  • In this study, the following factors are investigated from experiments for a vertical parallel plate heat exchanger under the frosting condition ; the growth of frost layer, the characteristics of heat and mass transfer, the change of mass flow rate of the air passing through the heat exchanger, and the pressure drop of the air in the heat exchanger. The amount of heat and mass flux of water vapor transferred from the air stream to the heat exchanger surface is large at the early stage of frosting and then decreases dramatically, and the extent of decreasing rate becomes moderate with time. The frost layer formed near the inlet of the heat exchanger is thicker and denser than that formed near the outlet. It is found that the gradient of the amount of frost along the flow direction increases with time. In the early period of frost formation, the thermal resistance between the air and the cooling plate increases dramatically and then the extent of change decreases with time. Initially the convective thermal resistance is dominant. Then, while the convective thermal resistance decreases with time, the conductive thermal resistance continues to increase with time and finally the conductive thermal resistance becomes dominant.

  • The objective of present research work is to design the heat conductive mould to improve cooling characteristics of the injection mould for a mouse. In order to obtain the high cooling rate of the mould, a heat conductive mould with three different materials was designed. The materials of the base structure, the mid-layer and the molding part of the heat conductive mould were chosen as Cu-Ni alloy (Ampcoloy 940) to improve the heat conductivity of the mould, Ni-Cu alloy (Monel 400) to reduce a thermal stress, injection tool steel (P21), respectively. Through the three-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis and the thermal stress analysis, the effects of the geometrical arrangement of each material on the cooling characteristics and the thermal stress distribution were examined. From the results of the analyses, a proper design of the thermal conductive mould was obtained.

  • Typical boiler system consists of combustion chamber and heat exchanger in one housing, therefore the size of boiler system is large and the heat exchanging efficiency becomes low. At these boiler systems, because the combustible mixture fires as free flame in the combustion chamber, consequently the combusted hot gas heats the heat exchanger only as conductive and convective heat transfer. The present Porous Ceramic Burner concept is that combustion process is occurred at the gaps of the porous ceramic materials, and the heat exchanger is placed in the same porous materials. Therefore we can reduce the boiler size, and we can also use radiative heat transfer from ceramic material with conductive and convective heat transfer from combusted gas throwing the porous materials. The purpose of this study is to search the flame stability ranges at different fuel flow rate and excess air ratio burning in the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic balls. We found out the stable excess air ratio range on given combustion intensity. And we can get clean porous ceramic combustion results compared with free flame.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the frosting behavior on the plate of thermally conductive plastic (PBT based resin) by comparing it with those of aluminum and some plastic test specimens (PTFE based resin). It is found that the frosting behavior of plastic specimens with 1 mm thickness shows similar trend to that of aluminum except PTFE. The properties of frost formed on the specimens are found to be affected by both thermal conductivity and surface characteristics of the materials. The results indicate that the heat and mass transfer rates of PBT resin are almost equivalent to those of aluminum.

  • Thermal conductivity of ceramic fibrous insulator was analysed and predicted by using the modeling/simulation technique. Ceramic fibrous insulators are widely used as high temperature insulator on account of their lightweight mass and heat resisting properties. Especially it is suitable to protect the high speed aircraft and missiles from severe aero-thermodynamic heating. Thermal conductivity of ceramic fibrous insulator could be determined from the conductive heat transfer and the radiative heat transfer through the insulator. In order to estimate conductive thermal conductivity, homogenization technique was applied, while radiative thermal conductivity was computed by means of random number and radiation probability. Particularly radiation probability can make it possible to estimate the conductivity of fibrous insulator without any experimental constant. The calculated conductivity predicted in the present study have a reasonable accuracy with an average error of 7 percent to experimental data.

  • The effects of a directionally emitting and reflecting dielectric surface on the wall heat flux and medium temperature distribution are studied. The system is an infinite square duct enclosing an absorbing and emitting medium. The emissivity and reflectivity of opaque and gray wall vary with direction. Combined effect of conductive and radiative heat transfer is analyzed using finite difference and the direct discrete-ordinates method. The parameters under study are conduction to radiation parameter, optical depth, refractive index ratio. The results with directional and diffuse properties deviate each other when the conduction to radiation parameter is less than around 0.01. The wall heat flux differs fur optical thickness less than around 0.1. However, the medium temperature profiles differ for optical thickness greater than around 1. Deviations from diffuse property calculations are larger for hot wall with directional property than cold wall with directional property. As n increases from 1.5, the trend changes are observed fur refractive index ratio about n=6.10

  • A modeling technique for the 2-way coupling of heat transfer and conduction currents has been performed to inspire a combined analytical simulation. The 3-D finite element method is used to solve steady conduction currents and heat generation in an aluminum film deposited on a silicon substrate. The model investigates the temperature in the device after the current is applied. The conservation equation of energy, the Maxwell equations for conduction currents, the unsteady state heat transfer equation and the Fourier's law for heat transfer are implemented as a bidirectionally coupled problem. It is found that the strongly coupled temperature and time dependent heat equations give a reasonable results and an explicit solving technique.

  • The natural convection heat transfer in a vertical plate with discrete heat sources was studied experimentally. The particular interest was the thermal interaction of the heat sources. In this study, the radiative and conductive heat transfer were considered as heat loss, Thus, the net convective heat transfer rate was presented as adiabatic temperature and thermal wake function. As a results, for non-uniform heating condition, heat input ratio(q1/q2) was most dominant parameter for the thermal wake function. The convective heat transfer rate is decreased with the increasing of channel ratio. For the range of $7.50{\times}10^5<Rac<8.66{\times}10^6$, a useful correlation was proposed as a function of channel Rayleigh number.

  • The effects of a specularly reflecting surface on the wall heat flux and medium temperature distribution are studied. The system is an infinite square duct enclosing an absorbing and emitting medium. The walls are opaque, and black or gray. The walls emit diffusely but reflect diffusely or speculary. Heat is transferred by the combined effect of conduction and radiation. The radiative heat transfer is analyzed using direct discrete-ordinates method. The parameters under study are conduction, to radiation parameter, optical depth, wall emissivity, and reflection characteristics. The specular reflection and diffuse reflection show sizeable differences when the conduction to radiation parameter is less than around 0.01. The differences appear only either on the side wall heat flux or on the medium temperature profiles for the range of this study. The differences on the side wall heat flux are observed for optical thickness less than around 0.1 However the differences on the medium temperate profiles are found for optical thickness greater than around 1. The difference increase with increasing reflectance. The specular reflection increases the well heat flux gradient along the side wall.

  • In order to select a new material for a heat exchanger, the frosting behavior of a thermally conductive plastic based on PBT was compared to the frosting behavior of aluminum and three types of plastics based on PTFE. The frosting behavior on the 1 mm thick PBT specimen was similar to that of the aluminum specimen but not that of the pure PTFE specimen. The properties of the frost formed on the specimens were affected by both the thermal conductivity and surface characteristics of the materials. The heat and mass transfer rates of the thermally conductive plastic were almost equivalent to those of the aluminum specimen.
