  • The conjugation processes of a filamentous freshwater green alga Spirogyra varians were examined using FITC-lectins. Conjugation comprised five steps: 1) aligning with adjacent filaments, 2) formation of conjugation protru-sion (papilla), 3) fusion of the protrusions, 4) formation of conjugation tube, and 5) formation of zygotes. Three lectins, ConA, RCA and UEA, showed considerable labeling during the progression of conjuation. FITC-ConA labeled the surfaces of filaments throughout the whole conjugation processes. FITC-RCA labeling was observed at the conjugation protrusions only after the papilla formation. Strong labeling continued until formationg of zygotes at the contacting area where the conjugation tube developed, but no labeling was detected on the surface of vegetative filaments. The labeling decreased gradually over time and disappeared when zygotes were formed. FITC-UEA showed similar labeling pattern with FITC-RCA except that weak labeling remained after zygote formation. Inhibition experiments using RCA, UEA which are complementary to sugars L-fucose and D-galactose, showed considerable decrease of conjugation (<32% vs. 70% in control). These results suggested that the lectin-carbohydrate recognition system might be involved in the conjugation of spirogyra varians.

  • Alzheimer's disease(AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized pathologically by senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and synapse loss. Especially, extracellular beta-amyloid (Abeta) deposition is a major pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In AD senile plaques, high level of iron and car-bonylated Abeta were detected. Iron has a Lewis acid property which can increase the electrophilicity of carbonyls, which may react catalytically with nucleophiles, such as amines. Hence, this study investigated whether or not iron could promote the carbonylation of amine with malondialdehyde (MDA) in the physiological condition. As the basic study, we examined that iron might promote the conjugation reaction between propylamine, monoamine molecule and MDA in the physiological condition. As the concentration of iron increased, the fluorescence intensity produced from the conjugation reaction increased in a dose-dependent manner. Instead of propylamine, we applied the same reaction condition to Abeta 1-40 peptide, one of major components founded in AD senile plaques for the conjugation reaction. As the result, the fluorescence intensity produced from the conjugation reaction between Abeta 1-40 peptide and MDA showed the similar trend to that of the reaction used with propylamine. This study suggests that iron can accelerate the conjugation reaction of MDA to Abeta 1-40 peptide and play an another important role in deterioration of AD brain.

  • A planar active retrodirective four-element array with subharmonic phase conjugation mixers based on anti-parallel diode pairs (APDPs) is proposed. As compared to previous phase conjugation mixers using twice RF frequency for LO frequency, the proposed conjugation mixers need only half RF frequency so that it can be easily applied for millimeter-wave applications. Receiving, transmitting, local oscillator, and intermediate frequencies are 5.79, 5.81, 2.9 GHz, and 10 MHz. Monostatic RCS and Bistatic RCS measurements at source locations of $0^{\circ},\;-20^{\circ},\;and\;28^{\circ}$ show good agreement with the calculated data.

  • Neural precursor cell-expressed developmentally down-regulated 8 (NEDD8), a ubiquitin-like protein, mainly functions through covalent ligation to cullin proteins. Conjugation of NEDD8 with cullins can promote ubiquitination, which plays a critical role in the degradation of many proteins. UBA3 is the subunit of NEDD8-activating enzyme which is one of the keys for NEDD8 linkage to cullin proteins. Previous research showed NEDD8 conjugation to be up-regulated in highly proliferative cell lines. In the present study, up-regulated NEDD8 conjugation was observed in melanoma cell lines by Western blot analysis. After down-regulation with a RNAi to UBA3, proliferation of M14 was suppressed in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, up-regulated NEDD8 conjugation may be involved in the development of melanoma. Interference in this pathway might offera promising method for melanoma therapy.

  • The characteristics of stimulated Brillouin scattering wave for applications to high power laser was experimentally investigated. The peak power reflectivity and the phase conjugation fidelity of Stokes wave with respect to the focal length of lens were measured, and the phase conjugation fidelity for a compressed part of the Stokes wave was also investigated. For the long focal length of lens.(f=100 cm), the peak power of the Stokes wave amounts to about twice as high as that of incident wave. The phase conjugation fidelity for the compressed leading pulse is up to 90%, better than that for other temporal parts of the Stokes pulse. In spatial distribution, the Stokes pulse from the axial region has the largest SBS gain, and it has been ascertained as a best candidate to the application due to excellent pulse compression, peak power reflectivity, and good phase conjugation fidelity.

  • We investigate the Hopf algebra conjugation, ${\chi}$, of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal{A}_2$, in terms of the Hopf algebra conjugation, ${\chi}^{\prime}$, of the mod 2 Leibniz-Hopf algebra. We also investigate the fixed points of $\mathcal{A}_2$ under ${\chi}$ and their relationship to the invariants under ${\chi}^{\prime}$.

  • In this paper, we study the properties of T satisfying [CTC, T] = 0 for some conjugation C where [R, S] := RS - SR. In particular, we show that if T is normal, then [CTC, C] = 0. Moreover, the class of operators T satisfy [CTC, T] = 0 is norm closed. Finally, we prove that if T is complex symmetric, then T is binormal if and only if [C|T|C, |T|] = 0.

  • In this paper, we consider cooperative elliptic systems under conjugation conditions. We first prove the existence of the state for 2 × 2 cooperative elliptic systems with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions, then we find the set of equations and inequalities that characterizes the optimal control of distributed type for these systems. The case of n × n cooperative systems is also established.

  • Pulmonary conjugation pathways may be important for the metabolism of xenobiotics introduced via airways of systemically. The objective of this study was to determine the pulmonary conjugating capacity in both the isolated perfused rabbit lung (IPRL) and in vitro, and the ability of ethanol to alter the above. The IPRL was capable of conjugating glutathione (GSH) with either 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) of 1,2-epoxy-(p-nitrophenoxy) propane(ENP). The pulmonary GSH conjugation with ENP was inhibited by cibacron blue, indicating the presence of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) u and/or classes, but it was not altered by buthionine sulfoximine, a selective inhibitor of Gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase.
