A Study of Radon Reduction using Panel-type Activated Carbon (판재형 활성탄을 이용한 라돈 저감 연구)

  • Recently, building materials and air purification filters with eco-friendly charcoal are actively studying to reduce the concentration of radon gas in indoor air. In this study, radon reduction performance was assessed by designing and producing new panel-type activated carbon filter that can be handled more efficiently than conventional charcoal filters, which can reduce radon gas. For the fabrication of our panel-type activated carbon filter, first the pressed molding product after mixing activated carbon powder and polyurethane. Then, through diamond cutting, the activated carbon filter of 2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm thickness were fabricated. To investigate the physical characteristics of the fabricated activated carbon filter, a surface area and flexural strength measurement was performed. In addition, to evaluate the reduction performance of radon gas in indoor, the radon concentration of before and after the filter passes from a constant amount of air flow using three acrylic chambers was measured, respectively. As a result, the surface area of the fabricated activated carbon was approximately 1,008m2/g showing similar value to conventional products. Also, the flexural load was found to have three times higher value than the gypsum board with 435 N. Finally, the radon reduction efficiency from indoor gas improved as the thickness of the activated carbon increases, resulting in an excellent radon removal rate of more than 90 % in the 6 mm thick filter. From the experimental results, the panel-type activated carbon is considered to be available as an eco-friendly building material to reduce radon gas in an enclosed indoor environment.

Rear Vehicle Detection Method in Harsh Environment Using Improved Image Information (개선된 영상 정보를 이용한 가혹한 환경에서의 후방 차량 감지 방법)

  • Most of vehicle detection studies using the existing general lens or wide-angle lens have a blind spot in the rear detection situation, the image is vulnerable to noise and a variety of external environments. In this paper, we propose a method that is detection in harsh external environment with noise, blind spots, etc. First, using a fish-eye lens will help minimize blind spots compared to the wide-angle lens. When angle of the lens is growing because nonlinear radial distortion also increase, calibration was used after initializing and optimizing the distortion constant in order to ensure accuracy. In addition, the original image was analyzed along with calibration to remove fog and calibrate brightness and thereby enable detection even when visibility is obstructed due to light and dark adaptations from foggy situations or sudden changes in illumination. Fog removal generally takes a considerably significant amount of time to calculate. Thus in order to reduce the calculation time, remove the fog used the major fog removal algorithm Dark Channel Prior. While Gamma Correction was used to calibrate brightness, a brightness and contrast evaluation was conducted on the image in order to determine the Gamma Value needed for correction. The evaluation used only a part instead of the entirety of the image in order to reduce the time allotted to calculation. When the brightness and contrast values were calculated, those values were used to decided Gamma value and to correct the entire image. The brightness correction and fog removal were processed in parallel, and the images were registered as a single image to minimize the calculation time needed for all the processes. Then the feature extraction method HOG was used to detect the vehicle in the corrected image. As a result, it took 0.064 seconds per frame to detect the vehicle using image correction as proposed herein, which showed a 7.5% improvement in detection rate compared to the existing vehicle detection method.

GABA Productivity in Yoghurt Fermented by Freeze Dried Culture Preparations of Lactobacillus acidophilus RMK567 (Lactobacillus acidophilus RMK567의 동결건조 컬쳐로 제조한 요구르트에서 GABA 생성력)

  • γAminobutyric acid (GABA) producing lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus RMK567 was cultivated in 50 L of sterilized MRS broth using a fermenter at 40C for 24 h. The cell number was increased to 10.04±0.13 Log CFU/mL with a growth rate constant (k) of 0.454 generation/h and a generation time (g) of 2.303 h after a lapse of a lag phase (L) of 5.16 h. A total of 487 g of cell paste with 40.5% moisture was harvested with viable cell number of 12.48 Log CFU/g cell paste. The cell pastes after preparation with glycerol, glucose, and polydextrose as cryo-protectants were lyophilized under a vacuum of 84 m torr. A total of 408 g of freeze dried (FD) cell powders were mixed with a commercial strain of Streptococcus thermophilus to prepare of three types FD starter cultures with the viable cell numbers of 12.42 (FDA-GY), 12.60 (FDBGG) and 12.91 (FDC-GP) Log CFU/g. During preservation the FD cultures at -18C, the cell viability of the FD starter cultures were rapidly dropped to below 3.24% of the day of storage. No significant difference was found in the cell viabilities among three types of FD starters cultures, but significant difference (p<0.01) was found in storage periods. Yoghurts fermented through FD starter culture of L. acidophilus RMK567 were determined to contain 155.16±8.53 ppm, 243.82±4.27 ppm, and 198.64±23.46 ppm of GABA, respectively. This study shows that GABA production activity of L. acidophilus RMK567 is not affected during the freeze drying process and would be available for commercial production of yoghurt containing high GABA content.

Effects of 60Cogamma Radiation on Ricebran Oil (미강유에 대한 코발트 60-감마선의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The accumulation of peroxides, acid values, and carbonyl values during irradiation and post-irradiation storage of the ricebran oil has been studied. The rice bran oils were irradiated two doses of 2 and 7 megarads (300 rads/sec) at 23C atmospheric circumstance. The acid values, peroxide values and carbonyl values were measured at regular intervals of one week during the storage at 5C and 25C. 1) During the storage, the acid values of the irradiated rice bran oils increased or decreased insignificantly regardless of the addition of antioxidants and storage temperature. 2) The peroxide values were not increased continuously but increased zigzag. The result was indicated that the composition and decomposition of peroxides occurred continuously throughout the storage. 3) As the peroxide values increased, carbonyl values decreased and changed quite differently, but, especially in 7th week, they were constant or insignificant. 4) Dibutylhydroxytoluene is more effective than caffeic acid in retarding the formation of peroxides during irradiation of rice bran oils and post-irradiation storage. The effect of antioxidant is more efficient at 2 megarads than at 7 megarads irradiation. When we store the rice bran oil, the addition of antioxidants of post-irradiation is more desirable than that of preirradiation. 5) In spite of changing conditions such as storage temperature and addition of antioxidants, the peroxide values of rice bran oils irradiated at 2 megarads were always greater than those at 7 megarads during the storage. Peroxide values of samples at high temperature (25C) storage increased as twice as those of low temperature (5C) storage samples. At low temperature, peroxide values in the first week increased twice during the period of 8th weeks storage, but those did from three to four times at higher temperature in the same period Therefore, the low temperature storage is recommandable too.

Effects of Electrical Stimulation on Physicochemical and Rheological Properties of Plaice, Paralichthys olivaceus Muscle at Early Period after Death (전기자극이 넙치육의 사후조기의 물리화학적 및 물성적 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was undertaken to clarify the effects of electrical stimulation on physicochemical and rheological properties of the plaice (Paralichthys olivaceus) muscle at early period after death. The plaices were electrically stimulated in seawater bath (110V/60Hz) for 15sec., 35sec., and 60sec. and killed instantly with spiking at the head. Killed samples were stored at 5C, and the changes in rigor index, ATP breakdown, lactate accumulation, and breaking strength of muscle through storage were investigated. Electrical stimulation effectively accelerated rigor-mortis, lactate accumulation , and ATP breakdown. As the time of electrical stimulation was lengthened, the onset of rigor-mortis of all samples were accelerated Just after killing, and the amount of lactate was rapidly increased, But, significant differences were not observed in variance of rigor-mortis and lactate concentration. Electrically stimulated plaices showed decreasing in ATP to 4.58μmole/g for 15sec., 4.13μmole/g for 35sec., and 2.39μmole/g for 60sec. samples as compared with 5.5μmole/g of unstimulated samples. As the time of electrical stimulation was lengthened, ATP in samples were decomposed more rapidly. The rate constant of ATP breakdown were 0.244hr1 for 15sec., 0.358hr1 for 35sec., and 0.479hr1 for 60sec.. The level of breaking strength in muscle of the plaice was 1050.30±50.23g immediately after killing. Values of breaking strength in samples electrically stimulated for 35sec. increased rapidly just after killing among all samples. However, the breaking strength was not increased through the whole storage time in samples stimulated for 60sec.. The value and time roaching to the maximum breaking strength for each samples stimulated electrically for 15, 35 and 60 second were 1264.43±35.76g and 2hr, 1357.68±22.50g and Ohr, and 1012.18±57.36g and Ohr. Breaking strength in all samples electrically stimulated decreased significantly (P<0.05) after reaching the maximum values.

Thermal Stability of Israeli Carp Actomyosin and Its Protection by Chemical Additives (이스라엘 잉어 Actomyosin의 열안정성과 그 보호)

  • Effects of temperature and additives on the stability of actomyosin extracted from skeletal muscle of Israeli carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus, were studied by analyzing free SH-group, ATP-sensitivity and Ca-ATPase activity. The used additives were sucrose, sorbitol, Na-glutamate and L-cysteine. Furthermore, the denaturation constant(KD), protective effect(ΔE/M) and the other thermo-dynamic parameters on protein denaturation are systematically discussed. The actomyosin showed 4.124.68mg/ml in protein concentration, 2.632.93% in ribonucleic acid to the protein, 1:2.202.63 in the binding ratio of myosin and actin, 4.335.26% in fat content, 109.78 in ATP-sonsitivity, 0.1590.201μMPi/min/mgprotein in Ca-ATPase activity and 3.33.4M/105g-protein in free SH-group content. The first-order rate plots were obtained on the decrease of Ca-ATPase activity and ATP-sensitivity with an increase in temperature, while the free SH-group was increased to 60C and decreased rapidly above the temperature. The half-life of Ca-ATPase activity on the actomyosin Ca-ATPase was 280 min at 12C, 125 min at 20C, 55 min at 30C and 13 min at 40C, and activation energy, activation enthalpy, activation entropy and free energy of the proteins at 20C wene 5,395 cal/mole, 4,814 cal/mole, -40.42 e.u. and 17,626 cal/mole, respectively. The protective effect of the additives on the actomyosin Ca-ATPase showed that the most effective material is 3% sorbitol and followed in the order of 8% Na-glutamate, 1% sucrose and 1% L-cysteine. The actomyosin was more stable at 30C than at 0C and 20C. and when the additives were used in the low temperature storage, 8% Na-glutamate was the most effective. 3% sorbitol, 1% sucrose and 1% L-cysteine was to become lower in the order.

Osteogenesis of Human Adipose Tissue Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (ATMSCs) Seeded in Bioceramic-Poly D,L-Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid (PLGA) Scaffold (Bioceramic-Poly D,L-Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid(PLGA) Scaffold에 접종한 인간지방조직-유래 중간엽 줄기세포의 골 형성)

  • The present experiment was performed to evaluate the osteogenic differentiation of human adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells (ATMSCs) seeded in bioceramic-poly D,L-latic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) scaffold. Osteogenic differentiation of ATMSCs were induced using the osteogenic induction (OI) medium. ATMSCs were cultured with OI medium during 28 days in well plate. The proliferation of ATMSCs in OI medium group was significantly increased for 14 days of plate culture but slowed after 21 days. On the other hand, proliferation in the control group showed constant increase for 28 days of culturing. The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of ATMSCs in OI medium group increased during the 21 days of culture but decreased on 28 days. However, in control group ALP activity of ATMSCs was continuously decreased as time goes. Nodule was observed at 21 days of culture in OI medium group and confirmed accumulation of calcium in cell by alizarin red staining. ATMSCs were seeded in PLGA scaffold or in Bioceramic-PLGA scaffold, and cultured with OI medium. ALP activity of ATMSCs by osteoblast differentiation in each scaffold increased on 21 days of culture and decreased rapidly on 28 days. ALP activity of ATMSCs was increased highly in Bioceramic-PLGA scaffold compared to PLGA scaffold on 21 days of culturing. SEM-EDS analysis demonstrated that calcium and phosphate content and Ca/P ratio in Bioceramic-PLGA scaffold increased higher than in PLGA scaffold. Biodegradability of scaffold at 56 days after implantation showed that Bioceramic-PLGA scaffold was more biodegradable than PLGA scaffold. The results demonstrated that the differentiation of ATMSCs to osteoblast were more effective in scaffold culture than well plate culture. Bioceramic increased cell adhesion rate on scaffold and ALP activity by osteoblast differentiation. Also, bioceramic was considered to increase the calcium and phosphate in scaffold when ATMSCs was mineralized by osteogenic differentiation. Bioceramic-PLGA scaffold enhanced the osteogenesis of seeded ATMSCs compared to PLGA scaffold.

Strain Improvement of Leuconostoc mesenteroides as a Acid-Resistant Mutant and Effect on Kimchi fermentation as a Starter (Leuconostoc mesenteroides의 내산성 변이주의 김치발효에 미치는 효과)

  • An organic acid tolerance mutant (M-200) was obtained from Leuconostoc mesenteroides KCCM 35471, followed by the screening procedure using a specific organic acid medium (lactic acid: acetic acid, 2:1). The characteristics of the acid tolerance M-200 and the wild type LM-W were examined at various temperature and pH ranges (l030C of temp, 3.5-4.5 of pH). The growth of strain M-200 at HCl adjusted medium (10CandpH3.5) was observed. In the case of organic acid adjusted medium, the strain showed its growth at the pH range of 3.8. When the strain M-200 was used as a starter for Kimchi fermentation, a constant acid level (0.55) was observed during the whole fermentation period. This result indicates that the strain produces a proper level of acid content for the Kimchi fermentation. This result also indicates that the edible period of Kimchi can be extended to 3.5 fold compare to the result obtained from the LM-W used Kimchi fermentation. However the excess use of the strain M-200 showed the inhibition of growth of Lactobacillus plantarum, low lactic acid level content and low level of organoleptic test. In the case of organic acid content during the Kimchi fermentation, the strain M-200 showed relatively low production rate compare to the wild type (M-200: 3.5 mg/L at 21 days of fermentation, LM-W: 7 mg/L at 21 days of fermentation). Therefore a mixed Kimchi starter containing M-200 and other strains probably maintain a good Kimchi quality during the fermentation.

Survival Strategy of Dominant Diatom Chaetoceros debilis and Leptocylindrus danicus as Southwestern parts of East Sea - The availability of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen under Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen-limited Environments (동해 남서해역에서 우점 규조류 Chaetoceros debilis와 Leptocylindrus danicus의 생존전략 - 용존 무기 질소 제한 환경에서 용존 유기 질소의 이용가능성)

  • The bioavailability of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) by dominant species Chaetoceros debilis and Leptocylindrus danicus under dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN)-limited condition in the southwestern East Sea was conducted to assess the quantitative evaluation using growth kinetic experiment. Nitrogen sources were nitrate and ammonium as DIN, glycine and urea, which is portion component of DON in East Sea. Maximum specific growth rate (μmax) and half-saturation constant (Ks) of C. debilis calculated from Monod equations were estimated to be 1.50day1 and 1.62μM in nitrate, 1.13day1 and 6.97μM in ammonium, 1.46day1 and 3.36μM in glycine, 0.93day1 and 0.55μM in urea, respectively. Also, L. danics was estimated to be 1.55day1 and 5.21μM in nitrate, 1.57day1 and 4.57μM in ammonium, 1.47day1 and 3.80μM in glycine, 1.42day1 and 1.94μM in urea, respectively. Both C. debilis and L. dancius have higher affinity of urea than DIN. The high affinity of urea was indicated that the dominant species were able to growth using urea under DIN-limited conditions. Thus, DON utilization of phytoplankton may be one of the important dominant strategy under DIN-limited environments such as southwestern East Sea.

Effects of Sodium Sulfite and Extrusion on the Nutritional Value of Soybean Products for Nursery Pigs

  • Three hundred nursery pigs were used in two growth assays (avg initial BW of 6.5 and 6.0 kg, respectively) to determine the effects of sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) as an extrusion aid for soy products used in diets for weanling pigs. In Exp. 1, treatments were arranged as 3×2 factorial with main effects of soy product [soybean meal (SBM), extruded SBM, and dry-extruded whole soybeans (DEWS)] and concentration of Na2SO3 (0 and 10 g/kg of soy product). The extruded SBM and DEWS treatments were processed in a dry extruder (InstaPro(R), Triple F Nutrition, Des Moines, IA) with barrel temperatures and throughputs of 169C and 578 kg/h, and 147C and 598 kg/h, respectively. All diets were formulated to 3.5 Mcal/kg DE, with 0.92% lysine for d 0 to 14, and 0.76% lysine for d 14 to 28. For d 0 to 14, there was a tendency for pigs fed diets with Na2SO3 to have greater ADG (p<0.08), and pigs fed SBM to have greater ADFI (p<0.02), thus pigs fed the extruded soy products has 15% greater gain/feed than those fed SBM (p<0.007). For d 14 to 28, there were no differences in ADG or gain/feed among pigs fed diets with SBM and those fed diets with the extruded soy products (p>0.15). However, pigs fed DEWS had greater ADG than pigs fed extruded SBM, and pigs fed Na2SO3 had greater ADG and ADFI compared to those not fed Na2SO3 (p<0.02 and 0.08, respectively). The positive response in ADG and gain/feed to the addition of Na2SO3 resulted with SBM and extruded SBM treatments, and not with DEWS (interaction effect, p<0.04). Overall (d 0 to 28), pigs fed DEWS had greater ADG (p<0.01) and gain/feed (p<0.08) than pigs fed extruded SBM. Also pigs fed diets with Na2SO3 had greater ADG, ADFI, and gain/feed compared to those fed diets without Na2SO3 (p<0.002, 0.04, and 0.04, respectively). Exp. 2 was designed as a 2×3 factorial with main effects of soy product (SBM and DEWS) and concentration of Na2SO3 (none, 7.5, and 15.0 g/kg of soy product). As in Exp. 1, all diets were formulated to 3.5 Mcal/kg DE, with 0.92% lysine for d 0 to 13, and 0.76% lysine for d 13 to 53. At a constant processing temperature (148 to 149C, Na2SO3 increased throughput of the extruder (578, 595, and 602 kg/h for the 0, 7.5, and 15.0 g/kg additions, respectively). For d 0 to 13, treatment had no effect on ADG or ADFI, but gain/feed decreased for pigs fed SBM with increasing concentrations of Na2SO3, and increased for pigs fed DEWS with increasing concentrations of Na2SO3 (SBM vs DEWS sulfite quadratic interaction, p<0.03). For d 13 to 35, pigs fed DEWS had greater ADG (p<0.01) and gain/feed (p<0.001) than pigs fed SBM. Also, ADFI decreased and gain/feed increased with increasing concentrations of Na2SO3 (linear effects, p<0.04 and 0.01, respectively). Overall, pigs fed the diets with DEWS had greater ADG and gain/feed than pigs fed SBM (p<0.003 and 0.002, respectively), and Na2SO3 tended to decrease ADFI and increase gain/feed (linear effects, p<0.07 and 0.06, respectively). In conclusion, pigs fed DEWS had greater rate and efficiency of gain than pigs fed SBM. Also, adding Na2SO3 prior to extrusion increased yield and feed efficiency.
