This paper describes a proper criterion for the constant rate of loading consolidation (CRLC) test which is a kind of the continuous loading consolidation(CRLS) and widely used as alternative methods to the incremental loading consolidation(ILC)test. With those results, the preconsolidation pressure estimated by the CRLC test turned out to be comparatively larger than that of the ILC test and it is increased in proportion to the applied loading rates. However, the compression index in the CRLC test is less ifluenced on by the loading rates. The coeffcient of consolidation and permeability in the CRLC test are dependent on excess pore pressure ratio mainly. In other words, if the pore pressure ratios are too low, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become smaller than those of the ILC test. On the other hand, if the excess pore pressure ratios are too high, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become so larger than those of the ILC test. Therefore loading rates should be carefully determined to generate proper excess pore pressure ratio.
In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by PVD were carried out, in order to investigate the consolidation promotion effect considering PVD width and surcharge pressure. In the numerical analyses, an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method was applied, in which the applicability of numerical analyses could be confirmed comparing with consolidation behavior simulated at the laboratory. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, consolidation behaviors of soft clay ground with elapsed time was elucidated, together with the effects of PVD width and surcharge pressure.

The purpose of this study is to establish a proper criterion for the constant rate of loading consolidation(CRLC) test which is a kind of the continuous loading consolidation(CLC) and widely used as alternative methods to the incremental loading consolidation(ILC)test. With those results, the preconsolidation pressure estimated by the CRLC test turned out to be comparatively larger than that of the ILC test, and it is increased in proportion to the applied loading rates. However, the compression index in the CRLC test is less influenced on by the loading rates. The coefficient of consolidation and permeability in the CRLC test are dependent on excess pore pressure ratio mainly. In other words, if the pore pressure ratios are too low, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become smaller than those of the ILC test. On the other hand, if the excess pore pressure ratios are too high, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become so larger than those of the ILC test. Therefore, loading rates should be carefully determined to generate proper excess pore pressure ratio inside the soil specimen. From this study, good results are obtained from the CRLC test if the excess pore pressure ratios were in the range of 2.5 to 6.0 %, performed with loading rates between 0.0015 and 0.005 $kgf/cm^2/min$.

The needs for reproducing in situ neutral pressure, and for having fully saturated specimens and pore pressure measuring system for consoildation testing were examined in respect to pore pressure development. undisturbed specimens of a sensitive development. undisturbed specimens of a sensitive marine soft clay were tested in the ANTEUS consolidometer with the application of four different magnitudes of back pressure(0,5, 40 and $70lb/in^2$) in order to investigate the effect of back pressure on pore pressure development during consolidation test. The effect of back pressure on pore pressure development during consolidation is striking for back pressure up to $40lb/in^2$) but, above this value, no measurable effects of back pressure variations on pore pressure development are evidenced.

The estimation of consolidation rate is one of the important factors in the construction on soft clayey deposits. A number of researches are carried out to predict the consolidation behavior in field, however, most of the results show the discrepancies between the prediction and observation. This paper analyzes consolidation behavior of normally consolidated clay in K/sub o/ condition with 2-dimensional drainage by use of the numerical methods. Elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses are compared in terms of the dissipation of excess pore pressure. These results are also compared with Terzaghi-Rendulic's equation that is implemented by finite difference method. The consolidation time calculated by using elastic model is found to be similar to the result of Terzaghi-Rendulic's equation. The consolidation predicted by MCC model takes more time than other cases. Initial increase of excess pore pressure in radial drainage can be shown, however, this phenomenon does not have a significant effect on tile final consolidation time.

The traditional concept after Terzaghi was that consolidation was the dissipation process of pore water pressure compatible to external loading which was generated immediately after the loading. However, a theory of one-dimensional consolidation based on elasto-viscous liquid model proposed by Yoshikuni(1994) explained that the process of primary and secondary consolidation was considered to be not a simple process of dissipation of pore water pressure but a simultaneous process of dissipation and generation by external loading. This study attempts to demonstrate general consolidation behaviour of clayey soils including effects of consolidation history, load increment and thickness of cohesive layer by one-dimensional Finite Difference Method(F.D.M) analysis from the viewpoint of elasto-viscous consolidation theory.

A theoretical equation was proposed to consider the effect of fill and ponding for the excess pore water pressure in agricultural reservoir on soft clay ground. For the purpose of verification of the proposed equation, laboratory model tests and field tests were performed and excess pore water pressure was compared to those predicted with the Terzaghi's method. The degree of consolidation according to ponding predicted by applying the proposed equation was close to the observed degree of consolidation on the double drainage condition(at DP-3) but it was less than the observed degree of consolidation on the single drainage condition(at DP-5). The predicted excess pore water pressure according to fill and ponding was very applicable to practice because it was close to the observed data.
In order to analyze effects of strain rate on consolidation characteristics of Busan clay, a series of constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation tests with different strain rate and incremental loading tests (ILT) were performed. From experimental test results on Busan clay, it was found that the preconsolidation pressure was dependent on the corresponding strain rate occurring during consolidation process. Also, consolidation curves normalized with respect to preconsolidation pressure gave a unique stress-strain curve. Coefficient of consolidation and permeability estimated from CRS test had a tendency to converge to a certain value at normally consolidated range regardless of strain rate. An increase in excess pore pressure was observed after the end of loading without change of total stress on the incremental loading test, which phenomenon is called Mandel-Cryer effect. It was also found that rapid generation of excess pore pressure took place due to collapse of soil structure as effective stress approached to preconsolidation pressure.

In this study, an experimental research on the acceleration effect of dredged soil's self weight consolidation with seepage consolidation and PBD was conducted. The middle-sized consolidation equipment had been manufactured in order to investigate the acceleration of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation by PBD and a lower drainage. Seepage pressure was applied to the PBD installed in the center of the test equipment and a drainage by seepage pressure was allowed. The comparison between cases with and without PBD and seepage pressure reveals that the quantity of drained water and the amount of settlement was nearly 1.2 times to 3.68 times greater in the case with PBD and seepage. Early consolidation completion and the use of reclaimed site are expected due to the acceleration of settlement and increase of the quantity of reclamation if PBD is installed while being reclaiming using the result of the research.
An individual vacuum consolidation system has gained a popularity for a ground improvement of soft clayey soil. Finite element anaylses have been performed to simulate the individual vacuum consolidation system using a Plaxis 2D. The modelling procedures of the vacuum consolidation system are presented with the results of an unit-cell analysis. In addition, a case study was carried out to assess the applicability of the Plaxis 2D for simulating the consolidation behavior of soft ground subjected to the individual vacuum pressure.
