Numerical studies are performed to predict the stress-strain behavior of rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops under axial and eccentric compressions. Using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS, the Drucker-Prager criterion and the yield surface are adopted for damaged plasticity concrete. The proposed finite element models are compared with the published experimental data. Parametric studies on concrete grades, confinement arrangement, diameter and spacing of hoops and eccentricity of load are followed. Numerical results have shown good agreements with experimental values, and indicated a proper constitutive law and model for concrete. Cross-sectional areas and spacing of the hoops have significant effect on the bearing capacity. It can be concluded that rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops show better performance than the conventional ones.
Early investigations focused mainly on manipulating the confinement effect to develop a reinforced concrete column with lateral hoops. Based on this legacy model, Li's model incorporated the additional confinement effect of a steel jacket. However, recent experiments on plain concrete cylinders with steel jackets revealed relatively large discrepancies in the estimates of strength enhancement and the post-peak behavior. Here, we describe a modified constitutive law for confined concrete with an unbonded external steel jacket in terms of three regions for the loading stage. We used a two-phase heterogeneous concrete model to simulate the uniaxial compression test of a $150mm{\times}300mm$ concrete cylinder with three thicknesses of steel jackets: 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2.0 mm. The proposed constitutive model was verified by a series of finite element analyses using a finite element program. The damaged plasticity model and extended Drucker-Prager model were applied and compared in terms of the level of pressure sensitivity for confinement in 3D. The proposed model yielded results that were in close agreement with the experimental results.
Enhancement of strength and ductility is the main reason for the extensive use of FRP jackets to provide external confinement to reinforced concrete columns especially in seismic areas. Therefore, numerous researches have been carried out in order to provide a better description of the behavior of FRP-confined concrete for practical design purposes. This study presents a new approach to obtain strength enhancement of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) confined concrete cylinders by applying artificial neural networks (ANNs). The proposed ANN model is based on experimental results collected from literature. It represents the ultimate strength of concrete cylinders after CFRP confinement which is also given in explicit form in terms of geometrical and mechanical parameters. The accuracy of the proposed ANN model is quite satisfactory when compared to experimental results. Moreover, the results of the proposed ANN model are compared with five important theoretical models proposed by researchers so far and considered to be in good agreement.
The current study explores the soil-structure interaction (SSI) effect on the potential seismic damage of mid-rise non-seismically designed reinforced concrete frames retrofitted by Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP). An 8-storey reinforced concrete frame poorly-confined due to transverse reinforcement deficiency is selected and then retrofitted by FRP wraps to provide external confinement. The poorly-confined and FRP retrofitted frames with/without SSI are modelled using hysteretic nonlinear elements. Inelastic time history and damage analyses are performed for these frames subjected to different seismic intensities. The results show that the FRP confinement significantly reduces one or two damage levels for the poorly-confined frame. More importantly, the SSI effect is found to increase the potential seismic damage of the retrofitted frame, reducing the effectiveness of FRP retrofitting. This finding, which is contrary to the conventionally beneficial concept of SSI governing for decades in structural and earthquake engineering, is worth taking into account in designing and evaluating retrofitted structures.

The confined concrete subjected multi-axial stresses have been known as the strength of concrete increases significantly. Many researchers have studied in confining effects of concrete, and now are studying in many fields. However, there are few passive confinements by steel tube. Although Mander et al. studied the concrete confined by transverse reinforcements, the confinement by steel tube differs from confining of reinforcements. To investigate the influence of concrete strength increased by confining conditions in steel, 51 specimens confined by different shapes and thicknesses of steel tube were tested and compared.

In this paper, the flow characteristics of an axial fan spraying isothermal compact jet in a confined space were investigated by the experimental methods, the numerical method, and the free jet theory According to the results, the numerical result and the experimental result are agreed well qualitatively and different quantitatively within $\pm1.0%$ for the centerline velocity, the entrainment ratio, and the maximum throw. However, the free jet theory can reasonably predict the centerline velocity except the entrainment ratio and the maximum throw. In other words, the entrainment ratio and the maximum throw by 1.he free jet theory are hard to estimate the characteristics of jet because of restriction of c confined space.

The self-assembly of supramolecular dendrimers allows the rapid construction of nanosized structures with regularly ordered features that depend on the shape of the molecules and the relative strength of the intra-and intermolecular interactions. Here we report on a dramatic improvement in the degree of control and selectivity in the orientation of fan-shaped supramolecular molecules over a large area, which has been achieved by confined geometries and applied fields. The order and orientation of supramolecular dendrimers can be controlled by surface anchoring in confined geometries. POM, SEM, TEM, AFM and XRD results show that the molecules form the complicated defect-ordering in the microchannels with different feature sizes. We show that these defect domains are strongly influenced by the boundary and feature size of the surfaces. This technique can be used to create a grain size in the plane of the film that is much larger than that which can be achieved using previously reported soft-material based pattering.

Conducting polymers (e.g. poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylen vinylene] (MEH-PPV)) confined in one-dimensional nanoscale channels of mesoporous materials, are expected to lead the novel applications for electroconductive and optoelectronic devices. We investigated the adsorption behavior of MEH-PPV on organically surface-modified mesoporous silica (FSM-16) and mesoporous organosilica. The amount of the confined MEH-PPV was found to strongly depend on the surface modifications of the mesoporous materials. The optical absorption edge of the confined MHE-PPV was clearly blue-shifted when compared to that of a free MHE-PPV.
The continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS) based on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was modeled by means of a rigid-plastic two-dimensional finite element method (FEM). Parallel to the simulations, samples of AA 1050 sheets were experimentally deformed by CCSS. The CCSS deformation led to the formation of through thickness texture gradients comprising a strong shear texture in the sheet center and weak shear textures in the sheet surfaces. FEM analysis revealed variations in the strain component $\varepsilon_13$ along the sample thickness direction, which gave rise to the evolution of different textures. A high friction between the sample and die surface was responsible for lowering intensities of the shear texture components in thickness layers close to the surfaces.

Recently new rehabilitation techniques have been proposed with advanced composite materials like carbon fiber, aramid, glass fiber sheet and so forth. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete columns confined with carbon fiber sheet and evaluate the degree of their strengthening effect. For the test, the specimen size of column is 15cm$\times$15cm$\times$90cm reinforced with 4 number of main bars of 10 mm diameter, tied bars of 6 mm diameter and slenderness ratio 20. Columns were wrapped with carbon fiber sheet along the column length. It is necessary to make some assumption regarding the confinement of carbon fiber sheet to apply to reinforced concrete columns under concentric loads. The strength gain effect of columns confined with carbon fiber sheet could be predicted using the proposed equation.
