Harmony through Holistic Engagement: An Emic Model of Greater East Asian Regionalism

  • This study applies grounded theory to develop an emic substantive theory of regional integration in Greater East Asia. The role of norms and policies is explored through discursive content analysis of a wide theoretical sample of official elite policy statements dealing with regionalism and related policy areas. A resulting model of regional integration titled "Harmony through Holistic Engagement" is then discussed in relation to the etic consensus on the phenomenon. The study concludes that the etic consensus on the nature of regional integration in Greater East Asia greatly differs from the results of an emic approach and thus reflects a normative consensus rather than a descriptive reality.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the interaction patterns and the commonly accepted norms of reaching a consensus among small-group children when solving open-ended problems. In conclusion, open-ended problems have various strategies or different acceptable answers, so they give children learning opportunities to compare the answers and to participate in communication. And more valuable interaction patterns come from 'measuring','classifying' problems and open-ended problems with implicit solution. Therefore, teachers might as well consider the relation between problems and interaction patterns when they pose open-ended problems in a small-group study setting. They are expected to empower children to have sociomathematical norms of reaching a consensus un der indirect and supportive guidance.

The Consensus on Impression Formation

  • The studies on impression formation usually have focused on the effect of certain appearance features which elevates perceptual evaluation. This study tried to find out whether there is a consensus on impression formation between the perceived person and the perceiver and if the gender is any significant variable to cast any difference on the impression evaluation. Seven photos of voluntary students in ppt file were projected to 143 students attending a university psychology class and were subjected to a impression evaluation questionnaire consisting of 28 adjective scales. The analysis of result revealed: 1) There was a significant difference between the impression evaluation scores of the perceivers and the perceived; the self evaluation of the perceived person was higher than the perceivers' evaluation. 2) There was also a significant evaluation score difference between the genders of the perceivers; the female perceivers rated the stimuli higher than the male perceivers. There was no interaction effect between the genders of the perceivers and the perceived.

Sequence Selectivity of DNA Alkylation by Adozelesin and Carzelesin

  • Adozelesin and carzelesin are synthetic analogues of the extremely potent antitumor antibiotic CC-1065, which alkylates N3 of adenine in a consensus sequence $5^1$-(A/T)(A/T)$A^*$ ($A^*$ is the site of alkylation). We have investigated the DNA sequence selectivity of adozelesin and carzelesin by thermally ind ced DNA strand cleavage assay using radiolabeled restriction DNA fragments. An analysis of alkylation patterns shows that the consensus sequences for carzelesin and adozelesin have been found to be $5^1$-(A/T)(A/T)$A^*$ and $5^1$-(A/F)(G/C)(A/T)$A^*$. A new consensus sequence, $5^1$-(A/T)(A/T)$CA^*$, has been observed to display an additional alkylation site for adozelesin but not for carzelesin. These results indicate that the pattern of sequence selectivity induced by carzelesin is similar but not identical to those induced by adozelosin.

  • Accurate detection, tracking and analysis of human movement using robots and other visual surveillance systems is still a challenge. Efforts are on to make the system robust against constraints such as variation in shape, size, pose and occlusion. Traditional methods of detection used the sliding window approach which involved scanning of various sizes of windows across an image. This paper concentrates on employing a state-of-the-art, hierarchical graph based method for segmentation. It has two stages: part level segmentation for color-consistent segments and object level segmentation for category-consistent regions. The tracking phase is achieved by employing SIFT keypoint descriptor based technique in a combined matching and tracking scheme with validation phase. Localization of human region in each frame is performed by keypoints by casting votes for the center of the human detected region. As it is difficult to avoid incorrect keypoints, a consensus-based framework is used to detect voting behavior. The designed methodology is tested on the video sequences having 3 to 4 persons.

  • The advancement of information technologies including the Internet has affected the way of social information processing as well as brought about the paradigm shift to the information society. Accordingly, it is very important to study the process of social information processing over the digital media through which social information is generated, distributed, and led to social consensus. In this study, we analyze the mechanism of social information processing, identify a process model of social consensus and institutionalization of the results, and finally propose a set of information processing characteristics on the internet media. We deploy the ethnographic approach to analyze the meaning of group behavior in the context of society to analyze two major events which happened in Korean society. The formation process of social consensus is found to consist of 5 steps: suggestion of social issues, selective reflection on public opinion, acceptance of the issues and diffusion, social consensus, and institutionalization and feedback. The key characteristics of information processing in the Internet is grouped into proactive response to an event, the changes in the role of opinion leader, the flexibility of proposal and analysis, greater scalability, relevance to consensus making, institutionalization and interaction. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a process model of social information processing which can be used as the basis for analyzing the social consensus making process from the social network perspective. In addition, this study suggests a new perspective where the utility of the Internet media can be understood from the social information processing so that other disciplines including politics, communications, and management can improve the decision making performance in utilizing the Internet media.

Blockchain-based lightweight consensus algorithm (L-PBFT) for building trust networks in IoT environment (IoT 환경에서 신뢰 네트워크 구축을 위한 블록체인 기반의 경량 합의 알고리즘(L-PBFT))

  • With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), related network infrastructures require new technologies to protect against threats such as external hacking. This study proposes an L-PBFT consensus algorithm that can protect IoT networks based on a blockchain consensus algorithm. We designed a blockchain (private) model suitable for small networks, tested processing performance for ultra-small/low-power IoT devices, and verified stability. As a result of performance analysis, L-PBFT proved that at least the number of nodes complies with the operation of the consensus algorithm(minimum 14%, maximum 29%) and establishes a trust network(separation of secure channels) different from existing security protocols. This study is a 4th industry convergence research and will be a foundation technology that will help develop IoT device security products in the future.

  • PBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerant) is a consensus algorithm that can achieve consensus by resolving unintentional and intentional faults in a distributed network environment and can guarantee high performance and absolute finality. However, as the size of the network increases, the network load also increases due to message broadcasting that repeatedly occurs during the consensus process. Due to the characteristics of the PBFT algorithm, it is suitable for small/private blockchain, but there is a limit to its application to large/public blockchain. Because PBFT affects the performance of blockchain networks, the industry should test whether PBFT is suitable for products and services, and academia needs a unified evaluation metric and technology for PBFT performance improvement research. In this paper, quantitative evaluation metrics and evaluation frameworks that can evaluate PBFT family consensus algorithms are studied. In addition, the throughput, latency, and fault tolerance of PBFT are evaluated using the proposed PBFT evaluation framework.

  • SI(System Integration) Projects need more efficient project processes. Having efficient contracting laws and regulations is one of the critical success factors for SI industry growth. Former researches developed a framework for efficient contracting laws and regulations for SI industry based on the characteristics of SI business and SI industry. However, the effectiveness of the proposed framework has not been analyzed. This paper tests the validity and effectiveness of the proposed framework. Emprical analysis has been performed to show consensus of each interested parties. Developers and outsourcers have some conflicts in several critical issues of SI project processes. However, comprehensive analysis shows overall consensus among interested parties.

Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal Plants used by Indigenous People in Wolchulsan National Park, Korea (한국 월출산 국립공원 지역민들이 이용하는 약용식물에 대한 민족식물학적 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to document the use of medicinal plants in traditional practices and to analyze and evaluate medicinal traditional knowledge of indigenous people in Wolchulsan National Park. Methods : Data were collected through interviews, informal meetings, open and group discussions, and observations guided by semi-structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed via quantitative analysis of use value (UV), informant consensus factor (ICF) and fidelity level (FL), and network analysis. Results : A total of 580 methods of usage recorded in this study were classified into 55 families, 95 genera, and 104 species. Plants with the highest recorded UVs were Glycine max (L.) Merr., Leonurus japonicus Houtt., and Artemisia princeps Pamp.. The informant consensus factor about using medicinal plants ranged from 0.55 to 0.92, which showed a high level of agreement among the informants on respiratory system disorders and pains. There were 22 species of plants with a fidelity level of 100 %, after eliminating the plants that were mentioned only once from the analysis. Finally, using network analysis, Glycine max (L.) Merr. and Artemisia princeps Pamp. were defined as species with meaningful medicinal use, while lumbago and leg pain were defined as significant ailments in the study area. Conclusions : This study highlights the diversity and importance of medicinal traditional knowledge for communities of Wolchulsan National Park, Korea. The results of this study will provide basic data for phytochemical and pharmaceutical studies, such as new medicines and therapies.
