  • For a commonly used piezocone with a shoulder filter element, dilatory dissipation behavior, which shows an initial temporary increase in pore pressure, has been observed in overconsolidated cohesive soils. However, there is no appropriate way to estimate a consolidation parameter from a dilatory dissipation curve because currently available interpretation methods were developed based on the monotonic decrease of the excess pore pressure. In this study, the interpretation method for evaluation of coefficient of consolidation from a dilatory dissipation result of piezocone test was developed by performing the finite difference analysis on the dissipation after cone penetration. The distribution of the initial excess pore pressure induced by cone penetration, which is the core of the analysis, was estimated from the empirical modification of a solution proposed by cavity expansion theory and critical state concept. And the proposed interpretation method was applied to the field piezocone data and the results were compared to those obtained from laboratory tests. Its reliability was confirmed by the insignificant difference between the values of coefficient of consolidation from piezocone tests and laboratory consolidation tests.

  • Several researchers have developed a number of theoretical time factors to determine the coefficient of consolidation by biezocone excess pore water dissipation test in soft clay deposits. However, depending on the assumptions and analytical techniques, the estimated coefficient of consolidation could be in a considerably wide range even for a specific degree of consolidation. These solutions are obtained from an initial excess porewater pressure distribution which can be determined from. either the cavity expansion theory or the strain path method. The 야ssipation of the initial excess porelvater pressure has been usally simulated by means of linear-uncoupled consolidation analysis and then the dissipation curve is normalized by the initial excess porewater pressure for easy use. However. since there is no guidelines or rules on which method gives the best solution for obtaining the coefficient of consolidation from the dissipation curve, the final selection was only based on engineer's extrience and Judgements. Thus, such an arbitrary selection might be inappropriate for a specific site to characterize the consolidation behavior. In this paper, we reviewed various theoretical time factors and, based on this consideration, we mentioned needs for researches in selecting a specific solution that is compatible for Korean clays. Also we listed some source of errors that can be encountered in the procedure of dissipation analysis.

  • We have remolded marine clay sample collected along the vertical and horizontal directions and investigated the characteristics of the consolidation constants by SCT and CRSC methods. We have studied also on consolidation chracteristics and application for weathered granite soil using SCT and CRSC methods for undisturbed and disturbed samples. As the result, values of pre-consolidation stress, compression index, excessive pore pressure, pore water pressure ratio of the marine-clay were different due to different test methods(SCT and CRSC) and sampling directions(vortical and horizontal directions). Disturbed and undisturbed samples of the weathered granite soil have showed similar change aspect like marine clay during over-consolidatied and normally consolidatied stages.

  • A horizontal drain method, which applies vacuum pressure at the end of a horizontal drain for discharging pore water, is used often for improving surface reclaimed clay in the field. In this study, to examine the effectiveness of improving consolidation or shear strength depends by varying vacuum pressure, laboratory chamber horizontal drain test using vacuum pressure is performed and the results is compared with that of self-weight consolidation. The results show that water content reduces with the increase of soil depth in case of self-weight consolidation, while it reduces near the horizontal drain and increases with the increase of the distance from the horizontal drain in case of applying vacuum pressure. The shear strength of dredged soil was improved as well, when the vacuum pressure is applied. The optimized consolidation was achieved at the vacuum pressure range of 30 to 50kPa in the laboratory box test of 50cm wide, considering the range of drain interval in the field was between 0.7 and 1.2m.

  • In this research, an attempt is made to derive the practical estimation of the degree of consolidation in soft clay from field measurements under embankments. For the practical estimation of pore water pressure in soft clay, the elasto-viscous rheological model was proposed, with a transform of parameters and a field geotechnical measurements in southern Korea. By using the rheological properties of soft clays and the dissipation of excess pore water pressure behaviour during step loading, a degree of consolidation or pore water pressure estimation in the future can be performed, and are shown to be generally close to the field measurements of pore water pressure. Finally, a pore water pressure behaviour in soft clay can be explained through measured data in field and the excess pore water pressure data can also be used to estimate settlement.

  • In this research, an analytical solution for the coefficient of permeability of soils during consolidation is suggested. The pore pressure and the flow rate measurements at different locations during consolidation are utilized. The void ratio and volume compressibility of soils under consolidation are also estimated. A large consolidation testing device, possible in both vertical and radial drainage is designed and manufactured. And consolidation test with kaolinite soils were performed under radially inward drainage direction. Pore pressures in varying radial distances and flow rate with time were measured as well as vertical deformations. From the test results, the changes of permeability, volume compressibility and void ratio under consolidation and their spatial variations are estimated. Thus the proposed solution is verified by comparing with the experimentally estimated test results. In addition, it is confirmed that permeability, void ratio and volume compressibility decrease as consolidation and loading steps progress. Also, these soil characteristics increase with radial distant from drainage boundary, where lowest values observed, and slightly decrease as approaching undrained boundary.

  • When a structure is built on the consolidation ground, the instant elastic deflection occures according to the characteristics of the ground and the load on it. And the corresponding contact pressure is established. But, as time passes, the secondary consolidating deflection is added to the instant elastic deflection, the upper structure, due to its flexural rigidity, resist to the additional curvature. So the variation of the contact pressure occurs. And this new contact pressure exerts influence on the consolidation form again. The new consolidation form exerts influence on the contact pressure in return. This kind of interaction continues till all the consolidation of the ground is finished. So the consolidation problem can not be definded as the linear problem. This paper intends to scheme an approximate iteration method to analyse this non-linear interaction problem between the upper structure and the lower consolidation ground which supports the former.

  • Compression index is one of the important characteristic numbers in soft soil engineering. Since 1940's, many researchers have suggested various practical solutions to define the compression index of clay using other soil properties. But, these results are only can give us an outline of soft soil behavior. In this study, the relationships between pore water pressure dissipation test results and compression index were suggested using comparison results of both tests. This relationships are based on basic concept of consolidation phenomena, essential difference between pore water pressure dissipation test and consolidation test, and disagreements between theoretical time factor and real time factor. To identify proportional factor of proposed equation, Geotechnical investigation results of Kwang-Yang(KY) site and Busan New Port(BN) site were used. The proportional factor was 0.0031 from 20 to 50% of consolidation rate where correlation parameter($R^2$) is 0.9051.

  • The consolidation results of fine tungsten powders, W-Cu composite and W/Cu FGM by using a novel method combining resistance sintering with ultra high pressure have been reviewed. The densification effects of the consolidation parameters, including pressure, input power and sintering time, have been investigated. The sintering mechanism of this method was quite different from other sintering methods. Particle rearrangement, sliding, distortion and crushing due to the ultra high pressure are the dominant mehanisms at the initial stage, then the dominant sintering mechanisms are transient arc-fused processes controlled by the input power.

  • Glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites were manufactured by Rapid Press Consolidation Technique(RPCT) as functions of temperature, pressure and time in pre-heating, consolidation and solidification sections during the manufacturing processing. It was found that the material property is greatly affected by pre-heating temperature under vacuum, mold temperature and molding pressure. Among them, the temperature In the mold was the most critical factor in determining the mechanical properties and the molded conditions of specimen. The crystallinity of PET matrix was also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurements for various processing conditions. The level of crystallinity($X_c$) depended strongly on the mold temperature, cooling rate and the type of composite. The difference in $X_c$ is believed to be one of important factors in characterizing the mechanical properties.
