P-PIE 프로그램을 이용한 배관에서의 누설확률 평가 (Evaluation of Leak Probability in Pipes using P-PIE Program)

  • P-PIE is a program developed to estimate failure probability of pipes and pressure vessels considering fatigue and stress corrosion crack growth. Using the program, crack growth simulation was performed with an initially existing crack in order to examine the effects of initial crack depth distribution on the leak probability of pipes. In the simulation stress corrosion crack growth was considered and several crack depth distribution models were used. From the results it was found that the initial crack depth distribution gives great effect on the leak probability of pipes. The log-normal distribution proposed by Khaleel and Simonen gives lower leak probability compared other exponential distribution models. The effects of the number and the quality of pre-service and in-service inspections on the leak probability were also examined and it was recognized that the number and the quality of pre-service and in-service inspections are also give great effect on the leak probability. In order to reduce the leak probability of pipes in plants it is very important to improve the quality of inspections. When in-service inspection is performed every 10 years and the quality of inspection is above the very good level, the leak probability shows nearly constant value after the first inspection for an initially existing crack.

Infilled steel tubes as reinforcement in lightweight concrete columns: An experimental investigation and image processing analysis

  • Under constant and cyclic axial compression, square composite short columns reinforced with Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) added with scrap rubber infilled inside steel tubes and with different types of concrete were cast and tested. The test is carried out to find the effectiveness of utilizing an aggregate manufactured from industrial waste and to address the problems associated with the need for alternative reinforcements along with waste management. The main testing parameters are the type of concrete, the effect of fiber inclusion, and the significance of rubber-infilled steel tubes. The failure modes of the columns and axial load-displacement curves of the steel tube-reinforced columns were all thoroughly investigated. According to the test results, all specimens failed due to compression failure with a longitudinal crack along the loading axis. The fiber-reinforced column specimens demonstrated improved ductility and energy absorption. In comparison to the normal-weight concrete columns, the lightweight concrete columns significantly improved the axial load-carrying capacity. The addition of basalt fiber to the columns significantly increased the yield stress and ultimate stress to 9.21%. The corresponding displacement at yield load and ultimate load was reduced to 10.36% and 28.79%, respectively. The precision of volumetric information regarding the obtained crack quantification, aggregates, and the fiber in concrete is studied in detail through image processing using MATLAB environment.

Cyclic behavior of various sands and structural materials interfaces

  • This paper presents the results of an intensive experimental investigation on cyclic behavior of various sands and structural materials interface. Comprehensive measurements of the horizontal displacement and shear stresses developed during testing were performed using an automated constant normal load (CNL) cyclic direct shear test apparatus. Two different particle sizes (0.5 mm-0.25 mm and, 2.0 mm-1.0 mm) of sands having distinct shapes (rounded and angular) were tested in a cyclic direct shear testing apparatus at two vertical stress levels (${\sigma}=50kPa$, and 100 kPa) and two rates of displacement ($R_D=2.0mm/min$, and 0.025 mm/min) against various structural materials (i.e., steel, concrete, and wood). The cyclic direct shear tests performed during this investigation indicate that (i) the shear stresses developed during shearing highly depend on both the shape and size of sand grains; (ii) characteristics of the structural materials are closely related to interface response; and (iii) the rate of displacement is slightly effective on the results.

A reinforced concrete frame element with shear effect

  • A novel flexibility-based 1D element that captures the material nonlinearity and second order P-$\Delta$ effects within a reinforced concrete frame member is developed. The formulation is developed for 2D planar frames in the modified fiber element framework but can readily be extended to 3D cases. The nonlinear behavior of concrete including cracking and crushing is taken into account through a modified hypo-elastic model. A parabolic and a constant shear stress distribution are used at section level to couple the normal and tangential tractions at material level. The lack of objectivity due to softening of concrete is addressed and objectivity of the response at the material level is attained by using a technique derived from the crack band approach. Finally the efficiency and accuracy of the formulation is compared with experimental results and is demonstrated by some numerical examples.

굴착면 거칠기를 고려한 암반 근입 현장타설말뚝의 주면하중전이 특성 (Load Transfer Characteristics of Rock-Socketed Drilled Shafts Considering Hole Roughness)

  • In this study, using constant normal stiffness(CNS) direct shear tests, side shear load distribution were analyzed by the influencing parameters of unconfined compressive strength, surface roughness, confining stress, and material properties. Based on the CNS tests, side shear load transfer function of drilled shafts in rock is proposed using geological strength index(GSI), which indicates discontinuity and surface condition of rock mass in Hoek-Brown criterion. Though comparisons with results of nine drilled shafts's load tests, it is found that the load-transfer curve by this study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of bearing capacity of drilled shaft.

On the origin of exponential growth in induced earthquakes in Groningen

  • The Groningen gas field shows exponential growth in earthquake event counts around a magnitude M1 with a doubling time of 6-9 years since 2001. This behavior is identified with dimensionless curvature in land subsidence, which has been evolving at a constant rate over the last few decades essentially uncorrelated to gas production. We demonstrate our mechanism by a tabletop crack formation experiment. The observed skewed distribution of event magnitudes is matched by that of maxima of event clusters with a normal distribution. It predicts about one event < M5 per day in 2025, pointing to increasing stress to human living conditions.

하중조건별 시험이 가능한 암석 절리편 전단시험의 개발 및 적용시험 (Development of Direct Shear Apparatus with Different Loading Conditions for Rock Joints and Its Application Tests)

  • 자연암석절리 및 인공 절리에 대하여 일정수직응력제어, 일정 수직하중제어 그리고 무한 강성제어가 가능한 암석 절리면 전단기 시험기를 개발하였다. 이 시험기는 전단변위에 의한 첩촉면적의 변화량을 계산하여 하중변화량을 조절하여 일정수직응력상태를 유지한다. 수직하중에 따른 시험기 강성에 의한 변화향이 제어 프로그램 내에서 제어되어 순수한 시편의 변위량을 출력하도록 하였다. 전단하중에 따른 시험기 강성에 의한 변위량은 상, 하부 전단상자의 상대변위 측정으로 최소화하였다. 전단거동 중의 자유도는 전당방향에 대하여 수평이도, 연직이동, 피칭, 롤링이 가능하도록 하였다. 자연절리면을 모사한 석고시편에 대하여 일정 수직응력 제어, 일정수직하중제어 그리고 무한 강성제어 조건으로 시험하여 제어상태 검증 및 비교를 하였다. 또한 경사각이 16.7˚와 22.6˚인 톱니형 시편에 대하여 시험한 결과 경사각 16.7˚와 22.6˚는 JRC로 10과 15를 나타내었으며, 첨두팽창각이 첨두전단강도에서 발생되며, Barton의 모델과 잘 일치함을 보였다.

The competing roles of extensional viscosity and normal stress differences in complex flows of elastic liquids

  • In various attempts to relate the behaviour of highly-elastic liquids in complex flows to their rheometrical behaviour, obvious candidates for study have been the variation of shear viscosity with shear rate, the two normal stress differences $N_1$ and $N_2$, especially $N_1$, and the extensional viscosity $\eta_E$. In this paper, we shall be mainly interested in 'constant-viscosity' Boger fluids, and, accordingly, we shall limit attention to $N_1$ and $\eta_E$. We shall concentrate on two important flows - axisymmetric contraction flow and "splashing" (particularly that which arises when a liquid drop falls onto the tree surface of the same liquid). Modern numerical techniques are employed to provide the theoretical predictions. It is shown that the two obvious manifestations of viscoelastic rheometrical behaviour can sometimes be opposing influences in determining flow characteristics. Specifically, in an axisymmetric contraction flow, high $\eta_E$ can retard the flow, whereas high $N_1$ can have the opposite effect. In the splashing experiment, high $\eta_E$ can certainly reduce the height of the so-called Worthington jet, thus confirming some early suggestions, but, again, other rheometrical influences can also have a role to play and the overall picture may not be as clear as it was once envisaged.

Investigation of shear behavior of soil-concrete interface

  • The shear behavior of soil-concrete interface is mainly affected by the surface roughness of the two contact surfaces. The present research emphasizes on investigating the effect of roughness of soil-concrete interface on the interface shear behavior in two-layered laboratory testing samples. In these specially prepared samples, clay silt layer with density of $2027kg/m^3$ was selected to be in contact a concrete layer for simplifying the laboratory testing. The particle size testing and direct shear tests are performed to determine the appropriate particles sizes and their shear strength properties such as cohesion and friction angle. Then, the surface undulations in form of teeth are provided on the surfaces of both concrete and soil layers in different testing carried out on these mixed specimens. The soil-concrete samples are prepared in form of cubes of 10*10*30 cm. in dimension. The undulations (inter-surface roughness) are provided in form of one tooth or two teeth having angles $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, respectively. Several direct shear tests were carried out under four different normal loads of 80, 150, 300 and 500 KPa with a constant displacement rate of 0.02 mm/min. These testing results show that the shear failure mechanism is affected by the tooth number, the roughness angle and the applied normal stress on the sample. The teeth are sheared from the base under low normal load while the oblique cracks may lead to a failure under a higher normal load. As the number of teeth increase the shear strength of the sample also increases. When the tooth roughness angle increases a wider portion of the tooth base will be failed which means the shear strength of the sample is increased.

환경하중과 차량하중에 의한 줄눈콘크리트포장의 극한인장응력 특성 분석 (Features of Critical Tensile Stresses in Jointed Concrete Pavements under Environmental and Vehicle Loads)

  • 본 연구는 줄눈콘크리트포장에 환경 하중과 차량하중이 작용할 때 콘크리트 슬래브의 상하부에 발생하는 최대 인장응력의 특성을 분석하기 위하여 수행되었다. 유한요소법을 이용한 줄눈콘크리트포장의 수치해석모형을 개발하여 우선 포장이 환경 하중 또는 차량하중 만을 받을 때의 응력 특성을 분석하였다. 그 후 환경 하중과 차량하중을 동시에 받을 때 슬래브 상하부의 응력 특성을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 차량하중에 의한 슬래브 하부의 최대 인장응력은 하중이 어느 정도 줄눈부에서 멀어지면 위치에 관계없이 거의 같아지게 되는 젓을 알 수 있었다. 환경 하중에 의해 슬래브가 컬다운 되었을 때는 차량하중이 슬래브의 중앙에 작용할 때 슬래브 하부에 최대인장응력이 발생하며 슬래브가 컬업 되었을 때는 차량하중이 줄눈부에 작용할 때 슬래브의 상부에 최대인장응력이 발생한다. 슬래브 하부 최대인장응력은 컬다운 상태에서는 하부층 일반 스프링을 사용한 모델을 이용하여 환경 하중과 차량하중에 의한 각각의 최대응력을 더하여 구할 수 있으며, 컬업 상태에서는 차량 하중에 의한 최대 응력에서 온도 하중에 의한 최대 응력을 감하여 구할 수 있다. 반면에 슬래브 상부 최대인장응력은 컬업 상태에서 하부층 무인장 스프링을 이용한 모델을 사용하여 환경하중에 대한 최대응력과 차량하중이 줄눈부에 작용할 때 슬래브 중앙부의 최대응력을 더하여 구할 수 있으나 하부층을 일반 스프링으로 모델링하여 환경 하중에 대한 최대응력 만을 구하여 사용하는 실용적인 방법도 있었다.
