Flexural ductility of RC beam sections at high strain rates

  • Computation of flexural ductility of reinforced concrete beam sections has been proposed by taking into account strain rate sensitive constitutive behavior of concrete and steel, confinement of core concrete and degradation of cover concrete during load reversal under earthquake loading. The estimate of flexural ductility of reinforced concrete rectangular sections has been made for a wide range of tension and compression steel ratios for confined and unconfined concrete at a strain rate varying from $3.3{\times}10^{-5}$ to 1.0/sec encountered during normal and earthquake loading. The parametric studies indicated that flexural ductility factor decreases at increasing strain rates. Percentage decrease is more for a richer mix concrete with the similar reinforcement. The confinement effect has marked influence on flexural ductility and increase in ductility is more than twice for confined concrete (0.6 percent volumetric ratio of transverse steel) compared to unconfined concrete. The provisions in various codes for achieving ductility in moment resisting frames have been discussed.

  • Hydromagnetic flow in a confined enclosure under a uniform magnetic field is studied numerically. The thermally active side walls of the enclosure are kept at hot and cold temperatures specified, while the top and bottom walls are insulated. The coupled momentum and energy equations associating with the electromagnetic retarding force as well as the buoyancy force terms are solved by an iterative procedure using the SIMPLER algorithm based on control volume approach. The changes in the flow and thermal field based on the orientation of an external magnetic field, which varies from 0 to $2{\pi}$ radians, are investigated. Resulting heat transfer characteristics are examined too.

  • A theoretical study is made of the flow in a confined cylindrical container with differential rotating top and bottom disks. Two kinds of theoretical solution for the azimuthal velocity were obtained: one is an exact solution of Bessel function type and the other is an approximate solution of exponential function type which comes from WKB approximation. Both theoretical solutions are shown to be self consistent with each other as well as a good agreement with previous studies. Moreover, in a range of relatively low Reynolds number, the obtained solution of Bessel function type shows better result than previous solutions.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to explore the behaviors of the radiative ignition of polymethylmetacrylate(PMMA) in a confined enclosure such as the ignition delay time, PMMA surface temperature, the ignition location and the ignition process. In addition, the effects of hot wall orientation on the ignition delay and PMMA surface temperature were studied. When the hot wall is located at the bottom, ignition delay time is the shortest. Ignition surface temperature becomes the lowest for the hot top wall case. These are due to buoyancy effect. Since the radiative heat flux of hot wall is rather lower than laser source, the ignition is considered to be controlled by the mixing process. Therefore, the ignition location, where appropriate mixture of fuel and oxygen exists, occurs near the hot wall. The flame propagates along the hot wall where there exists sufficient oxygen.

  • As volume of international trade is growing importance for service business and service trade are also increasing. Increasing importance of service trade in Korea is also a reflection of such international trading. In this treatise this writer did not address various topics in relation to international trade arising from service trade. But confined the topic to study of concept of service and concept and patterns of service trade. Depending on scholars concept of service may be varied and this holds true also with concept of service trade which also lends itself to various classification. Among them if the focus is concentrated to tax standard in international trade then it can be classified into service transaction. In other words classification can be made according to service trade separated from commodities transaction with embodiment of service and service trade accompanying commodities transaction. In this treatise this writer confined the topic to introduction of international service trade but issues arising in relation to such trade internationally are varied. For this reason more study on such topics will be required in future.

  • In this study, uniaxial compression tests were performed to investigates the stress-strain relations of Double Skinned Composite Tubular Columns reinforced with steel tube. The confined concrete has been known as the strength of concrete increases significantly. Specimens reinforced with outer and inner steel tube were tested by uniaxial compression test. To investigate the influence of concrete strength increase by confining conditions in steel tubes, 8 specimens with different thickness of tube, hollowness ratio and concrete strength were tested and compared with other researcher's concrete material model.

  • In this study, the confined laminar flow around a square cylinder, which ejects a either on the front face or on the rear face, is numerically simulated. In each case, three ratios of jet velocity to the fixed upstream velocity are considered. In all cases of the rear fuel jet, the high mass-fraction region is formed along the streamlines from the jet exit. In case of front jet, drag is significantly decreased when the jet velocity ratio is greater than 1. The results obtained exhibit flow and scalar-mixing characteristics encountered in a planar combustor

  • In this article, we present a brief explanation of simulation for magnetic confined fusion plasma. Devices for nuclear fusion experiment become large, complex, and expensive these days, so the simulation can be a valuable tool for understanding and expecting the fusion plasma physics. Research areas presented here are plasma equilibrium and instability, turbulence study, heating and current driving, boundary and divertor area plasma physics, and integrated operation scenario study. Traditionally, many foreign codes have been used because those are verified and stable, however our own MHD and gyrokinetic codes with better performance are under developing recently. While researchers have devoted their effort to make and use a simulation code in individual areas, many ones also endeavor to integrate the simulation codes in different areas for thorough understanding of fusion plasma physics.

Sound Propagation in 5CB Liquid Crystals Homogeneously Confined in a Planar Cell

  • The Brillouin spectrum of 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (5CB) liquid crystals homogeneously confined in a planar liquid crystal (LC) cell was measured using a 6-pass tandem Fabry-Perot interferometer. By adopting a special right-angle scattering geometry, the sound velocity of 5CB was estimated from the Brillouin shift without knowing the refractive index. The sound velocity of the longitudinal wave propagating along the direction of the directors aligned parallel to the glass plates of the LC cell was 1784${\pm}$7 m/s at 300 K. The attenuation coefficient $\alpha$ was estimated to be approximately $1.9{\times}10^6m^{-1}$, which is about twice as large as that of the longitudinal sound wave propagating along the direction perpendicular to the directors. The present method may be very useful in the evaluation of the elastic properties of the materials used in display devices, whose refractive indices are not known.

Concentration distributions during flow of confined flowing polymer solutions at finite concentration: slit and grooved channel

  • Simulations of solutions of flexible polymer molecules during flow in simple or complex confined geometries are performed. Concentrations from ultradilute up to near the overlap concentration are considered. As concentration increases, the hydrodynamic migration effects observed in dilute solution unidirectional flows (Couette flow, Poiseuille flow) become less prominent, virtually vanishing as the overlap concentration is approached. In a grooved channel geometry, the groove is almost completely depleted of polymer chains at high Weissenberg number in the dilute limit, but at finite concentration this depletion effect is dramatically reduced. Only upon inclusion of hydrodynamic interactions can these phenomena be properly captured.
