  • Wind is an abundant source of natural energy which can be utilized to generate power. Wind velocity does not remain constant, and as a result the output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) fluctuates. To reduce the fluctuation, different approaches are already being proposed, such as energy storage devices, electric double layer capacitors, flywheels, and so on. These methods are effective but require a significant extra cost to installation and maintenance. This paper proposes to reduce output power fluctuation by controlling kinetic energy of a WTG system. A MW-class pitch-regulated permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is introduced to apply a power fluctuation reducing method. The major advantage of this proposed method is that, an additional energy storage system is not required to control the power fluctuation. Additionally, the proposed method can mitigate shaft stress of a WTG system. Which is reflected in an enhanced reliability of the wind turbine. Moreover, the proposed method can be changed to the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method by adjusting an averaging time. The proposed power smoothing control is compared with the MPPT control method and verified by using the MATLAB SIMULINK environment.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method for speed controller, current control of a Brushless Direct Current(: BLDC) motor using disturbance rejection techniques. Disturbance assumes a back electromotive force occurring in the electrical system and the variation of the load acting on the rotary shaft from the outside of the motor. And it assumed to be constant during the time interval and the Luenberger's observer design. So that the error of the observer about the system status can converge to zero show how to set the appropriate gain. Further, to stabilize the whole system, and proposes a method for setting the appropriate PI gain control to improve the tracking performance. By applying the proposed controller to 120W BLDC motors were tested for the ability to follow the velocity and current reference. Since the simulation results of the steady state error is within 0.1%, we were able to show the usefulness of the tracking performance of the proposed controller.

  • A cartridge type hydraulic logic valve consists of simple two port valve whose poppet is closed or opened by means of pressure signal of a pilot line. Accordingly, the logic valve can be used not only for direction, flow and pressure control purpose but also for versatile function valve which enables all above mentioned functions. In addition, the valve has little internal leakage and pressure loss, superior response characteristics and easiness in making small block type valve. The above mentioned good performances being recognized recently, the logic valve has been used widely in the large scale hydraulic system such as a hydraulic press system, for the performance requirements of high speed operation and precise control characteristics. However, there are scarce reports until now, except for a few ones from Aachen Institute of Technology in West Germany, so it is necessary to be studied on development and investigation for practical application. This paper showed that the static and dynamic characteristics of a logic valve when the logic valve is used for directional control, to investigate the relations between the valve operating characteristics and the valve design conditions. From the above mentioned procedure, it was ascertained that the valve operation characteristics obtained by numerical analysis showed good agreements with experimental results. The representative results obtained are as follows; 1. During the valve is closing, the poppet velocity is almost constant in the logic valve. 2. The pilot pressure P sub(3) and the resistance R in the pilot line have much influences on the valve operation time. 3. Spring strength have not such a severe influence on the valve operating time. 4. The operation characteristics of the logic valve can be estimated with good accuracy comparatively by numerical analysis with the equations describing poppet motion.

  • Recently, a heavy rainfall under climate change causes the flood exceeded river's conveyance. Flood control methods under the limited river width are the increase of embankment, the construction of storage pockets and diversion channel, the dredging of river bed. Hwasun flood control reservoir of washland is designed as the storage pockets and the regulating gate for the control of water level. In this study, the propriety of design was investigated through hydraulic experiments for the circumstances to exclude the constant flood discharge during operation period. In the results, the over flow rate of side weir exceeded the flow of design and indicated to be able to discharge the designed flow in the regulating gate opened 1.1 m. The high velocity 7.1 m/s behind the gate has investigated to reduce under 3.3 m/s by the baffle block.

  • Background/Objectives: This paper proposes a dual mode feedback-controlled cycling system for children with spastic cerebral palsy to rehabilitate upper extremities. Repetitive upper limb exercise in this therapy aims to both reduce and analyze the abnormal torque patterns of arm movements in three- dimensional space. Methods/Statistical analysis: We designed an exercycle robot which consists of a BLDC motor, a torque sensor, a bevel gear and bearings. Mechanical structures are customized for children of age between 7~13 years old and induces reaching and pulling task in a symmetric circulation. The shafts and external frames were designed and printed using 3D printer. While the child performs active/passive exercise, angular position, angular velocity, and relative torque of the pedal shaft are measured and displayed in real time. Findings: Experiment was designed to observe the features of a cerebral palsy child's exercise. Two children with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy participated in the experiment and conducted an active exercise at normal speed for 3 sets, 15 seconds for each. As the pedal reached 90 degrees and 270 degrees, the subject showed minimum torque, in which the child showed difficulty in the pulling task of the cycle. The passive exercise assisted the child to maintain a relatively constant torque while visually observing the movement patterns. Using two types of exercise enabled the child to overcome the abnormal torque measured in the active data by performing the passive exercise. Thus, this system has advantage not only in allowing the child to perform the difficult task, which may contribute in improving the muscle strength and endurance and reducing the spasticity but also provide customizable system according to the child's motion characteristic. Improvements/Applications: Further study is needed to observe how passive exercise influences the movement characteristics of an active motion and how customized experiment settings can optimize the effect of pediatric rehabilitation for spastic cerebral palsy.

  • In order to obtain good driving performance in motor control, measurement of the state required for control is necessary. It must also be able to compensate for nonlinear elements of the mathematical model of the motor and disturbances such as load variation. In this study, we design a Kalman filter that can effectively remove noise included in measurements. Kalman filters are effective in estimating the state of linear systems. The system model is feedback linearized by estimating nonlinear terms and load variation as disturbances and compensating them for the system control input. It can be shown that the Kalman filter and the disturbance observer can converge stably independently of each other. As a result of the state estimation, an angular velocity estimation error of within approximately 0.3 [%] and a constant load estimation error of within approximately 4 [%] were obtained.

  • In an effort to increase the thermoelectric figure of merit by reducing the thermal conductivity, the unidirectionally solidified n-type (Bi, Pb)-Te based alloys which form a $Bi_{2}Te_{3}-PbBi_{4}Te_{7}$eutectic lamellar structure were investigated with the microstructural control at various solidification conditions. PbBi_{4}Te_{7}$ lamellae were grown on cleavage plane(0001) of $Bi_{2}Te_{3}$ and the interlamellar spacing decreased from 10.4 $\mu \textrm{m}$to 3.2$\mu \textrm{m}$ with growth velocity variation from 1.4 \times 10^{-4}$cm/sec to $8.3 \times 10^{-4}$cm/sec. Seebeck coefficient was constant, $\mid$$\alpha$$\mid$=29 $\mu$ V/K regardless of growth direction, growth velocity and temperature gradient. Electrical conductivity showed a tendency to decrease slightly with growth velocity and it parallel to growth direction was about three times as large as perpendicular direction. The figures of merit were varied differently from Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities depending on the growth direction, growth velocity and temperature gradients. They showed the relative increase in case of perpendicular direction compared with parallel to growth direction. It is believed to be due to the reduction of the thermal conductivity according to decrease of the interlamellar spacing.

  • In membrane bio-reactor (MBR), the aeration control is one of the important independent variables to decrease fouling and to save energy with shear stress change on the membrane surface. The paper was carried out for numerical simulation of 3-dimensional fluid flow phenomena of the cylindrical bioreactor with submerged flat membranes equipped in the center and supplied the air from the bottom by using the COMSOL program. The viscosity and temperature of solution were assumed to be constant, and the specific air demand based on permeate volume ($SAD_p$) defined as scouring air per permeate rates was used as a variable. The calculated CFD velocities were compared with those of the velocity meter measurement and video image analysis, respectively. The results were good agreement each other within 11% error. For fluid flow in the reactor the liquid velocity increased rapidly between the air diffuser and membrane module, but the velocity decreased during flowing of the membrane module. Also, the velocity increased as it was near from the reactor wall to the central axis. The calculated shear stress on the membrane surface showed the highest value at the center part of the module bottom side and increased as aeration rate increased. Especially, the wall shear stress increased dramatically as the aeration rate increased from 0.15 to 0.25 L/min.

  • To prevent accidents near the quay caused by a ship, ports are generally designed and constructed through navigation and berthing safety assessment. However, unpredictable accidents such as ship collisions with the quay or personal accidents caused by ropes still occur sometimes during the ship berthing or mooring process. Automatic mooring systems, which are equipped with an attachment mechanism composed of robotic manipulators and vacuum pads, are designed for rapid and safe mooring of ships. This paper deals with a displacement and velocity measurement system for the automatic mooring device, which is essential for the position and speed control of the vacuum pads. To design a suitable system for an automatic mooring device, we first analyze the sensor's performance and outdoor environmental characteristics. Based on the analysis results, we describe the configuration and design methods of a displacement and velocity measurement system for application in outdoor environments. Additionally, several algorithms for detecting the sensor's state and estimating a ship's velocity are developed. The proposed method is verified through some experiments for displacement and speed measurement targeted at a moving object with constant speed.

  • The objective of the present study was to improve the biomass productivity of newly isolated freshwater green microalga Parachlorella sp. This was accomplished by culture conditions optimization, including CO2 concentration, superficial gas velocity, and light intensity, in 0.5 L bubble column photobioreactors. The supplied CO2 concentration and gas velocity varied from 0.032% (air) to 10% and 0.02 m/s - 0.11 m/s, respectively, to evaluate their effects on growth kinetics. Next, to maximize the production rate of Parachlorella sp., a lumostatic operation based on a specific light uptake rate (qe) was applied. From these results, the optimal CO2 concentration in the supplied gas and the gas velocity were determined to be 5% and 0.064 m/s, respectively. For the lumostatic operation at 10.2 µmol/g/s, biomass productivity and photon yield showed significant increases of 83% and 66%, respectively, relative to cultures under constant light intensity. These results indicate that the biomass productivity of Parachlorella sp. can be improved by optimizing gas properties and light control as cell concentrations vary over time.
