  • In this paper, we describe the design of the ATM adapter circuit in the BSC for IMT-2000 Network. This ATM adapter circuit can convert received ATM cell into TDM data in the BSC and vice versa. In the ATM adapter, we implemented both AAL1 and AAL5 functions to provide constant bit rate voice data and variable bit rate packet data servives, simultaneously.

  • Video-On-Demand servers use compression techniques to reduce the storage and bandwidth requirements. The compression techniques make the bit rates of compressed video data significantly variable from frame to frame. Consequently, Video-On-Demand servers with a constant bit rate retrieval can not maximize the utilization of resources. It is possible that when variable bit rate video data is stored, accurate description of the bit rate changes could be computed a priori. In this paper, I propose a buffer management scheme called MAX for Video-On-Demand server using variable bit rate continuous media. By caching and prefetching the data, MAX buffer management scheme reduces the variation of the compressed data and increases the number of clients simultaneously served and maximizes the utilization of system resources. Results of trace-driven simulations show the effectiveness of the scheme.

  • In this work, a new rate control algorithm for transmission of H.264/AVC video bit stream through CBR(constant bit rate) channel is proposed. The proposed algorithm predicts target bit rate and MAD(mean of absolute difference) for current frame considering image complexity variance between neighboring backward and current images. In details, respective linear regression analysis for MAD and encoded bit rate against image complexity variance produce correlation parameters. Additionally, it uses frame skip technique to maintain bit stream within a manageable range and protect buffer from overflow or underflow. Implementation and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can provide accurate bit allocation, and can effectively visual degradation after scene changes. Also our proposed algorithm encodes the video sequences with less frame skipping compared to the existing rate control for H.264/AVC.

  • In this paper, we design the robust H$_{\infty}$ controller for congestion control in ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks with the variation of other higher priority sources(e.g., constant bit rate, variable bit rate). Since ABR (available bit rate) sources share the bottleneck node with other higher priority sources, we design the controller which guarantees robustness against time delay and disturbance. The proposed robust H$_{\infty}$ controller with regional pole placements can minimize the variation of the queue size at the predefined desired level. And we also show its robustness through simulation for the ATM networks with time delay and disturbance.

  • The video coding for very low bit-rate has recently received considerable attention, but the conventional coding schemes with block based transform suffer from the blocky effect for the constraints of limited bit-rate. In this paper, we present a video coding system based on wavelet transform and multiresolution motion estimation/compensation for very low bit-rate video. The proposed scheme uses the wavelet transform which is flexible to represent non-stationary image signals and adaptable to the human visual characteristics. The wavelet transformed coefficients are coded by various coding modes in accordance with the sum of absolute error after motion estimation/compensation in wavelet decomposed domain. And simple buffer control technique is applied to handle constant image quality. It is shown that the presented scheme has more acceptable image quality without blocky effects than conventional block based transform video coding.

  • The burst is to require abruptly high transmission rate in case of transmitting pre-stored variable bit rate video data, and it causes to be inefficient use of network resource, resource reservation. To avoid these problems, smoothing is transmission plan where variable rate video data is converted to a constant bit rate stream. These smoothing algorithms include CBA, MCBA, MVBA and others. To evaluate amount of burst reduction in the existing CBA, MCBA, MVBA algorithm, this paper compares the burst-related-factors of transmission plan in smoothing algorithms with original video sources which were stored Variable Bit Rate. There are maximum frame bytes, maximum GOP bytes, transmission rate variability per frame, transmission rate variability per GOP in burst-related evaluation factors. Experimental result shows burst-related factors of smoothing algorithms which were used for experiment lower than that of pre-stored video data, except special case.

  • Conventional rate control (RC) schemes for H.264 video coding usually regulate output bit rate to match channel bandwidth by adjusting quantization parameter (QP) at fixed full frame rate, and the passive frame skipping to avoid buffer overflow usually occurs when scene changes or high motions exist in video sequences especially at low bit rate, which degrades spatial-temporal quality and causes jerky effect. In this paper, an active content adaptive frame skipping scheme is proposed instead of passive methods, which skips subjectively trivial frames by structural similarity (SSIM) measurement between the original frame and the interpolated frame via motion vector (MV) copy scheme. The saved bits from skipped frames are allocated to coded key ones to enhance their spatial quality, and the skipped frames are well recovered based on MV copy scheme from adjacent key ones at the decoder side to maintain constant frame rate. Experimental results show that the proposed active SSIM-based frameskip scheme acquires better and more consistent spatial-temporal quality both in objective (PSNR) and subjective (SSIM) sense with low complexity compared to classic fixed frame rate control method JVT-G012 and prior objective metric based frameskip method.

  • In this paper, we present a new macroblock-based bit allocation scheme in multiple MPEG-1 video encoders system and a single multiplexer over a single channel. The proposed scheme models the relations between fate(Bits/MB) and distortion(MSE/MB), rate and quantizer parameter(QP), distortion and quantizer parameter, respectively, in the same form. By using these relations, we minimize the Larangian cost function to obtain a bit allocation scheme based on macroblock unit. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can reduce MSE compared to other conventional buffer-based rate control methods, i.e. independent buffer control method and shared common buffer control one. And we confirmed, through computer simulation, that the proposed scheme can be effectively modified to maintain the objective quality of a specific video service at a constant level.

  • In this paper, an adaptive minimum transmit power modulation scheme under constant data rate and fixed bit error rate (BER) for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is proposed. It adjusts the modulation order and allocates the transmit power to each spatial sub-channel when meeting the user's requirements at the cost of minimum transmission power. Compared to the other algorithm, it can obtain good performance with lower computational complexity and can be applied to the wireless communication system. Computer simulation results present the efficiency of the proposed scheme. And its performance under different channel condition has been compared with the other algorithm.

  • Video-On-Demand servers have to provide timely processing guarantees and reduce the storage and reduce the storage and bandwidth requirements for continuous media However, compression techniques used in Video-On-Demand servers make the bit rates of compressed video data significantly variable from frame to frame Consequently, most pervious Video-On-Demand servers which use constant bit rate retrieval to guarantee deterministic service under-utilize the system resources and restrict the number of clients. In this paper, I propose a buffer management scheme called CAP(Caching And Prefetching) for Video-On-Demand server using variable bit rate continuous media. By caching and prefetching the data CAP reduces the variation of the compressed data and increases the number of clients simultaneously served and maximizes the utilization of system resources. Results of trace-driven simulations show the effectiveness of the scheme.
