piezoelectric bender with spring at its end.

  • This paper presents a mechanistic approach to uniaxial viscoelastic constitutive modeling of asphalt concrete that accounts for damage evolution under cyclic loading conditions. An elasticviscoelastic correspondence principle in terms of pseudo variables is applied to separately evaluate viscoelasticity and time-dependent damage growth in asphalt concrete. The time-dependent damage growth in asphalt concrete is modeled by using a damage parameter based on a generalization of microcrack growth law. Internal state variables that describe the hysteretic behavior of asphalt concrete are determined. A constitutive equation in terms of stress and pseudo strain is first established for controlled-strain mode and then transformed to a controlled-stress constitutive equation by simply replacing physical stress and pseudo strain with pseudo stress and physical strain. Tensile uniaxial fatigue tests are performed under the controlled-strain mode to determine model parameters. The constitutive equations in terms of pseudo strain and pseudo stress satisfactorily predict the constitutive behavior of asphalt concrete all the way up to failure under controlled-strain and -stress modes, respectively.

  • The Hansel-Spittel constitutive model requires a total of nine parameters for flow stress prediction. Typically, the parameters are estimated by least squares methods for given tensile test measurements from a deterministic perspective. In this research we took a different approach, a probabilistic viewpoint, to see through the development of the Hansel-Spittel constitutive model. This perspective change showed that deterministic least squares methods are closely related to statistical maximum likelihood methods via Gaussian noise assumption. More intriguingly, this perspective shift revealed that the Hansel-Spittel constitutive model may leave out deterministic trends in residuals despite nearly perfect agreement with measurements. With tensile test measurements of AA1070 aluminum alloy, we demonstrated this deficiency of the Hansel-Spittel constitutive model, suggesting room for improvement.

  • Most studies of failure analysis in ductile metals have been based on the classical plasticity theory using the local constitutive relations. These frequently yields a physically unrealistic solution, in which a numerical prediction of the onset of a deformation localization shows an inherent mesh-size sensitivity. A one way to remedy the spurious mesh sensitivity resulted in the unreasonable results is to incorporate the non-local plasticity into the simulation model, which introduce an internal (material) length-scale parameter into the classical constitutive relations. In this paper, a non-local version of the modified Gurson constitutive relation has been introduced into the finite element formulation of the simulation for plane strain compression of the visco elastic-plastic void material. By introducing the non-local constitutive relations we could successfully removed the inherent mesh-size sensitivity for the prediction of the deformation localization. The effects of non-local constitutive relation are discussed in terms of the load-stroke curve and the strain distributions accross the shear band.

  • To investigate the role of induction on CGTase production for alkalophilic Bacillus firm us var. alkalophilus H609, the constitutive mutants that form a halo around its colonies at non-inducible AG agar media containing amylose and glucose were selected. The selected constitutive mutants could produce CGTase in the range of 18.9 to 28.8 units/ml $\cdot A_{600}$ in the alkaline basal medium, and finally a constitutive mutant Bacillus firmus var. alkalophilus CM46 was selected. The constitutive nature of CM46 was also confirmed in protein level using SDS-PAGE. The effects of induction and catabolite repression for both parent strain Bacillus firmus var. alkalophilus H609 and constitutive mutant CM46 were also compared by adding soluble starch and glucose during cultivation. The selected mutant CM46 was a non-inducible but a catabolite regulated type mutant. Even though inductive regulation was released, the specific CGTase activity defined as CGTase activity per cell concentration was not increased compared with that of parent strain. The cell growth and CGTase production patterns of constitutive mutant Bacillus firmus var. alkalophilus CM46 were compared with the parent strain to identify CGTase production characteristics.

  • Constitutive equations in a nuclear reactor safety analysis code are mostly empirical correlations developed from experiments, which always accompany uncertainties. The accuracy of the code can be improved by modifying the constitutive equations fitting wider range of data with less uncertainty. Thus, the sensitivity of the code with respect to the constitutive equations is evaluated quantitatively in the paper to understand the room for improvement of the code. A new methodology is proposed which first starts by dividing the thermal hydraulic conditions into multiple sub-regimes using self-organizing map (SOM) clustering method. The sensitivity analysis is then conducted by multiplying an arbitrary set of coefficients to the constitutive equations for each sub-divided thermal-hydraulic regime with SOM to observe how the code accuracy varies. The randomly chosen multiplier coefficient represents the uncertainty of the constitutive equations. Furthermore, the set with the smallest error with the selected experimental data can be obtained and can provide insight which direction should the constitutive equations be modified to improve the code accuracy. The newly proposed method is applied to a steady-state experiment and a transient experiment to illustrate how the method can provide insight to the code developer.

  • To improve the predictive capability of a nuclear thermal hydraulic safety analysis code by developing a better constitutive equation for individual phenomenon has been the general research direction until now. This paper proposes a new method to directly use complex experimental data obtained from integral effect test (IET) to improve constitutive models holistically and simultaneously. The method relies on the sensitivity of a simulation result of IET data to the multiple constitutive equations utilized during the simulation, and the sensitivity of individual model determines the direction of modification for the constitutive model. To develop a robust and generalized method, a clustering algorithm using an artificial neural network, sample space size determination using non-parametric statistics, and sampling method of Latin hypercube sampling are used in a combined manner. The value of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by applying the method to the ATLAS DSP-05 IET experiment. A sensitivity of each observation parameter to the constitutive models is analyzed. The new methodology suggested in the study can be used to improve the code prediction results of complex IET data by identifying the direction for constitutive equations to be modified.

  • Generally, the structural material shows rate dependent behaviors, which require to constitute different strain-stress relations according to strain rates. Conventional rate- independent constitutive equations used in general purpose finite analysis programs are inadequate for dynamic finite strain problems. In this paper, a rate dependent constitutive equation for elastic-plastic material was developed. The plastic stretch rate was modeled based on slip model with dislocation velocity and density so that there is no yielding condition, and no loading conditions. Non-linear hardening rule was also introduced for finite strain. Material constants of present constitutive equation were determined by experimental data of mild steel. The constitutive equation was applied to uniaxile tension. It was appeared that the present constitutive equation well simulates rate dependent behaviors of mild steel.
