After studying the theory of JangBu(臟腑), that is a physiology of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, in Sasang Constitutional Medicine, the author could draw a conclusion as these. 1. The basic thought of Sasang Constitutional Medicine is emphatic on the human beings itself unlike the idea of traditional Oriental Medicine, that accentuate the universe.(The traditional Oriental Medicine has a concept that the human beings follows the order of universe, but Sasang Constitutional Medicine has a different idea that human beings has the free will to the universe and newly comprehend the relationships between human beings and universe.) 2. Like the preceding, the theory of JangBu(臟腑), the physiology of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, is based on the autonomic mechanisms of human body itself. 3. The medical philosophy of Sasang Constitutional Medicine is Sasang(四象), that is Sa(事), Sim(心), Sin(身) and Mul(物). This Sasang is a classification of universe include human beings.(Sa(事) is event, Sim(心) is mind, Sin(身) is body, and Mul(物) is things. these four elements express the universe and human.) 4. The JangBu(臟腑) theory of Sasang Constitutional Medicine regard mind condition as important. The mind condition is divided into two factors. The one is Seong(性) the other is Jeong(情). The Seong(性) is an attitude toward the world, and the Jeong(情) is response to the stimulation from the world. 5. By the actions of Seong(性) and Jeong(情), the human body has different JangBu(臟腑) function, so the human body can be grouped in four constitutions. 6. Because of emphasis on mind condition, the Sasang JangBu(臟腑) theory has activism of human beings itself. 7. This activismor practical philosophy of Sasang JangBu(臟腑) theory, that is a physiology of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, gave birth to ethics or morality in Medical philosophy, that the human practice of ethics or morality bring a health and well being of human body.
Purpose: This research aimed to acquire the trends of Korean nursing research on Sasang constitutional theory. Methods: Total of 25 research articles selected from 17 nursing journals published in Korea since 1990. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Experimental studies preferred to non-experimental research design. The subjects were mostly adult or geriatric population. Most frequently used intervention was diet based on Sasang constitutional theory, and health-related factors were most frequently used as variables. Conclusion: The Sasang constitutional theory considers personal differences important, so it may be suitable for individually tailored nursing care. Therefore, continuous nursing studies using interventions based on Sasang constitutional theory are needed to establish it as one of evidence-based nursing interventions.
The usefulness of constitutional diagnoses based on skin measurements has been established in oriental medicine. According to Sasang constitutional medicine, humans can be distinguished based on properties of skin's friction, thickness and elasticity. To quantify and standardize skin diagnosis, the present study designed an equipment for measuring skin elasticity of hand. But there were some noises in measuring skin elasticity such as measurement method, environment, operator and conditions of patient. So we considered a six sigma project for reducing the measurement errors. The project was followed to discipline process of five macro phases: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control(DMAIC). So, we could find the major factors which should be controled for stabilizing measurement system and we revised the SOP(Standard Operating Procedure) of the skin elasticity measurement.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to report on the collecting status of the prospective clinical data, that is designed to find clinical factors for determining the constitutional prescription. Methods We collected the prospective clinical data of 1208 subjects in the 10 oriental hospitals and 2 oriental clinic, from September 2012 to July 2015. Subjects were diagnosed and prescribed by the Sasang Constitution specialist. We counted the usage frequency of each constitutional herbal formula. Besides we check the main chief complaints on each constitutional herbal formula. Results & Conclusions In TE type, Yeoldahanso-tang, Cheongsimnyeonja-tang were used in high frequency. In SE type, Palmulgunja-tang, Gwakhyangjunggi-san were used in high frequency. In SY type, Hyeongbangjihwang-tang, Yanggyeoksanhwa-tang were used in high frequency. The both of high frequency-prescriptions in TE types were for the Interiorheat disease, expecially liver-heat lung-dry symptomatology. The main chief complaint of high frequency-prescriptions was fatigue in every constitution. We hope that the process of constitutional prescription would be standardized through the subsequent researches.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the ordinary symptoms, special symptoms and Body Mass Index (BMI) according to Sasang constitution in female college students. Also, we aimed to analyze the factors affecting BMI. Methods Forty-four female college students participated in this study. Sasang Constitution was determined by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II. BMI was measured and ordinary symptoms were acqired through the questionnaire. Special symptoms was determined by Fatigue Severity Index (FSS), Premenstrual Symptom Screening Tool (PSST), ROME III, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), respectively. For statistical analysis, t-test, analysis of variance and correlation test has been used. Results There existed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms between sasang constitutions. Taeumin had higher urine frequency than soyangin, soeumin had higher gap of feces than taeumin. Taeumin had higher BMI and ROME III score than soyangin and soeumin. They showed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms according to BMI. Overweight and obese group is higher in water intake than low and normal group. Low weight and normal group is higher in gap of feces than overweight and obese group. High score group in PSST and ROME III showed high BMI than low score group. We analyzed the factors that affect BMI. BMI are highly correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, FSS, PSST, ROME III and OSDI showed high correlation with each other. Conclusion Urine frequency and gap of feces are different among sasang constitutional types. The obese group and normal group showed significant differences in water intake, gap of feces, PSST and ROME III score. It is found that factors that affecting BMI are systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These results may lead to identifying the causes and factors of obesity in female college students related to Sasang constitution.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to find the prevalences and risk factors of the metabolic syndrome according to Sasang constitution. Methods : The medical records of 364 subjects who had taken health examinations and diagnosis of Sasang constitution from January to June of 2003 at a health examination center of a hospital in Seoul were reviewed. The prevalences and the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome according to Sasang constitution were compared and analyzed. Results : 1) Among the 364 subjects, 88 (24.2%) were Soeumin, 101 (27.7%) were Soyangin, and 175 (48.1%) were Taeumin. 2) The prevalences of high WC, high TG, low HDL-c, high BP and high FBS of Taeumin were significantly higher than those of the other constitutions (p-value < 0.05). 3) The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome of Taeumin, Soyangin, and Soeumin were 46.3%, 16.8% and 9.1% respectively. The rates were significantly different according to Sasang constitution (p-value < 0.001). 4) Taeumin had higher risk of high WC than Soeumin (adjusted OR : 3.83, 95% CI : 1.19-12.29) and higher risk of high FBS than Soeumin (adjusted OR: 5.93,95% CI : 1.11-31.77). 5) Taeumin had higher risk of the metabolic syndrome than Soeumin (adjusted OR : 3.40, 95% CI : 1.25-9.23). Conclusions : There were significant differences in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to Sasang constitution. Sasang constitution was identified as an independent risk factor of metabolic syndrome.
1. Objective : This study aimed to know the concordance coefficient and diagnostic trend of 6 Sasang constitution diagnosis factors among experts, which are important to diagnose Sasang constitution. 2. Methods : We suggested each 100 cases containing body shape, face, temperament, physiological and pathological symptom and constitutional drug response to 2 groups experts, and researched expert opinions. We analyzed concordance coefficient with Kendall's coefficient of concordance W. 3. Results : 1) Experts agreed with 167(82.5%) diagnosis results of cases, but there were 33 cases(17.5%), with which even one expert disagreed 2) The concordance of priority order of Sasang constitutional factors was significantly associated within expert. 3) Experts put the priority concordance to drug response and Face, body shape, voice and Pathological and physiological symptoms in order. 4) In case by case, concordance coefficient was 47(55.9%) in group 1, 9(10.8%) in group 2, 56 (33.5%) in total. 4. Conclusions : Experts made much account of drug responses and faces in diagnosing Sasang constitution. but there were different opinions in concordance coefficient. So Sasang Constitution Diagnosis Guideline is necessary to integrate experts opinions.
Objective The purpose of this study is to study the effects of Taeeumjowi-tang extract granule on metabolic syndrome with obesity in Taeeumin. Methods We studied 206 subjects who diagnosed metabolic syndrome with obesity and classified Taeeumin by a Sasang constitution analysis tool. The subjects were administered by Taeeumjowi-tang for 12 weeks. We investigated the changes of body mass index, abdominal circumference, the number of risk factors for metabolic syndrome, lipid, fasting blood sugar, Hemoglobin A1c, free fatty acid, insulin, and blood pressure. Results Body mass index and abdominal circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly reduced after 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks of administration compared to before administration. Triglyceride significantly decreased after 8 weeks and 12 weeks of dosing compared to before taking. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood sugar were significantly increased after 8 weeks of administration compared to before administration. High density lipoprotein cholessterol was decreased significantly after 4 weeks of administration compared to before administration. The number of risk factors for metabolic syndrome, Hemoglobin A1c increased significantly after 12 weeks of administration compared to screening. Conclusions In this study we knew that Taeeumjowi-tang extract granule is very efficient in metabolic syndrome, especially in obesity and hypertension, triglyceride, insulin resistance.
