  • The objective of this thesis is to develop a capacity analysis and to develop a methodology to evaluate Level of Service over the entire freeway sections by single MOE (Measure of Effectiveness) This study set forth from a following viewpoint. to analyze entire freeway sections as freeway facility system, it is important to identify the exact point where congestion would occur and the extent of the congestion. Therefore, in this thesis, congestion mechanism on freeways was figured out and congestion analysis methodology was developed. Thereby maximum possible throughput rate and maximum throughput rate in bottleneck sections were calculated and a congestion analysis was carried out. The difference between the new method and existing Procedures is that maximum possible throughput rate and maximum throughput rate. that can be considered as capacities of un-congested and congested flow in the bottleneck section, are variable capacities dependent on demand flow.

  • The Seoul Metropolitan Subway, which started operating in 1974, plays a major role in transporting 7,289 thousands passengers daily. This trend of a steadily increase in passengers from 2012 has increased the congestion rate because of the limited capacity and time. To solve this problem, Seoul city is consistently working on improving the subway facilities, such as the construction of a detour path. This project, however, has only a slight effect on improving the congestion rate and is too expensive to construct the facilities. Hence, this study suggests The Congestion Standardization System based on the IoT for improving the subway congestion rate. Based on the system, the expected effect analysis was performed, which resulted in a decrease in ride passengers from 34 to 20. In addition, this expected effect analysis shows that the number of subway vehicles can increase from 20 to 24. The suggested system will have a significant effect on the efficiency of the management system.

  • Because best-effort Internet provides no guarantees on packet delay and loss, transient network congestion may cause negative effects on H.264/SVC streaming. Thus, the congestion control is required to adjust bit rate by dropping enhancement layers of H.264/SVC streams. This paper differentiates the video streams according to different levels of importance and proposes weighted-based congestion control algorithms to use the rate-distortion characteristics of streams. To maximize the weighted sum of PSNR values of all streams on a bandwidth-constrained node, this paper proposes WNS(Weighted Near-Sighted) and WFS(Weighted Far-Sighted) algorithms to control the number of enhancement layers of streams. Through simulation, this paper shows that weighted-based congestion control algorithm can efficiently adapt streams to network conditions and analyzes the characteristics of congestion control algorithms.

  • Most of network congestions are caused by TCP packet losses in the wired network ecosystems. On the contrary, high BER (Bit Error Rate), which is characteristic of the wireless networks, is a main factor in wireless network environments. Many wireless networks carry out the congestion control mechanisms frequently because they estimate that packet losses are not due to the wireless signal qualities but the congestion controls in their networks. To solve this problem, we propose the improved EWLN (Explicit Wireless Loss Notification) algorithm that more efficiently utilize the congestion window size to increase the wireless network throughput than legacy EWLN algorithm.

  • The traditional TCP was designed assuming wired networks. Thus, if it is used networks consisting of both wired and wireless networks, all packet losses including random losses in wireless links are regarded as network congestion losses. Misclassification of packet losses causes unnecessary reduction of transmission rate, and results in waste of bandwidth. In this paper, we present WTCP(wireless TCP) congestion control algorithm that differentiates the random losses more accurately, and adopts improved congestion control which results in better network throughput. To evaluate the performance of proposed scheme, we compared the proposed algorithm with TCP Westwood and TCP Veno via simulations.

  • The delivery of multimedia that efficiently adapts its bit-rate to changing network characteristics and conditions is one of the important challenging tasks in the design of today's real-time multimedia streaming systems such as IPTV, Mobile IPTV and so on. In these work, the primary focus is on network congestion, to improve network stability and inter-protocol fairness. However, these existing works have problems which do not support QoE (Quality of Experience), because they did not consider essential characteristics of contents playback such as the media continuity. In this paper, we propose a novel rate control scheme for improving the QoE of multimedia streaming service in the Internet congestion, called NCAR (Network and Client-Aware Rate control), which is based on network-aware congestion control and client-aware flow control scheme. Network-aware congestion control of the NCAR offers an improving reliability and fairness of multimedia streaming, and reduces the rate oscillation as well as keeping high link utilization. Client-aware flow control of NCAR offers a removing the media discontinuity and a suitable receiver buffer allocation, and provides a good combination of low playback delay. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.

  • Transmission control protocols have to overcome common problems in wireless networks. TCP employing both packet loss discrimination mechanism and available bandwidth estimation algorithm, known as the good existing solution, shows significant performance enhancement in wireless networks. For instance, TCP New Jersey which exhibits high throughput in wireless networks intends to improve TCP performance by using available bandwidth estimation and congestion warning. Even though it achieves 17% and 85% improvements in terms of goodput over TCP Westwood and TCP Reno, respectively, we further improve it by exploring maximized available bandwidth estimation, handling bit-error-rate error recovery, and effective adjustment of sending rate for retransmission timeout. Hence, we propose TCP NJ+, showing that for up to 5% packet loss rate, it outperforms other TCP variants by 19% to 104% in terms of goodput when the network is in bi-directional background traffic.

  • Ship's delay caused by port congestion has drawn attention to the necessity for analysis on overall operation in port. But, in order to analyze the complicated port operation which contains large number of variable factors, queueing theory is needed to be adopted, which is applicable to a large scale transportation including ship's arrival in a large port. In this paper, a simulation model for Inchon Port was developed by the software SIMAN V and presented congestion rate under a certain scenario regarding the arrival ship's number and service levels. To develop the simulation model, types of ships and cargoes during the 1995 in Inchon Port was analyzed in advance. The results of the simulation can be summarized as follows : In order to maintain present levels of congestion rate and time with the increasing number of arrival vessels, service rate should be increased at an exponential rate. To improve the current congestion effectively, part of cargoes are needed to be transferred to a newly developing port. Results obtained from simulation can be used properly to prepare improved service levels and to plan appropriate investment strategies.

  • In this paper, we proposed an enhanced TCP congestion control algorithm using RTT with congestion window parameter cwnd to minimize the effect of TCP congestion. The proposed scheme could avoid the occurrence of frequent congestion and decrease the delay caused by the recovery time and the using amount of switch buffer. Through the simulation, we showed that the proposed scheme cm acquire higher performance than the existing scheme. There are 22.56% improvement at the average using buffer efficiency, and packet drop rate is 0.1% which is less than existing scheme.

  • In the wireless network the congestion and delay occurs mainly when there are too many packets for the network to process or the sender transmits more packets than the receiver can accept. The congestion and delay is the reason of packet loss which degrades the performance of multimedia streaming. This paper proposes a novel transmission rate monitoring-based optimization mechanism to optimize packet loss and to improve QoS. The proposed scheme is based on the trade-off relationship between transmission rate monitoring and overhead monitoring. For this purpose this paper processes a source rate control-based optimization which optimizes congestion and delay. Performance evaluated RED, TFRC, and the proposed mechanism. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism is more efficient than REC(Random Early Detection) mechanism and TFRC(TCP-friendly Rate Control) mechanism in packet loss rate, throughput rate, and average response rate.
