  • Leaky aquifer (two-aquifer) system in this study consist of an upper unconfined and a lower confined aquifer with a leaky layer between them. It is assumed that water is withdrawn from the confined aquifer of the aquifer system, the upper unconfined aquifer will be affected by the leaky aquifer separating the upper and lower aquifer. In order to analyze the leaky aquifer, the determination of hydraulic parameters is needed. In this paper, hydraulic parameters are suggested by improved SM (slope-matching) method. To know variation of groundwater head in leaky aquifer systems, an numerical scheme is made using the finite difference method. To verify the numerical scheme, its solution is compared to analytical one. The solution of them agrees well in one-dimensional system at steady-state condition. And heads of groundwader are computed upper and lower aquifer in two-dimensional system.

  • The closed system's internal rigid body particle rotation motion can be distinguished by a main body that becomes the core of the rotation and the particles that are subjected to the rotation. The instance of particles becoming bounded to the main body as a holonomic system, has till now, been well defined and formulated in the study of Kinetics, and the structure of the formulas relate well to reality. However, when the structure is non-holonomic it deviates from these existing equations. The purpose of this research is to categorize the differences between a holonomic system and a non-holonomic system when rotating, through devices. With a special emphasis on the real phenomenon of the non-holonomic system which will be formulated in the form of a model or computer simulation. With these formulas, the center of mass shift in a closed rotating motion system and confined motion of external friction will be adequately expressed, so that it may be applied to computer graphics motions methods.

  • The water jet impingement cooling is one of the techniques to remove the heat from high heat flux equipments. Local heat transfer of the confined water impinging jet and the effect of nozzle collar to enhance the heat transfer are investigated in the fee surface jet and submerged jet. Boiling is initiated from the farthest downstream and increase of the wall temperature is reduced with developing boiling, forming the flat temperature distributions. The reduction in the nozzle-to-surface distance fur H/W$\le$1 causes significant increases and distribution changes of heat transfer. Developed boiling reduces the differences of heat transfer for various conditions. The nozzle collar is employed at the nozzle exit. The distances from heated surface to nozzle collar, Hc are 0.25W, 0.5W and 1.0W. The liquid film thickness is reduced and the velocity of wall jet increases as decreased spacing of collar to heated surface. Heat transfer is enhanced fur region from the stagnation to x/W$\~$8 in the free surface jet and to x/W$\~$5 in the submerged jet. For nucleate boiling region of further downstream, the heat transfer by the nozzle collar is decreased in submerged jet comparing with higher velocity condition. It is because the increased velocity by collar is de-accelerated downstream.

  • Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a pleomorphic disease entity characterized by local or disseminated atypical Langerhans cells (LCs) found most commonly in bone, lungs, mucocutaneous structures and endocrine organs. Among different sites, unifocal disease confined to a lymph node (LN) is rare. We report a case of LCH confined to a LN in a 38-year-old male who presented with a 2 cm-sized cervical mass. The fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears of cervical LN showed high cellularity having isolated LCs with contorted nuclei and nuclear grooves mixed in multinucleated giant cells, small lymphocytes and eosinophils. Charcot-Leyden crystals were also seen, as were a few dendritic-like cells and intranuclear inclusions. Confirmation of LCH was made by histopathologic studies, positive reactions for S-100 protein and CD1a immunohistochemical staining and by the demonstration of Birbeck granules on electron microscopy. The differentials to be considered include dermatopathic lymphadenitis, sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, Hodgkin's lymphoma and malignant histiocytosis. The characteristic cytomorphologic pattern of LCH in a LN FNA smear plays an important role in suggesting the diagnosis of LCH.

  • This paper compares the performance of axially loaded concrete filled steel tube (CFST) columns cast using a conventionally vibrated normal concrete (NC) and a novel self-consolidating concrete (SCC) made with a new viscosity modifying admixture (VMA). A total of sixteen columns with a standard compressive strength of about 50 MPa for both SCC and NC were tested by applying concentric axial load through the concrete core. Columns were fabricated without and with longitudinal and hoop reinforcement (Series I and Series II, respectively) in addition to the tube confinement. The slenderness of the columns expressed as height to diameter ratio (H/D) ranged between 4.8 and 9.5 for Series CI and between 3.1 and 6.5 for Series CII. The strength and ductility of SCC columns were found comparable to those of their NC counterparts as the maximum strength enhancement in NC columns ranged between 1.1% and 7.5% only. No significant difference in strain development was found due to the presence of SCC or NC or due to the presence of longitudinal and hoop reinforcement. Biaxial stress development in the steel tube as per von Mises yield criterion showed similar characteristics for both SCC and NC columns. The confined strength ($f^{\prime}_{cc}$) of SCC was found to be lower than that of NC and $f^{\prime}_{cc}$ also decreased with the increase of slenderness of the columns. Analytical models for the prediction of confined concrete strength and axial strength of CFST columns were developed and their performance was validated through test results. The proposed models were found to predict the axial strength of CFST columns better than existing models and Code based design procedures.

  • This study estimates the performance of steel spirals according to the compressive strength of the concrete. A total of 24 confined concrete cylinders ($150{\times}300mm$) were cast and tested under monotonic concentric compression. The main test parameters were the yield strength of spiral reinforcements and the compressive strength of the concrete. To effectively evaluate the confinement effect according to the yield strength of steel spirals, the external diameter of steel spirals was designed to be same as the diameter of specimen. The experimental results indicated that the performance of confinement of steel spirals increased as the yield strength of spiral reinforcement increased and the compressive strength of the concrete decreased. Furthermore, existing analytical models were used for predicting the stress versus axial strain relationships of specimens tested in this study. It can be concluded that the accuracy of the analytical models deteriorated as the yield strength of steel spirals and the compressive strength of the concrete increased.

  • The confined concrete subjected multi-axil stresses have been known as the strength of concrete increases significantly. Many researchers have studied in confining effect of concrete, and now are studying in many fields. Lap splices were located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge piers that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Highway Design Specification on 1992. But sudden brittle failure of lap splices may occur under loading. This study introduces a new method to retrofit RC bridge columns with lap splice which do not have enough ductility during an earthquake. The new method use mechanical external pressure and steel plates around RC columns. The jacketing built following the new method shows good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of concrete cylinders. The thicker steel jacket shows larger compressive strength, however, the ductility at failure depends on the welding quality of steel jackets. In this study, The effect of the new method is verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests and analysis results.

  • In this paper, the usage of tilt-implanted trench Schottky diode(TITSD) based on silicon carbide is proposed. A tilt-implanted trench termination technique modified for SiC is proposed as a method to keep all the potentials confined in the trench insulator when reverse blocking mode is operated. With the side wall doping concentration of $1{\times}10^{19}cm^{-3}$ nitrogen, the termination area of the TITSD is reduced without any sacrifice in breakdown voltage while potential is confined within insulator. When the trench depth is set to 11um and the width is optimized, a breakdown voltage of 2750V is obtained and termination area is 38.7% smaller than that of other devices which use guard rings for the same breakdown voltage. A Sentaurus device simulator is used to analyze the characteristics of the TITSD. The performance of the TITSD is compared to the conventional trench Schottky diode.

  • Confined Pt and $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles (NPs) in a mesoporous core/shell silica microsphere, Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$, were prepared using a bi-functional linker molecule. A large number of Pt NPs in Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$, ranging from 5 to 8 nm, are embedded into the shell and some of them are in close contact with $CoFe_2O_4$ NPs. The hydrogenation of cyclohexene over the Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$ microsphere at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm of $H_2$ yields cyclohexane as a major product. In addition, it gives oxygenated products. Control experiments with $^{18}O$-labelled water and acetone suggest that surface-bound oxygen atoms in $CoFe_2O_4$ are associated with the formation of the oxygenated products. This oxidation reaction is operative only if $CoFe_2O_4$ and Pt NPs are in close contact. The Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$ catalyst is separated simply by a magnet, which can be re-used without affecting the catalytic efficiency.

  • Recently, a great progress has been made in bridge construction technology through the development of high performance materials and new structural types. However, most of attention has been paid to the cast-in-place technologies and material cost saving. The cast-in-place method is always subject to some environmental damages in construction sites, which frequently causes conflicts with residents. To overcome the disadvantages, a lot of fabrication construction method was developed. Most fabrication construction methods developed up to now have been applied for superstructure of bridges. In contrast, such fabricable methods developed for substructures are extremely rare. A fabricated column using ICH CFT(Internally Confined Hollow CFT) column was developed in a series of previous researches. Included in the previous studies are design and construction methods for the precast segmental coping, the column-coping connection, the column-segment connection, column-foundation connection. In this paper, seismic performance of the fabricated ICH CFT columns was extensively investigated experimentally. Two test specimens were prepared depending on the connection methods of segments; one by mortar-grouting method and the other by reinforcement method using stiffeners.
