Yano method had been used in predicting the settlement of self-weight consolidation of dredged soil in the construction of reclamating the dredged soil. Its estimation was found to show some different results from field measurements. The numerical analysis with PSDDF was peformed find such differences, considering the effect of desiccation on the consolidation during the remaining time after reclamation. For the parametric study, numerical analyses with/without consideration of desiccation were carried out with changing the conditions of desiccation such as the number of placing the fill and the time period between each placement. As results of analysis, estimations about consolidation settlement and distribution of water contents with consideration of desiccation was in good agreements with field measurements. It was also found that the number of placing the fill and the time period between each placement did not affect the behavior of self-weight consolidation as much as the effect of desiccation.

Several researchers have developed a number of theoretical time factors to determine the coefficient of consolidation by biezocone excess pore water dissipation test in soft clay deposits. However, depending on the assumptions and analytical techniques, the estimated coefficient of consolidation could be in a considerably wide range even for a specific degree of consolidation. These solutions are obtained from an initial excess porewater pressure distribution which can be determined from. either the cavity expansion theory or the strain path method. The 야ssipation of the initial excess porelvater pressure has been usally simulated by means of linear-uncoupled consolidation analysis and then the dissipation curve is normalized by the initial excess porewater pressure for easy use. However. since there is no guidelines or rules on which method gives the best solution for obtaining the coefficient of consolidation from the dissipation curve, the final selection was only based on engineer's extrience and Judgements. Thus, such an arbitrary selection might be inappropriate for a specific site to characterize the consolidation behavior. In this paper, we reviewed various theoretical time factors and, based on this consideration, we mentioned needs for researches in selecting a specific solution that is compatible for Korean clays. Also we listed some source of errors that can be encountered in the procedure of dissipation analysis.
The predicted consolidation behavior of in-situ soft clay is quite different from the meas ureal one mainly due to the approximate numerical modelling techniques as well as the uncertainties involved in soil properties and geological configurations. In order to improve the prediction, this paper takes the following pinto consideration : an optimization technique should be adopted for characterizing the in-situ properties from measurements and also an equivalent and efficient model be considered to incorporate the actual 3-D effects. The soil parameters used be the modified Camflay model, which have an effect on the process of consolidation, were back-analyzed by BFGS scheme on the basis of settlements and pore pressures measured in real sites. The optimization technique was implemented in a general consolidation analysis program SPINED. By using the program, one may be able to appropriately analyze the timetependent consolidation behavior of soft deposits.
Creep of soils has a significant impact on mechanical properties. The one-dimensional consolidation creep test, thermal analysis test, scanning electron microscope (SEM) test, and mercury compression test were performed on Guilin red clay to study the changes in bound water and microstructure during the creep process of Guilin red clay. According to the results of the tests, only free and weakly bound water is discharged during the creep of Guilin red clay. When the consolidation pressure p is in the 12.5-400.0 kPa range, it is primarily the discharge of free water; when the consolidation pressure p is in the 800.0-1600.0 kPa range, the weakly bound water is converted to free water and discharged. After consolidation creep, the microstructure of soil changes from granular overhead contact structure to flat sheet-like stacking structure, with a decrease in the number of large and medium pores, an increase in the number of small and micro pores, and a decrease in the fractal dimension of pores. The creep process of red clay is the discharge of weakly bound water as well as the compression of large pores into small pores and the transition of soil particles from loose to dense.
Efforts to understand and develop reasonable analysis methods for the uncertainty of ground have been made since the 20th century, and the concept of safety factor has been used. However, this concept has limitation in measuring the relative reliability of ground structures because the representative values of the actually used factors have uncertainty. Nevertheless, there is no method to completely remove uncertainty. In most cases, the ground investigation results in Korea are not enough for applying such statistical methods. Furthermore, performing a design without accurate investigation of consolidation state even though consolidation characteristics such as settlement and consolidation velocity vary greatly by the consolidation history can lead to many problems. Therefore, in this paper, as part of the effort to reduce the uncertainty of design around over consolidation ratio among the consolidation factors, the consolidation state was assessed on the basis of the results of high-quality laboratory tests that were performed in Gwangyang and Busan in the southern coast of Korea. Furthermore, consolidation characteristics such as over consolidation ratio by depth were proposed for different regions through statistical processes such as the test of normality and the removal of abnormal values to reduce the uncertainty of design parameters.
The renowned Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory is not applicable to quantification of time-rate settlement for highly deformable soft clays such as dredged soil deposits. To deal with this special condition, a non-linear finite strain consolidation theory should be adopted to predict the settlement of dredged soil deposits including self-weight and surcharge-induced consolidation. It is of importance to determine the zero effective stress void ratio ($e_{00}$), which is the void ratio at effective stress equal to zero, and the relationships of void ratio-effective stress and of void ratio-hydraulic conductivity for characterizing non-linear finite strain consolidation behavior for deformable dredged soil deposits. The zero effective stress void ratio means a transitional status from sedimentation to self-weight consolidation of dredged soils. In this paper, laboratory procedures and equipments are introduced to measure such key parameters in the non-linear finite strain consolidation analysis. In addition, the non-linear finite strain consolidation parameters of the Incheon clay and kaolinite are evaluated with the aid of the proposed methods in this paper, which will be used as input parameters for the non-linear finite strain consolidation analyses being performed in the companion paper.

In this study, through dissipation test of DMT predicted Horizontal Coefficient of Consolidation at marine clay. CPTu Dissipation test, laboratory consolidation test compared with $C_v$, through it examined application. The result, DMT calculated horizontal coefficient of consolidation by $P_2$-Log(t) method of DMT-A method and C-$\surd$t(min) method. This horizontal coefficient of consolidation calculated larger than $P_2$-Log(t) method. $P_2$-Log(t) method of DMT, Torstensson of CPTu and Houlsby & Teh(1991) appeared similar to tend. This approximate value is possible application in marine clay. It'll need to study continuously through collection of data.
In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by PVD were carried out, in order to investigate the consolidation promotion effect considering PVD width and surcharge pressure. In the numerical analyses, an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method was applied, in which the applicability of numerical analyses could be confirmed comparing with consolidation behavior simulated at the laboratory. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, consolidation behaviors of soft clay ground with elapsed time was elucidated, together with the effects of PVD width and surcharge pressure.
In this study, consolidation test and numerical analysis were performed with the aim of investigating the characteristics of consolidation behavior of mixed soil with the amount and particle shape of inserted materials. Mixed soil was made up of matrix (dredged clay) and inserted material (crashed oyster shell and/or sand). The concept of stress share ratio was introduced to evaluate the consolidation characteristics of mixed soils. And the finite differential numerical analysis was carried out by applying the Mikasa's consolidation theory. From the results of experiments and numerical analysis, it was verified that mixed soil consolidation behavior is affected by changes in inserted material. When a similar amount of granular material was inserted, the compressibility of the clay matrix of oyster shell mixed soil was smaller than that of sand mixed soil.

In this study, the large scaled model test improved by sand drain was carried out to clarify the internal behavior of the three-dimensional consolidation under different secondary consolidation periods. From the results of model test, the void ratio in the undrained side was lager than in the drained side. In addition, the unconfined compressive strength in the long-term consolidated specimen was larger than that in the short-term consolidated one. It was also found that the unconfined compressive strength was larger in the drained side than in the undrained side. These reasons are considered to be due to the large effective stress by quick pore water pressure dissipation by the short drainage distance in the drained side. Furthermore, in order to investigate the three-dimensional consolidation behavior of clay ground improved by the vertical drain method, the numerical analysis obtained from the three-dimensional elasto-viscous consolidation theory proposed by author (2006) were compared with the test results. It was found that during the three-dimensional consolidation process not only vertical displacement but also radial displacement occurs inside the specimen.
